View Full Version : Is 400mb too much?

If you've been keeping up with my thread, you'd know that once viewing is open, I will be simultaneously hosting an HD version of my film, The Rooster.

My question is, is 400mb too big of a file for everyone? Would you prefer it smaller or?

I only ask because I have it compressed really nicely for quality, but the size is a little heft.

Why not upload it to Vimeo HD? It's free and the quality is excellent.
You can upload your 400MB file to it.

Just a thought...

Cheers,

Mike

Well, you shouldn't simultaneously host an hd version of your film if you want to remain eligible for competition :)

400 is quite large... at least for me on satellite internet. I'll never download it

You can't host your own version of the film until after voting closes if you want to remain eligible.

Jason

I would think you can get that down to 150mb easy while maintaining nice quality at 720p. 400mb is a bit much.

well ignore me then :)

400 is a bit large though for most folks.

Just out of curiosity, what compression settings are you using?

You did upload your film to dvxfest didn't you? More people will see it if you are part of the pack of the fest.

Jason

My initial impression is that 400mb is a little much for a short film.

Personally, when I'm looking at video content on the internet I want to be able to click and start watching as soon as reasonably possible. I think with a 400mb file, you're gonna be asking people to click and then walk away for a while. Which is fine, just not my preference. The internet's strong suit is not necessarily providing the highest-quality video -- but providing good quality video for immediate consumption.

That being said, if you're just looking to provide an awesome-quality version for people who are already fans of the compressed version then go for it! But I bet you could still get an awesome looking video for well under 400mb.

Tommy? Did somebody mention "quality whores"? Isn't that what you were asking about yesterday?

Vimeo. 720p, and you can start viewing immediately as it buffers.

400 is a bit much. Even on a good data line here at work 400 MB will take enough time for a coffee break and a smoke. That's a long time to wait for a file. However, to download and hold onto, it is fine.

Yeah Vimeo is great but I would wait for a 400 after I watch the smaller one and liked it enough.
