Use the test account to view the films, and pm Larry R and tell him you need him to authenticate your account so you can vote.
Ok. If you have a problem with a download or a film post it here.
Then, try the download again until it works. There are a lot of mirrors and you will get success. So, if it doesn't work once, try again.
Larry is trying to verify all of the films to all of the mirrors, which comes out to several hundred files that need to be checked and verified, etc. so it takes time. Time that the impatient lot of you can't afford :)
Post up your issues here, so Larry can check into them.

Jason

Jason Ramsey

Jason: Minor glitch. Larry's getting it now.
Justin: You can login to the site and view the films. You just cannot vote on them. Go to the site, user your dvxusername and password to log in and start downloading away. If you are unable to login for some reason, post it here and/or send a pm to Larry and we'll get you fixed up.
Ben: Larry will get you taken care of. I've let him know.

I just kept reopening to get through the rest of the film, but it was a bit annoying.

For those of you who can't login, try again and BE SURE to use the exact login you use here at dvxuser. If you have spaces, underlines, etc in your username be sure they match. And, of course, use the same password.
If you still have trouble let me know again and I'll see what I can do to get you in as quick as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.
RPDM has been fixed, should work fine now.
The O2 issue may be a bad mirror push ... I'll check the mirrors now and update any files that may not be complete. Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

Chris - try again ... I just tried and it worked fine. Sometimes it's a bandwidth issue. If too many people hit the same server at the same time, it gives an error, when there really isn't one.

I have a workaround .. let me get it in place and I'll PM you the info.

These are quicktime h.264 files ... they won't play in Windows Media Player. What issue exactly are you having?
Do you have Quicktime, but they won't open? Or do you not even have quicktime installed?
I can't remember which version of Quicktime introduced the h.264 codec, but if you have an older version than that could be the problem. Might want to try installing the latest version. Or install the VLC Media Player, which is supposed to play all media types.

Did someone go and change somehting with the ZIP files? Larry? I started downloading the first one this morning, left the house, and came back expecting a finished download but found a "Server Timed OUt" error. Now I have to do it again, after I finish uploading my 1000th post video to Vimeo so I can add it to my 1000th post thread. (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=138777)

try a few times. there may be issues with one of the mirrors and Larry will check it out later.
There is more than one mirror though, so trying a few times should get it to work for you.
Plus if one server is getting hit a lot, it may go down for a brief moment due to overload but will come back up within a few minutes.

06-19-2008, 07:42 PM
Yeah, I apologize, this is a known issue but with the massive rework I had to do for the new voting scheme I didn't have time to address this. Currently it uses a random number generator to pick the mirror to serve which means sometimes you get the same mirror over and over several times in a row, thus getting the same problem file.
I have an improved system, but still need to implement it. So please be payient and try again. I can guarantee that 95% of the time you should get a good file ... that other 5% can be pretty annoying though :)

Ok, I've found the issue ... but don't have a ready solution. The problem has something to do with the host where the code resides. I know this because when I move the "authentication" code over to my personal server it works flawlessly.
I'm not sure if it's a timeout issue, or perhaps some additional security measures that may have been implemented on the current host or what.
I'll continue to work on getting past this issue, but in the meantime just continue to PM me if you can't login and I'll modify your login record so you can get in.

Just a suggestion for future voting (if you keep the voting like this again), but it would be helpful for me if there was a picture related to all the films in the voting list. I'm going through them, but I'm well aware I'm going to end up judging slightly differently on different days. And I'm not likely going to remember which film is which just on title alone, so having small posters (even two versions of the page) would be very helpful in making sure that after I've seen all the film they're all ranked comparatively overall (i.e. if I rank 2 films a 10, but watched them on different days, having a poster of which film is which would help jog my memory if one was significantly better than the other. In which case I would probably re-adjust my scale a bit to reflect that)
Not sure if that's even possible, but it's an idea to consider.

