View Full Version : 1st Time Filmmakers & 1st Time Entrants Say Hello Here

Two elements I really enjoy about these fests are
1) Meeting members - both those that have been around for a while but our paths haven't crossed and those who were drawn to User specifically for the fest.
and
2) Being a part of people's first filmmaking experience. Really cool to see people take that first step and become a filmmaker and really cool to be able to discuss their films and give feedback here.
So if you are new to the fest or are a first time filmmaker. Say hello here - if you would like to - and tell us which category you fall into so we can give you a proper welcome.
And tell us something about yourself too
(filmmaking experience, geographic location, which Superfriend you identify most with, anything)
Finally ... PLEASE ... PIMP YOUR FILM HERE.
Stickying this so we can welcome you but also so you guys can get some more attention. Maybe not as much attention and Fat Monster, but hey, it's a start :)
Links to your thread are encouraged in other words.

Great idea, Jack! This is actually going to be my first fest entry (if I can get it off the ground). It will hardly be spectacular, but hey, I had a good time. The film is called "Prove It" and the thread can be found here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=130410
Good luck everyone!

Hello... My name is Zaza...and I WANT to be a film Maker someday!
I'm new to this site (2-3 months) and was SO glad to have found it. I've found it to be filled with THE most talented people who give THE best advise...all ages, sizes & shapes.
I'm completely new to all this. Just bought a DVX100b a few months ago and am trying to find my way around it. I've also bought a few items from you folks via the Marketplace (thank you very much...you are all great to work with...nothing but good experiences).
I can be found in the upstate New York area. I develop interactive software for a living and have been around video for years, but never had the chance to really use it as an artistic platform...it's always just been a small piece of what I do.
I'm also a musician, toured for years opening for acts like Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Kansas, Pat Travers & Rainbow to name a few. I built, owned & operated 3 different commercial recording studios...and the 4th is now in what used to be my livingroom!
I did score an independent film years ago by a local film maker (who's name escapes me at the moment) called "Goddess of the Heart"...I think that's where the idea started.
Enough for now...I'm just glad to have found you all and look forward to learning this art and adding anything I can to help out!
Cheers,
-Zaza
Oh...Superman...Superman is by far my favorite hero!!!

First time filmmaker here.
I've worked on a bunch of sets but never actually produced, directed, or shot my own short.
I'm in high school and the age thing makes it hard to get a lot of interest in my projects. I've tried to make a couple films before but just gave up before making any dramatic steps (getting others involved). This time I basically forced myself towards the next step. I set up auditions, scheduled a weekend to shoot on, got some crew, etc. Once other people are involved, I couldn't back out and this was good for me.
I got a bunch of help from some DVXusers in Austin. Luis Caffesse, Matthew Rodwell, Jason Egan, and Robert Werden all lent me a hand in one way or another.
I learned that I'm not very good at directing actors. I love having creative control, but I almost feel that I can't effective communicate with actors. I've read the book Directing Actors, and I used all of its techniques, but I couldn't get the exact performances I wanted. Next time I direct a film I'll have rehearsals. I just didn't have enough time in my schedule for rehearsals on this one, but I will next time.
It's also pretty hard to direct and DP a film. I was so worried about the lighting that some other things felt a little weaker in my opinion.
Another thing I'll do next time is get a second person to review my shot list. There are some seemingly obvious things I missed that wouldn't have happened if I had somebody give it a quick look before shooting.
All in all, it was a great experience. Shooting a film is a mixture of super high stress and fun. There's this indescribable adrenaline that I'm sure everybody here has felt that I only get on film sets. I can't wait for my next one.
Oh, and here's the link to my thread even though it's my signature:

Thanks Jack, although this is not going to be an amazing example of my work. I am a script writer first and a decent actor at times but this time I am doing the whole deal with a variety of limitations and roadblocks, but I am running with it anyway.

