If you haven't downloaded the new FireFox v3 yet, you can get it here (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/).

Most people don't know this (I know a lot here do), but photos/images when they are rendered as files have a profile associated with them. To see the picture correctly, the program you are using to view the photo must recognize the profile for you to see it correctly. For years, web browser have only looked at images as using one profile which is the sRBG profile. But now Firefox 3 is color managed. What this means is that all color profiles will now display correctly, instead of displaying with wacky color.

As an example, here is a photo that should display correctly as sRGB.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3239/2327083919_374988878f.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/divotfilms/2327083919/)

Here is the same picture that should not display correctly if you do not have a color managed browser. It uses an Adobe RGB profile.

Point being is that FireFox will now take care of this for you, and prevent you from seeing photos with these honky colors. Except, it's not turned on by default. So here's how to do it.
In the address bar of Firefox, type in about:config.
Scroll down to gfx.color_management.enabled. By default it's set to false. Double click on it to change it to true. Restart Firefox. Viola.

Version 3 is also just a much faster browser, which of course is another bonus. After you install it, check out the photos above and they will both look the same. It's magic.

As a side note, Safari has done this for forever....but I like FireFox better. Even on my Mac.

Wait. Define "wacky", maybe we can help. There shouldn't be any problems.

Safari has this feature built in also.

Always, the Mac folks have to weigh in. *sighs*

Nice find Dan, i'm upgrading as soon as I finish this post.

Safari, meh, see how many software titles are there for your Mac comparatively, and then come back with a little more punch.

Macs are now running Windows/Linux with Intel chips. What does that tell you?

Talk about taking someone out of context. I merely wanted to point that out to safari foke as a missed it in Dans original post. it is possible that, if Dan hadnt pointed it out some people on Safari may have thought they needed to dl ff to be able to see images correctly. But again, I missed that part.

Again... I missed that part.

No skin off my back.

Lets not forget that Safari is not just a Mac app. It also installs on windows, and works quite well. As for all this other Apple vs. Mac junk, who cares. I edit on an XP machine and use a MacBook for my laptop (although I plan on turning that windows machine into a Ubuntu server and getting an iMac for a desktop). Using a C2D processor was one of the smartest things that Apple ever did if only from the standpoint that they are selling record numbers of product to people who would have never considered them otherwise.

All that said, I use FireFox as a browser regardless of the OS. It's the shiz!

Hmm. I'm starting to have some image problems since doing this. Dan, maybe you can help me out. When I open the image below in my picture program, it looks fine. However on this browser, the colors are WAY off. How does it look to you right now? Is everyone purple and green? That's what I see on my browser, since taking those steps you mentioned...http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5363/postcardweb1fv5.jpg

Yeah, the color is pretty off in FireFox. IE7 will not even display it, but it does work in Safari.

What color profile did you render this to? This is the first image I have seen that didn't render properly. I noticed in the EXIF that you were using PS7. Is this and older color profile? I'm thinking that FireFox might have only included support for newer profiles if that is the case.

The original file is the same way, which was completed in whatever software my design guy uses, I think it is CS3, however I resized it to show you, using PS7, but the original was bad on the browser too. So, what do you think I should do? I can't be seeing headshots screwy online or I'll go out of business :)

So what was the fix?

alveraz
06-29-2008, 10:26 PM
the designer did it for print, so it was cmyk. this is for web, rgb :)

So I guess FireFox would not read CMYK properly. Interesting that Safari did though. I tested it with AbobeRGB and AdobeProPhoto and didn't have an issue with either of those.