I didn't think that this was worthy of an entire thread so I thought I would ask here. What happens to movies that are not voted for at all? For instance, what if I don't vote for my movie? Does this just mean that it has one less rating?
Or... what if someone watches a couple of movies and votes for them but not the rest?
Just curious as to how this is working.
Also... for large crews.... it says that only one filmmaker can vote for their production. Not the entire crew. How is that monitored? For instance, I used some of Justin's music for my movie. It wasn't made specifically for my movie though. Can he rate my movie?
Just curious as to how this is all working out in the grand scheme of things.
Thanks,
Mike
Jason Ramsey

The way the voting system is setup, we've basically increased the number of votes without increasing the number of voters b/c now you aren't just rating three films, you are rating them all (hopefully).
If you don't vote for your own film... more power to you.... the impact on your overall rating would be so negligible it's ridiculous... less than .01 impact even with just 100 votes on your overall rating based on the way the voting is tabulated.
20 people who voted for their film for the maximum rating would really only impact their film by about .3 of a point for the average. Again, the impact is negligible compared to what it could have been in the past. Without going too much into detail, we're working more with averages rather than total point values here, and the averages are formed from a much larger sample based on the changes and point values with the voting system.
Beyond that, we have all the data at our disposal and can and will be reacting accordingly to any kind of shadiness .
You are encouraged to rate every film. If you wish to abstain from rating your own film, I will applaud you :) and, you can be safe in knowing that by not voting for your own film the impact is going to be so negligible that the chances of it effecting the outcome are next to none.
There's lots of stuff we will be monitoring behind the scenes as well, but just the rating system on it's surface will help curtail a lot of potential issues.
I think what you were talking about with only the submitting filmmaker being allowed to vote only applies to folks with less than 50 posts.
Later,
Jason
Michael Anthony Horrigan
06-20-2008, 04:00 PM
Cool! I'm not so worried about shadiness, just how it works to not vote for a film. My own in particular. Seems like it won't matter much. Looks like you're taking an average of just the votes received. That should work.
Although it would be funny if a movie only received one vote but it was 10 stars.
I'm assuming that a movie with 40 votes and an average rating of 7 would beat it out? :D
I won't vote for my own. Thanks for the explanation.
Cheers!

Mike, I had some of the same questions. I really think overall this is a kick-ass new voting system, and I love the ratings. I watch a film and bam! No having to remember anything, etc...
EDIT: Also, still wondering how long we have to view/vote...?

Look up a few posts and click that link. Use it to be able to view the films. Larry will fix your login when he has a chance.
Nick: Keep in mind there will be two rounds of voting this time around. The first round will probably last a week or so. There is no hard date, b/c we want to make sure everyone has ample time to watch and vote and we log as many votes as possible, so we're kinda playing it by ear. The 2nd round though, will probably have a hard stop time.
Total viewing and voting period for both rounds will probably run a couple of weeks or so... We'll just have to see.
We've gotten quite a good number of votes already and we're just on day two, so we'll see.
Later,
Jason

:banned: DOUBLE POST!!!
Sorry Jason, I was just kidding!
I should be able to have them all watched in a week or so anyway, so that sounds good. Thanks!

When I download "Simon Van Winkle" it says "The movie could not be opened"

I have four of the zipped folders downloaded but they don't appear as zipped folders. They have a quicktime symbol and when I try to open them a 2048 error comes up informing me they are not movies.

yeehaanow - I downloaded the file from all the mirrors and it was fine ... try downloading again and see if that resolves your issue.
Weston - that's weird, but if the files are showing up as quicktime files somehow they got saved with the wrong extension (I'm guessing). Try renaming them to zip files and see if you can uncompress them then.

Did I miss this somewhere? How long will the first round of voting last?

Is it just me or does the direct link to "Ad Infinitum" actually take you to "Facebook Gangsta" in the Cafe?