Long time poster, first time entering a DVX fest. I was here when the fests only allowed DVX's, thus ruling me out automatically. Then I went and purchased an HV20 - but never used it. Got the thing a few weeks after it came out. It was then I actually started working in the industry.
I've PA'd on sets, been a casting Intern, ran audio, DOP'd, Gripped, AD'd, Produced numerous films. I'm actually going to school still. Been lucky enough to work with an F900, once you go cinealta, you never go back. Work with 16mm film a lot.
My entry, B-Nice, is my first DVXuser entry. I've decided to forgo the equipment I normally use and try this without any professional gear - aside from gaff tape, HV20, and Rode VideoMic. :)

Hey all!
I joined this site in April. I lurked for a couple weeks when my older brother sent me the link. Then I saw the Scriptfest contest which was ending the next day, so I slapped together a 9 page script in 6 hours (it showed) and submitted . Yep that's what I like to do is write. I'd also like to get into the production track. And makeup effects is another hobby; I did some casualty simulation makeup for a few Air Force exercises last summer.
I spent 7 1/2 years in the Air Force and separated in January (although will probably join the reserves). I decided to take the plunge into filmmaking and am enrolling in film school out in Colorado in the fall (whoo, hoo GI Bill). My brother has spent one year there already. With the logistics and training I put together last summer for the Air Force, I think film production is really similar.
I'm extremely new to filmmaking, the Timefest entry is my second film. My first was a zombie short (go figure) for the Diary of the Dead contest back in February. I did help my brother on two of his film school assignments when I visited him last Thanksgiving. Two days of sitting on his set soaking things in like a sponge, loved it. I have no equipment but my Macbook and final cut but that doesn't stop. I just know that in filmmaking you learn by doing.

Oh hi der!
The Five Worst Days in the Life of Bartholomew Saxton is my first film fest entry. I was introduced to the DVXuser when I worked on Dustin Rogan's Given.
I graduated from Elon University (private university in NC) a year ago and have been living in Waco, TX since then. I work for an ABC affiliate as the video editor for the morning news. I'm here until my fiancee (we get married in a month!) finishes grad school in Directing for Theatre. Then we plan to open up a theatre company somewhere in TX.

I've been a member of this extremely knowledge community for a while. I wrote a script for lovefest (but it didn't pan out). This time around I posted an ad and got a response from fellow member Dick Campbell. He drove to Dallas from Waco to shoot a 10 page script in one evening (from dusk till dawn, literally). It had been a fantastic experience from start to finish. I've learned a great deal about planning and getting an official script supervisor!
I've done a couple films personally (nothing big), and this is really my first "true" short. I have pretty big ambitions to complete a feature in the next year or so, and I'm really using shorts as a fun vehicle to learn the trade. It is a great thing a community like this exists.
I'm also a pretty big film buff... As well as music buff...

My name is Kevin, this is my first entry to a dvxuser fest (or any festival for that matter). I plan on attending a film school and becoming a filmmaker. I have worked on a few sets with a friend of mine that goes to USC film school. I have been apart of this forum for awhile now and I am VERY excited for the fest!
I have learned so much from this forum and I am still continuing to learn. I want to learn everything about this craft. and I agree with Haxel (^^^) this community is a great thing to have and I think I can say on behalf of all new filmmakers that things like this forum are what really inspire me to keep on going.

I've been posting for a while now but beyond a very low budget feature which i was the camera man on, this is my first real do everything production. I hope it comes out well. Working with Nick and FDL (Francesco) has been great, this forum is so interesting with all the international collaboration possibilities.
Please critique my short and give me some advice on how to better tell the story. I definitely need it but hey, at least i've gone out and made something :)

I can only second this. Just being a member here as put me in contact with not only Brad, but many other filmmakers who are in need of scripts. Working with you was great as well, and I can't wait to see what you've done with what I put on paper. Thanks for the props.
I guess I never really formally introduced myself in this thread. I live literally in the middle of nowhere, in Coarsegold, California. I know what you are thinking "Is that a real town in California?" and the answer is...no. Just kidding...it is, unless I am living in some crazy parallel universe or something. ("Coarsegold" Coming Fall of 2009!*) But I am a writer and sometimes an actor and this will be my first fest and one of my first "do everything" productions. This is a great community of very talented and kind individuals and I couldn't be more proud and thankful to be a part of it.
*Not a real production. Or will it be? I don't know...

