I'm thinking about getting either Motion or After Effects...which is better? Can that be answered objectively, or is that sort of an opinion thing? Is one better for some things and one better for other things? All thoughts/opinions welcome.
Thanks,
Joel

Wow. I thought this one might generate a little discussion. Anyone have an opinion? Used either one?

I only know a little about Motion from what a friend has shown me. But for me and for what I do (compositing and complex motion graphics with 3D layers) After Effects wins hand down.

Although I love the particle system of Motion.

Motion is a better option I feel. The whole effects package and particle system really generates quality works..

There is a lot more to effects than just pretty particles (as good as they are in Motion) but its going take quite some time yet for Motion to catch up to AE which has been the industry standard for Compositing and Effects for broadcast and film for the last 15years or more. An editor I work closely with does some pretty cool stuff in Motion but he often has to go into AE to do things he can't yet do in Motion.

Take a look at www.videocopilot.net (http://www.videocopilot.net) and have a look at some of the video tutorials. If you never new exactly what AE can do then these tutorials will give you a pretty clear idea.

Thats true I guess. After Effects has been the standard for a while..But wouldn't really make a difference to say a novice would it ?