We don't have a set close time yet for the voting. We'll let you know when it gets close. The main thing is just watching the voting and making sure everyone has ample time to view and vote. Once it looks like most people that are going to have rated the films, then we'll probably put out a last call with a hard stop date on the voting.
Make sense?

I am having problems voting. Either that or I am not able to. Could you let me know one way or another?
Thanks,

Pauly, just said this in your thread but in case you missed it. You had less than 100 posts when viewing began which would disqualify you from voting. Larry may lift that since you have now met the requirement, but I am not sure.

At least that's how it's been in the past I believe. Must just be a glitch in the new system.

You are right Mike. I had forgotten about that little quirk.
Also, to the person above me who is wondering about why they can't log in: look back a few pages and you will find that 5 million people already asked this question and it has been answer 10 million times. :D

Error message on top of screen when attempting to view R.P.D.M:
"Warning: filesize() [function.filesize]: stat failed for /home/fest_admin/dvxfest.com/host_mirror/time08/entries/R.P.D.M.-Mark_Harris.mov in /home/.malin/fest_admin/dvxfest.com/timefest/index.php on line 23"
Attempt to "save target as" results in an error message that I choose not to type unless requested.

ok, thanks for the head's up ... I'll check it out. In the meantime just try downloading again, as there are several other mirrors which should be fine.

It doesn't appear to have been a downloading issue as I was just able to left click and download it, the problem happens when I try to right click and "save target as" anyway, I'm rockin and rollin now, thx.
Not an issue, more of a request, if it wouldn't be too much trouble:
I think it would be cool to be able to sort films by individual rating. I know we aren't 'ranking' the films per say, but maybe we were harsher on the films we watched first or vice versa; being able to view a general ordering of the films as imposed by ourselves might be beneficial to see if we're being unfair to any particular films and change our votes accordingly. Just a thought.

Hey guys,
I think the Seattle Green "discuss" link is sending us to Myopia's page. Just a heads up.

I'm trying to download the zip files, but it constantly times out after downloading various amounts. There's so many films I don't want to sit here clicking on movie after movie to download them. I'd like to just get them all and watch them at my leisure. Any better way of getting these zips?
Larry R

Seattle Green discussion link fixed.
flmmkr - many people have successfully downloaded the zips from each of the mirrors. Our mirror hosts have sufficient bandwidth so if you are timing out it is somewhere along the chain between your machine and the mirror. It could be any number of issues, perhaps your ISP throttles your web access and only allows so much bandwidth at a time, etc.
It's an extremely difficult thing to pin down, you might try downloading at a different time of day. There are times of peak traffic that could be causing the issue. Maybe start them late at night and let them run overnight. In the meantime youcould start downloading individual films so you can watch some.
Actually, the way the download/vote is set up, you could actually download a film, once it's downloaded, start another download, then open the first and watch it. When you are done, rate the film (1 = terrible, 10 = fantastic), then optionially click on "Discuss" and give your feedback. Next start another download, then watch the second entry that was downloading while you were watching the first. Just an idea :)

Thanks to the member who suggested VLAN, I've seen every film save for The Dustin Rogan Project (http://www.dvxfest.com/host_mirror/time08/entries/The_Dustin_Rogan_Project-Dustin_R._Rogan.mp4) - which returns an error every time I download and try to open it.
If this one film keeps my votes from being counted, I'll just give Dustin a 10-star to get it done. I think he deserves a little edge, just because he's a special fellow.
THIS FILE NOW WORKS. And holy crap, am I ever glad that I saw it before I gave Dustin ten stars. Now, after viewing it, I know this is the one, true ten-star picture in the entire festival!

I've viewed all of the entries except for The Five Worst Days of Bartholemew Saxton. That one keeps bringing up an error.
I've watched all except for 'The Five Worst Days .....', 'The Game', The Farewell and 'Reprieve' I heard the sound okay, but couldn't get picture :oS :(
Thank you to all who entered, I enjoy watching the Fests :)