I guess i didn't really introduce myself either... My names Brad Crawford, i've been living in Osaka for the past 3 years doing photography and video works as well as the ol' teaching English for money.
I'm originally from Winnipeg (http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/mywinnipeg/trailer/), Canada and will be heading back there this summer for the first time in 3 years. If there are any other Winnipeggers (or even nearby Canadians... north dakota?) out there that wanna make films, i'm excited to get right to work on some more assoon as i'm home.

Hello to everyone!
This is my first DVXFest to enter...although, technically I attempted to make a film for DramaFest (over a year ago) which ended up turning into this 41-minute monstrosity that took over a year to finish!
God and Country (http://www.godandcountrymovie.com)
So, this time around I actually made a film that fit the time limit:
The Small Multiple (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=131864)
I was born and raised in Texas and do freelance directing/editing to make money while pursuing my dream of filmmaking. To second what everyone else has said this is a fantastic community to be a part of and I have learned TONS from the people here.
Please watch the film (you can find the thread through my banner as well) and give me any critiques/thoughts/criticisms that come to mind...they will be greatly appreciated!!!
Ciao.

This is mine and Ken's first fest entry ever! We're very glad we've entered, looking forward to the reviews.
What Shawn said. :) And thank you for the welcome! I hail from the Portland area and love it here! The Super Friend I most identify with is Plastic Man. And yes, he did make an appearance on Super Friends once. He was one of my favorites as a kid. Still is!
Feel free to click on our banner to check out our Aetas thread. We're pretty excited about the film. It's got an epic feel to it and we drove all over the state to capture the various terrain Oregon has to offer. We were blessed with a talented cast who could act (and learned their lines in Latin) and a great and supportive crew who got down into the trenches with us to make this happen.

Hey there,
first time entrant here and actually I could say first time filmmaker too. I made a short commercial for a contest before and some fun shoots, but this is the first real film I made that is truly planned. For All Hallows Fest I planned on shooting an entry, but it never left the planning stage, so I am happy that I finished this one.
About me:
I wrote quite alot here on DVXuser in the past months. The 1000th post is not far away anymore.
I am a student of electrical engineering (media engineering) in my last year. In 2007 I headed to Japan for a 6 month internship. Over there I found DVXuser and bought an HVX, because it was dirt cheap. And I met a few members of this board (Noel Evans, Kaku Ito and more).
My time in Japan changed my future plans alot. I don't wanna work in a big company as an electrical engineer, I somehow wanna work filmrelated. I wanna shoot my own films, music videos etc. You gonna have dreams, right? :D
I am not completely of the track with my dreams though. Media engineering is also film and television related. We've got a complete television studio in my university and I learned about lighting, cameras, sound and studioproductions and so on.

I would say it's not your "normal" entry. More into the abstract direction, or like some call it: Artsy Fartsy :D But I hope it is still interesting and fun to watch.
Learned a lot, made alot of mistakes but in the end I am happy with my film. I hope the effort I put into the sound design makes up for some visual flaws I've got.
Really looking forward to all the other entries. Good to see that we've got so many new faces this time around and also so many international productions :)

I truly love the diversity of this place and I must admit that Shawn and Ken's entry has really resonated with me. I mean, how can you not be pumped over a couple guys with TWO Red One's in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the U.S. making a friggin' medieval period film!!! Can't wait to see what ends up on the screen.
And I am just as enthused over the totally new filmmakers who have found the site and have gotten the cohones to make a damn film. These are halycon days, indeed, with affordable 24P cameras and worldwide exposure via the internet.

My name is Dustin Rogan, born and raised in Texas the best country...I mean state ever. Been in Waco more than 15 years now. I don't talk about it much, but I was the pool boy for the Branch Davidian compound in 1993. I had no interest in their theology and was just looking for some quick cash. Fortunately, when the Feds rolled up I was playing hookey with a 16-year old nymph who persistently bummed cigarettes off of me when David Koresh wasn't looking. We heard the gunfire and lit out for the Tastee-Freeze. The rest, as they say, is history. We've been running this bait shop now for the past 8 years. Other than the constant stench, life is pretty damn good.

