That sounds sooo good! I really long for a FX-chip camera...
So what's the difference to the D3?

So what's the difference to the D3?

It's obviously a smaller package. Some of the things that would come to mind, and are normally the case in these packages:

- the shutter will be rated for a lower life
- I doubt it will have the dual CF cards
- no audio recording functionality
- It should have a built in flash
- Slower FPS
- Obviously misses the features of a smaller body like vertical shutter release (although available on MB-D10)
- shorter battery life

Of course these are all quick guesses, and I'm sure I've left out something.

Has anyone here invested in DX lenses? I have 3 now, so I'm kind of forced to stay with DX cameras. I know you can use DX lenses on the FX cameras, but then there is no point in having full frame since the lenses dont use the whole sensor.

I am invested in DX glass...

DX cameras are awesome, especially if you shoot sports. My 70-200 becomes an effective 300mm lens. Wide glass like the 10-20mm Sigma exists so that not having full frame doesn't mean that you can't shoot wide.

Plus, whenever you want to shoot fullframe, use a film camera.

I'm not saying that the D3 isn't an incredible camera. I shot with it a few weeks ago and loved it, but that being said, it's not a need...

Then again, there are people who will run out and buy the latest and greatest regardless of whether they need to upgrade....

Here is a guess to why they are calling it the D700 and not the D400-D600.

The number 4 is bad luck in Japan. 5 is because that is currently Canon's mid ranged full frame camera. And 6 because canon is going to come out with the 6D and Nikon putting 7, so it seems that it is a newer camera than the 6D.

I have a 70-300, a 50 1.8, and a 20 2.8 that are all full frame. I've tried to invest so that I am future proof for FX sensors. I doubt I'll be running out any time soon to drop $3k on this camera, but I have no doubt as some point I'll convert to it.

My 17-50 Tamron was a cheap DX lens, and I got it to have a fast lens at a cheap price until I could afford a FX lens/lenses to cover that range.

Thanks for the info... that's not too bad, the D3 is way too upper class for my anyways.

I sold all my DX lenses half a year ago, because of getting some good ones for my 35mm adaptor. I had the Canon 20D and the Tamron 28-75 / 1:2.8 (which is actually an FX lens, but I needed Nikon lenses because of the manual aperture ;) ) and the 10-22mm / 1:3,5-4,5.
It was terrible selling that good stuff, but having now two neat Nikon manual fullformat primes there is no way of going back to DX.

Looks like the D700 will be the camera of choice... anytime I can afford it, same thing like you, Dan! :)

Though the point with sports-photography is a good one...

Why do all the D700 images look like crap? I mean, if you got your hands on one of these, wouldnt you be at least a somewhat decent photographer?

hahaha so true... meh i'm not buying this anytime soon but i'm happy because it will drive down the price of the old D200's which i am still completely content with.

I need a 2nd body anyhow.

Maybe they don't want it to compete yet with the D3?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=9DKi4FAl2Ds

The D3 is around $5,000 though. I don't know what the proposed price would be for the D700. It would have to be competitive with Sony's price of 2-2.5K dollars I would think on their full frame A900 due out in August.

report from a german magazine about the D700. Available end of July, about US 3k (direct conversion from euro currency to us currency). Also note the new SB-900 flash system.

At twice the price yet having the same resolution of the D300, I think one might be better off waiting for the D800 before plunging in. But this sure give the Canon 5d a competition.

I'm actually pretty surprised the info. leaked out so early.
All the scans from Japan a while back, now from Germany, and even the fine folks from France providing a Full Video Review (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5ye9t_nikon-d700-presentation_tech) of the new D today.

All and all, looks like a very capable camera, and I can't wait to see the images it produces in available low light scenes at ISO 1600 and higher.
The introductory price doesn't really agree with me, but that doesn't mean I deny its worth.

There are still more announcements expected to come from Canon, Sony, and possibly yet another full frame from Nikon.
Should get pretty interesting in the remaining months of 2008.

The SB800 is fine. Not really any hands on specs about the 900 yet. Just don't over heat the thing. (10 consecutive shots in a row) let it cool for almost 10 minutes. If the 900 has an inner-cooler though... might be worth the investment.

However, the 800 is nice because you can power it up with a quantum pack.

5D and full frame.... makes timur happy. I was sorely missing my Film cameras. this is the best of both!

Full frame is good.... im glad nikon joined the party... now a 5D markII can come out! then a D800! yay!

I bit the bullet!
And decided to get this over the D3.
Should be here late July - early August.

The hard part was deciding between the 14-24mm f/2.8 and the 24-70.
Since I already have a 16mm, I just decided to get the 24-70.

Now that it being full frame, I think the 24 will be wide enough.
Not sure about the SB900 though. I am pretty happy with my quantum flash. At times, I do have to blast away and I need something that won't overheat.

I had gone through 3 different SB800s within a year due to melting. I bought one Q-flash and it's been a trooper. I will probably only get the SB900 if it has a built in inner-cooler type of system different than the SB800.

Hey Wave, can you elaborate on your SB800's melting? I've never had a problem nor have I heard of one melting, let alone three. Wow. Were you shooting on the sun? :)

When I do live events (if I am not house photographer), I have to shoot more than the allocated manual recommendations of 10 shots in a row with the SB-800. After that, the flash needs to rest for about 10 minutes to cool off. So the last couple of years I've been alternating cameras to let the flash cool off. Every once in awhile though, I need to blast as many shots as I can before the celebrity walks off. Unfortunately at times, they're only there for 5-10 seconds. So I need to pretty much hold the trigger down and shoot as many as I can and hope a couple of those shots are with the celeb looking directly at me. Being in the pit, it's hard to get a celeb to look for more than 3 seconds. Unfortunately, I'm usually the shortest photographer in the pit lol. And if anyone has a slow flash, the celeb thinks you're done shooting, and they'll look somewhere else. (I usually shoot -1 power)

I do like the SB-800. Just not for my more demanding events.

With my 5DR, I can blast shots all night. Sometimes during large group shots, I can blast 20-30 shots in a row. (hard to get a group of 5-10 people looking at you all at once with 30 other photogs there screaming) Then... there's the paparazzi trying to weazle their way in sometimes.

It looked similar to this
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1092/1439774570_a0936b4b0a.jpg?v=0
The story behind this one. (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1092/1439774570_a0936b4b0a.jpg%3Fv%3D0&imgrefurl=http://www.flickr.com/photos/carak/1439774570/&h=375&w=500&sz=121&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=5dsfGUoLzmR_vM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmelted%2BSB-800%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN)

It's not an uncommon thing known between fashion photographers. I know a few people who have melted theirs. When I went to Nikon to have it fixed, the girl at the desk told me one of their hard-core fashion photographers has gone through over 30 SB-800s since their release. Forgot the guy's name.

Also, hopefully with the SB-900 it has some sort of battery life indicator and a better battery door. The doors on those things snap pretty easily on the 800.

Just wondering if anyone has the Intensity capture card and can take a grab of the D700 HDMI that way ? In 1080i mode ? Thanks!
