Hi All,

We're shooting webcasts on P2 cards, using the HVX200 in 720/24p mode. The shooting days are really hectic. I would love to start shooting in 24pN so that the P2 cards would last longer and/or the offload times would be faster.

Since we're just shooting for web, this should be fine. But I'm terrified that several months from now the Director will suddenly ask us to use one of the segments on his TV show. If he does, how do I learn the workflow for taking a 24pN sequence in Final Cut Pro and preparing it for 60i output to Beta SP?

Would this be a nightmare? Should we stick with 24p instead of 24pN?

Thanks,

John

Both 24p and 24pn are the same in FCP as they are both in a 720p24 sequence.

The difference is that you select 24pn when doing the log and xfer into FCP...no pulldown to remove.

My guess is that he is shooting 720/24p over 60

You'll just be adding pulldown in post. It's a very very common procedure, and it's acceptable quality for just about everyone. If the show is broadcast in ATSC, you might just deliver in 24 instead.

Thanks for the quick replies! Yes, we're editing the footage in a 59.94 sequence currently. And I'm new to the whole pulldown process ... one of those "have read about it but never done it" situations ... so, if we shoot 24pn and edit in a 24p Final Cut sequence, what happens if we're forced to output 60i at a later date ... is it a mess to recreate, or is it really straightforward?

Thanks ProfessorU ... I was typing a reply before I saw your post.

So ... adding pulldown in Final Cut is very common ... cool! Where's the best place to learn the workflow properly? It doesn't seem like the FCP manual is real helpful in these areas -- or maybe I'm too dense ... 8-)

It is much easier than you think. I work on TV shows that are shot 720p at 23.98 DVCPRO HD. We edit 29.98, and then output 60i to digibeta...with the use of AJA Kona cards. They add the proper pulldown when you output. No need to edit on sequences that don't match your clip settings. THAT can get you into big trouble.
