Make the image a mask. Then create a Levels layer on top that lightens the image and uses the mask to restrict it to certain areas of the image.

I have no clue what you are talking about though... I had the face as a layer with no background, then messed with it a bit but ho actual depth, not really anyway. I don't follow the terminology you used...
