Does anybody have an opinion as to what is better-- lightscribe or printing directly to disc? What are the best models of printer to buy for such a thing and what are the cost ranges?

If you ask me, Lightscribe is pretty lame in many ways.

1) Media is expensive
2) You have to flip the disc over by hand
3) It's wicked slow
4) Doesn't look that great in the end - more like a watermark

With the new glossy waterproof media, inkjet printing looks very nice an d doesn't smear. It's color, better looking, faster, cheaper. I use a Primera Bravo SE (~$1400) which can burn & print up to 20 discs at a time unattended.

I'll second that. I've been looking around recently, and that's an incredible bet! I used to have a lightscribe. I never loved it. It was fine, but no love.

Lightscribe is a kinda cool effect, but has more drawbacks than features. Aforementioned reasons.
