View Full Version : Seriously, would better audio dials kill them?

I know this is an old issue that's been brought up before but would it really make the camera that much clunkier just to have knobs for adjusting the audio levels? I don't always have access to a mixer and I really like recording audio into the camera anyway (even with a mixer I go into the camera) because it saves me time in editing. Recently, as I'm doing more professional stuff, I'm finding it more and more frustrating to not be able to adjust the audio levels as precisely as I'd like.

Why not connect via a Mixer (of your choice) via the Line Inputs.

Lack of money for mixer. More equipment to hall around. More time spent setting up.

The dials have evolved over time (on the DVX versions, for example)... and the driving factor seems to be how easy it is to accidentally change the levels, rather than how easy it is to deliberately change them. That is, it seems preventing accidental level changes while manipulating other camera functions is mush more important to most people than making precise level changes easy. Which makes sense in many situations... most people won't be shooting and riding audio levels at the same time.

It would be nice if a better compromise could be developed, but as far as I can tell that's the reasoning so far.

That makes more sense. Perhaps knobs with a flip open protector like the one that protects the P2 cards would be an optimal solution? You listening Panasonic? There's still time to fiddle with the HPX170.

Or pop-out knobs like the Sound Devices gain controls...

Thats the way the pros do it and if you are doing professional productions and choose to record your audio without a pro recordist...thats the price you pay.

IMHO its not the dials that are the issue..its the Levels Metering. A mixer sorts that and also has input tones.
