Just checking in to see how everyone's coming along on their scripts -

I just knocked out a rough draft, comes in just over 6 pages, and started to stray slightly from the contest parameters - I'm gonna have to whip it back into shape/and/or go with another idea - if I ever have another idea, that is.

How's everyone else doing?

I've spent the last week or so trying to make an idea that I can't get out of my head fit the Fest, and it's just not happening...

just a logline, images in my head and an empty final draft file so far...

I spent this morning writing out ideas, and came up with five contenders. I went ahead and wrangled a first-draft out of one of them, but the others are still calling...

Still chewing on ideas over here.

I'm 5 pages into my first draft. Should be done by the end of the weekend then start the re-write process. Big change from the last fest when I wrote only 1 draft the night it was due.

I've got two ideas having a no holds barred grudge match in my head right now. So far the only thing losing is my sleep.

I'm going to have to write them both out and hopefully one will be clearly better.

I have written two scripts already. The first one was crap and I ended up writing that seamlessly into the last action block itself. The second one is a small portion (6 pages) of a feature I plan on writing, but it holds on its own. I like this one much better and think I will use it, unless I come up with another, better idea.

Finish the first draft - have to make time to rewrite it over-and over and over!
This is the hardest part of script writing!

For me, rewriting is a piece of cake. It's the first draft that's tough!

But I sat down this morning and knocked out the first draft of 'Alien Abduction', and got off several rewrites. Almost finished now. Got slowed down by the fact that I'm multitasking -- in addition to working on the script, I'm also editing a church video and trying to work out a digital special FX sequence for my movie 'Afterlife' on an effects program I'm completely unfamiliar with (FXHome's EffectsLab Pro). Busy busy! :)

hey David is your movie Afterlife a Sci-fi movie?

No, it's a romantic ghost story. :)

Why do you ask?

Sounds great!
Just was interested in the type of genre you was working on...

"Alien Abduction" is finished, registered, and converted to PDF. I certainly hope it doesn't violate any formatting rules, but since nobody's posted those rules yet, I guess I'll take my chances.

Just waiting for word on how to upload!

Done. Had to mess with some dialogue to make it fit into six pages, but done nonetheless. :)

Man ... you guys are quick. I'm still trying to come up with a solid idea. Everything I've come up with so far I later realize is an episode of Twilight Zone, Outer Limits or from some radio drama I've heard :crybaby:

You want an idea? How about this?

A flying saucer lands in a town in the Old West. It's Alien vs. Sheriff -- or Gunslinger. How would a dusty western town deal with an alien visitor?

Here's another nugget that might give birth to an idea....

I heard a guy on the radio once talking about how he was selling time machines on Ebay for (I think) $350. What if some desperate person bought one? Does it really work?

Another nugget.....

I read once about a 'future investing' online scam. Send your money today via a website. According to the site, your money will be invested. When the day comes that time travel is invented, they will travel back in time to the point where you hit that button and made the investment, and they'll take you to the future to collect the huge sums of money your investment earned. So from your perspective, as soon as you give them your money, you're whisked to the future to be RICH. There's gotta be a story in that.

The world is full of ideas. :)

Except that you find you're whisked to Nigeria... :D

Cool. thanks for the ideas ... you're right the world is full of ideas, I just tend to bend them towards ideas I've seen/heard done before.

Once TimeFest wraps up I can focus more on this and then I should be able to come up with something ... though I may use one of those above to kick start me :)

I tell ya, the deadline is too long. I'm done the first and on the second. I think a tighter deadline would motivate people to get off their lazy butts and put pen to paper.

The added benefit is that everyone will have written more scripts, and a larger pool will be available for filming.

David W. Richardson
07-08-2008, 07:14 PM
But the long deadline has given you the chance to write TWO scripts. One is bound to be better than the other. And you may even come up with yet another idea that will trump them both. I always enjoy the luxury of time.

Ah, that is a clone of my own thoughts on the issue. I wrote one piece of cliched crap, then a pretty good script and am taking a break seeing if any other ideas hit me. I am waiting to register mine and start a thread until I get the format guidelines and confirm everything.

I want to start a thread for 'Alien Abduction', but I'm having a hard time coming up with just the right logline.

"It's the end of the beginning...." ??? Maybe???

Was an hour late for work this morning because my brain finally decided to start kicking out pages for my second take on my idea around 7am. Then I looked down at the page count after typing "FADE OUT, and--crap! The last line of dialogue is at the top of page 8! :) Once I take out some of the more blatant directing-on-the-page, though, it'll probably fall in line. :D

Now the question is, is it any good?

I have a rough draft knocked out "The Choice" is the working title. Only comes in at 5 pages in Montage but once I beef up the dialog and make it a little more easy to read should be just about a perfect 6 pages in PDF.

My working title is "Synapse" and right now the plot is about as tangled as the computer cables behind my desk. I know the beginning and end, though, so it's a matter of tuning the important interactions that propel the story and throwing out the distractions.

I settled on one idea, got the beginning and the end. Actually, I have most of it worked out, just need some minor details thought out. One more sleepless night and I'll be ready to put it on paper.

Woohoo! Got my first draft done! Damn! It came in at 10 1/2 pages!
Not sure if I can cut it down to six and still get what I want. :(

So I better have a beer and think on it

I'm having the same six page difficulty. I really enjoyed getting to tell a more complex story with ScriptFest 1, but cest la vie. I'm still trying to determine if the story idea I'm going for will fit in six pages. If not, back to the drawing board.

Hm ... I wonder if I can fit another cliche saying into this post....

Ah, how the title of this thread mocks me...

It came to me, just as I was getting near something that I liked on the idea I mentioned here before, that it wasn't right for this--it was my long-delayed TimeFest idea. :D So then I spent a little time trying to morph the TimeFest idea I actually did have into a Twilight Fest idea, and now I'm totally blocked on every-damn-thing I can think of. So now I'm starting to wonder if I'll even be able to come up with anything for this fest...

Holey fudge. After 3 different ideas and 3 page 1 rewrites on the idea I finally chose, I'm done and cut it to the right length. Probably fine tune until the 10th.
