I bought an external HDD with a firewire connection so i could dump footage onto it out in the field...

but i cant get it to work.
I followed the instructions the manual gave but when i get to the bit where it says to format the HDD when your in the cameras PC mode i cant select it. It only allows me to select 'verify' not scroll up to 'format HDD'.

anyone got a solution?

thanks

What instructions are you following and what are you trying to do?

If you are using an EXt HD you need to control it from a 'puter and use some software to dump P2 cards to Folders on the HD. (or use Software / capture utility to get DV Tapes to the HD)

Not true. You can put the camera into IEEE HOST mode and have the camera dump the contents of P2 cards directly to a SBP2-compliant Firewire drive.

The drive needs to be partitioned and formatted for FAT32, but the camera can do that for you.

I've heard of problems with some Firewire drives that are compound devices or have non-transparent RAID implementations. What brand and model hard drive / enclosure did you get?

ive got a Western Digital My Book Home Edition 500GB HDD. (model WD5000H1CS-00).

It has USB 2.0, Firewire 400 and eSATA. It is also compatible with Mac's and PC.

post all of the steps that you go through, while you actually do them on your camera. That way we can tell you what you are possibly doing wrong.

I had a problem the first time I tried it, but then went back and read the directions one more time, making SURE to do everything IN ORDER, and it worked fine for me.

Let us know,
Ryan

forget Western Digital My Book. return it and get a Maxtor HDD, or try another brand. I went through three WD My Book's before realizing they are useless with the HVX

We see alot of issues with WDs that have two HDDs with a hardwire raid chip.

That may be your issue.

Interesting...I never realised this could be done at all. Where are the Directions? (Link)

Whoa...messy....I think I will stick with my current workflow using a laptop as intermediary tfer device.

Thanx for info. I had originally bypassed that as irrelevant to my requirements

I have the same difficulty. Seems that, no matter what, the only menu item active is the "SETUP" to set whether to "verify" the transfer. I followed the handbook page 84 to the letter and couldn't get past item 5. Also tried the Barry Green HVX book page 94 to no avail.

Have you solved the problem?

The problem is not with the HDD, it seems to be in the way the HVX202A is setup.
I am trying to set the HVX to a FS100 as described in the Panasonic Handbook (pp 84) and Barry Greens HVX Book (pp94).

Don't know if it has been mentioned but sometimes you gget a multiple host mode problem too. This is where there is more than one hard drive in your external drive case. Seems smart to get a smaller drive that you know has one drive. Send me a PM for more info.

That sucks! Because I was standing there burning my brain last night and went with the MyBook instead of the Maxtor!

I don't capture out in the field with it aniway. I just wanted it to store finished projects and empty my hard drive. (Archive)

I capture on the field with an EZQuest firewire HD. Using EZQ for the past 6 years, no troubles!

Thanks for the info on the WD! My next one will probably be a MAXTOR....

with help from FOCUS Europe.
Connect the HVX 1394 port to the FS-100 "COMPUTER I/O" port.
Turn the FS-100 on, likewise the HVX.
In the FS-100 enable the "DD DRIVE" of the HDD Mode Screen.
"SUCCESS" will be displayed on the FS-100 screen.
Then follow the HVX Handbook pp 84 from item 2.
And that's it. Other issues exist but that's another discussion
Thanks to all contributers.
