I'm sure this has been discussed here before, however after spending hours looking over posts I still don't have a definitive answer.

I'm going to be making a documentary and will be shooting all the sit down-type interviews at 960x720 with a HVX200a (just got mine today!). Aside from the HVX footage, the doc will also contain lots of regular MiniDV video that other people shot on Sony cams or whatever, and perhaps even clips from YouTube.

I'll be editing in FCP 6.0.4, and I assume on a NTSC 29.97 timeline since the final product will go to SD-DVD.

I am shooting the interviews with the HVX because I want them to look amazing. Now, the question is this. What format should I shoot the interview footage with on the HVX? I really want to use 720/24pn because I want the film look and to get the most out of the P2 cards. But how do I get a proper, high quality pulldown to get the 29.97?

I anyone could shed some light or give suggestions it would be most appreciated!

Edit - oh yeah I've shot MiniDV forever so HD in an entirely new world to me now. One that I welcome!

Why not shoot a progressive SD p2 interview with the HVX200 and work in that progressive sequence setting.

And then incorporate the NTSC DV footage in that?

So shoot on MiniDV tape with the HVX, or 480i/24p to P2? I notice if you're in one of the 480i settings you have the choice of DVCPRO50, DVCPRO, or DV. Which one of those would I use?

Shoot DVCPro50 to p2 for the best color space.

Now that I think of it, I want those HVX interview shots widescreen, so I'll need to shoot 720. What is the proper way to get 720/24pn into a 29.97 timeline? Would pulldown have to be added in order to do that?

I would just shoot it in 30p but I want to 24 fps film quality look. 30 fps looks too much like video for me.

May be I'm completely wrong on this one because I don't shoot SD, but DVCPro50 should shoot 16:9

yes David it does. 4x3 or 16x9 and it's a nice look for SD.

Thanks Justyn.

There you go.

And to the OP, if the sony footage looks good why not deinterlace it and convert it to DVCPro50 24p using the frame controls tab in Compressor?

Takes a while, and you might have to deal with sync.

Actually not only is DVCPRO 50 able to shoot 16x9. If you are finishing on to a SD source (say a DVD) I'd even contend that the difference between it and 720 are basically nil. 1080 looks slightly sharper and somewhat higher quality to my eye even when downconverted.

Of course if you're shooting 720 24pn you're still more efficient than dvcpro50 in terms of memory use (~40mbps at 720 and 50mps at dvcpro50)
