I emailed Gene Kern at Fuji to find out when their cards are coming out, along with what the pricing will be. The response:

The 16GB and 32GB cards are available through your professional video
distributor. Your distributor can provide pricing.

Thanks,

Gene Kern

Are we to understand that the Fujis will be the same price as the Panasonics?

This just in.

They ARE available. However, they just became available in late June so
they won't be reflected in any dealer catalogs or on web sites yet.

Most dealers handle these as a "special order" item because of the high
cost. The MSRP for the 16GB is $900 and it's $1650 for the 32GB. If you
have an ongoing relationship with a dealer, I'm sure they will order
them for you.

Attached is a PDF of the product sell-sheet.

Regards,

Gene

So it seems like the MSRP for the Fuji and the Panasonic are the same- can I assume that means these won't be any cheaper than Panasonic brand cards?

When I was first considering buying my HVX, one of the big reasons I liked the idea of an IT workflow was that record capacities would be tied to moore's law, and I assumed (wrongly so far) that 3rd party p2 cards would drive prices down. This is at least encouraging that another company has chosen to start selling P2 cards. And yes, the capacity has been rising, though not quite at the speed of moore's law.

I'll continue to twiddle my thumbs and hope.

if there is not a shortage of panasonic p2 cards on the market right now
what is the point of selling the same card for the same price, if they are the same price I would just go with the panasonic p2 cards, this really makes no sense
but ohh well

$1650 for a 32GB card??

B&H has Panasonic 32GB Cards for $1550 right now.

The Panasonic 16GB cards are also $50 cheaper.
What would the incentive be to go with the Fuji made cards?

Even if the street price comes in below I doubt it would drop enough to make any significant difference.
Seems they've somewhat missed the boat on this one.

Then again I doubt Panasonic would license the tech to them just to allow Fuji to undercut them in the marketplace, so I guess we shouldn't be too surprised.

That's MSRP.

Yes, but $1650 MSRP. Both Fuji and Panasonic are offering at identical MSRP's.

$900 MSRP, $849 street.

One can only assume that they will street at or below the Panasonic prices.

Depends on how they sell, I'm sure. If there are shortages like last year, they'll sell at the same price. If they can't sell, then we'll probably see that reflected in lower prices.

the capacity has been rising, though not quite at the speed of moore's law.

Moore's law should have P2 card capacities doubling roughly every two years.

When introduced in 2004 a 4GB P2 card was priced at roughly $1700
Four years later you can get a 16GB P2 card for $1550

Seems to be following that trend pretty well to me.

64GB will be out this year, but we don't know the price yet.

Any bets on this? I'm figuring $2250-2500.

Luis... I think you meant a 32gb card for 1550 :)

who knows, but if memory serves, it seems like we see a price shift with every other p2 card size increase.

16's didn't change when the 32's came out... so we might see one or both of those decrease with 64's, or we might see 16's go away (but I hope not).

Oops.
Yeah, you're right.

Funny enough, even with my mistake the numbers seemed to reflect Moore's law - so in actuality P2 card capacities/prices are increasing/dropping faster than should have been anticipated.

Yeah. I agree. We just had a long lull between 8's and 16's, but the pace has picked up considerably since then.

Speaking of pricing, any idea why it takes so long to get a price on the HPX170?

When BH set it at $5995, I read a bunch of posts indicating that that price was the MAP price.

But is it? Because i've not seen anything announced for Panasonic.

I assume we'll hear an official price at the same time we hear an official release date.
Word on the street thus far is that we shouldn't hold our breath for September... but we'll see.*

*Keep in mind you should never take any statement seriously that includes both the terms "assume" and "word on the street"

You know... the street.
;)

Seriously, just talking to dealers.
But again, no one knows anything right now other than the people at Panasonic.
Anything other than an official announcement from Panasonic reps should always be taken with a huge grain of salt.

When the HVX first came out, B&H kept their price at $6,000, which I believe was MSRP, for weeks while the going price charged by almost everyone else was $5,500. I was looking to buy at the time, and there was a waiting period just about everywhere except B&H, but I decided to wait instead of paying $500 over market. (Although I guess you could look at it as paying $500 for them having the units immediately available.)
