Another half-mile or so down the road, lies Slab City. This is apparently sort of the town square, where to post flyers and notices.

Most of Slab City's residents depart for cooler climes around the end of May. The remaining population is apparently too small to keep the little store and diner open, so it's closed until the 'snowbirds' return.

Probably the most eye-catching object at Slab City was this truck. A little piece of LA, 230 miles out in the desert...

...overall, unless you are jonesing to check out an interesting location at first hand - like I was - I don't recommend this ride. The are many miles of fun snakey twisty mountain roads, but nothing superior to routes like the Angeles Crest or Santa Monica Range canyon roads. There are also long miles of agricultural routes with maliciously-timed traffic lights, bone-dry desert and highway drone.

What I'm mostly glad for on this ride, was having met Leonard and seen his creation up close, and for some of the little oddities I found along the way.

And those french fries.

Hope people enjoy this. And that maybe it inspires them to take a nice ride someplace.

Just watched "Into the Wild" and saw Leonard in the movie. Is that what inspired you to go find Slab City?

I had vaguely heard of Slab City before seeing the movie, but didn't really even know which state it was in. The movie sort of solidified my interest in seeing the place at first hand. I think they referenced Slab City in Independence Day, too, although I don't remember if they actually shot out there.

Leonard is very pleased, by the way, with the increased number of visitors he gets, since the movie came out. He's glad that more people are coming to see the Mountain. He even hands out free jigsaw puzzles (against all odds, mine survived 200+ miles webbed to the back of the bike) and a DVD documentary about his work...

That was really interesting! Thanks for posting those pics, I love finding those random abandoned shacks out in the middle of nowhere.
