I currently have the Rode NT4 mounted to my first XDCam EX with a custom-made home-brew metal bracket that replaced the mic holder and is large enough to accept the humungous mic body of the NT4.

I disassembled this mic to understand its constituent parts, looking for ways to make it smaller. About 88% of the weight is the handle, which serves no function other than housing the battery and acting as a pass through for the wiring to the XLR jack. The head assembly weighs less than two ounces and if there were a way to mount that directly to the XLR plug and to the camera, it would knock about 16 oz off the weight of the whole rig and reduce the bulkiness dramatically.

I wrote to Rode about this two months ago, but never received a response from them.

What I'd like to see is a special version of the NT4 capsule, with a short, thin 24mm tube that fits the Sony mic holder and is about 2.5" long, and with the standard 5-pin XLR connector on the back end.

The whole rig could be much lighter and more agile without this huge mic hanging off of it, by having a version of the NT4 that is made specifically for video cameras.

Does anyone make a stereo X-Y mic that performs like the NT4, yet is 100% business with no excess avoir dupois? I love the NT4, but that huge handle makes it not the most suitable for run & gun ergonomics. With the BP-U60 battery, the whole thing's got to weigh about 9lbs.

What else is out there that sounds the same, has 20-20,000Hz response, and doesn't take away from the sleek and compact formfactor of the EX1?
