hello i have a simple question that is to broad for search. i am shooting a wedding in hd. but is it okay to use a canon a1 and hvx together? can the footage be compatible to edit with each other?

Yes. How painless the process will be depends on your NLE's support for P2. HDV can just be dropped on to a timeline and it'll work just fine.

You might have to do some conversions depending on your NLE. What are you using to edit?

Actually, with some you might have more issues with HDV. I recall Avid Xpress Pro really has some issues if you're shooting in 24f and trying to do frame extractions. I guess if you didn't care about frame extractions and just left both in a 1080i signal then you'd be fine.

24F doesn't have pulldown frame, although it might be a problem if you use the V1U.

for the NLE i am using FCP. and I will be shooting in 720 24pn on the hvx. does that have any effect with the canons way of shooting? I am not familiar with the canon at all or hdv. I only worked with panasonic. the guy i am working with only has a canon a1.

I am pretty sure that the new FCP has the ability to edit a variety of formats at a variety of frame rates all on the same timeline. I might be horribly wrong on this, but that was one of the selling points for me on switching to FCP...which I have yet to do because MAC'S are friggen expensive.

I have been doing it regularly - with the newest version of FCP you just drop it in the timeline...

The show I just finished has about 80% 720/24pn intercut with about 15% 24f (from my previous XL H1) and about 5% footage shot by another on a Sony at 1080i... The 1080i I converted to 24p with Magic Bullet, and it looks amazingly good...

These scenes are not intercut in the sense that they appear together and need to match.. that's a problem because the image from the Panasonic cameras is much richer in color. If you need to do that, you'd probably need to dial down the chroma on the HVX footage using the 3 Way Color Corrector ...

Yeah, that's always going to be your issue mixing Panasonic and other footage. I used to see that a lot when trying to mix the DVX100 and an XL1 or XL2. Panny tends to give much more vibrant colors out of the box (I've heard some Canon guys say they can get that look with they fiddle enough with the XLH1 but I can't speak to that). You're going to want to do as he suggests and dial the chroma down on the HVX200 stuff. I know a lot are tempted to try to dial the chroma up on the other cameras but I don't recommend that as it'll give you some nasty compression artifacts.