Hey all, Jim Montgomery
Worked at a manufacturing business for 38 years, sold that and went fishing. Racked up a few major tournament wins which led to a fishing show on the Sportsman Channel. Complete and utter disaster. Didn't have the time, energy, or moxie to find sponsors.
Well I had all this equipment and needed something to do with it and myself, so here I am.
Thanks all for whatever I have gleaned from this site, and good luck.
Jim one of the actors on my last short film wants to teach me how to bass fish. Most of my fishing was sitting on the river bank drinking beer not caring if I caught a fish.
So I take it your not making a fishing film!!

Greetings to all.
Red Shoes is our first film. "We" are Susanne, who wrote and directed it, and me, Jason. I did the photography and am battling through the editing (just about there!!). Susanne is German and an architect, I am English and a photographer and art director. We were both living in Italy, where we met, and then moved together to Berlin, Germany, where we now live, a little over two years ago. We will be getting married next month in England.
This forum is indeed a great place to learn and has a very friendly atmosphere. I started lurking here before Christmas, one of many places on the internet I was visiting as part of the learning process. I downloaded all the Lovefest films and was astounded by the high quality of many of them. The learning process went ahead and, by the time Timefest came along, it seemed to be time to take the plunge, so here we are.
I'm looking forward to watching the films and hopefully finding time to make some useful comments.
Good luck to all

Me and Mike Pedro (Hordeprime) just got done at 12:00 am last night for our first entry! We've worked with Will and Wild Imagination films for past entries but this is our first.
We've got some good stuff but we're looking for some critical feedback , which I am sure we'll get here. We've definitely decided that we need a dedicated focus puller for a next short, and lighting guy.
Looking forward to seeing everyone's work on this one!

This will be my first entry. Ive been a member here for over two years now, but didnt know enough to contribute much until recently. My film was going to be my first using my hv20 with a 35mm adapter, but I still dont have everything to make that work just yet. Im actually filming my film inbetween filming my very first movie. Im DP for a no-budget independent film here in SC titled 1978. Im learning a lot along the way--hopefully stuff I can use to shoot my first short later this summer.
Anyway, I ended up scrapping my initial idea and writing a new one yesterday. It will be much more fun and entertaining anyway. Keep an eye out for the Future Rangers.
So glad to see so many "first timers". This fest will be my sophomore effort, so to speak. I got such great support and feedback last year with my first fest entry. You can't go wrong entering a DVXUser fest. Even if your film doesn't turn out as you hoped, you learn something in the making and the sharing that you wouldn't get otherwise.
Looking forward to another great fest! :)

Hello everyone, we're not first time filmmakers, as we've posted some past work, but we haven't posted in a while, and we love the idea of timefest, so we are going to be first time entrants, and i'm setting up a thread now. This was an amazing idea for a DVXfest.
I am a first time entry, but not a first time filmmaker. Is a year and half that i brought my canon XL2 and i have done a number of things (commercials, weddings, live events).
Counting only "fiction" things, i have done 4 shorts beetween january and semptember 2007 as a camera operator/cinematogapher (each is at least 15 min. long). I have shot/directed/edited 2 shorts (one is 13 min, the other is 4 min) for a local education company and edited 2 other shorts for another company (editing is'nt really my job); i am the camera operator for a medium-sized feature (is'nt really a short, 'cause it will be nearly 40 min long) that is currently in the final editing stage, and another short is currently in the shooting stage.
I just wrapped a 3 day of shooting for an acting class final year short, shot with my XL2 as A-camera and another HVX200 as a B-camera (but in SD, not HD)
5.00 is my first Dvxfest entry; and the first one i did for myself and not for someone else.

That's awesome a musical! There are so many great films being entered this fest I've only been here for 3 fests but I think this is going to be the best!

It's about TIME I got off my a$$ and did this festival. My first entry....
The Enchanted Notes of a Puppy-Love Piano
I still haven't gone to bed since Sat.
This is not my first film, but it was the first time shooting with a DOF adapter, lots of lights, a crane, a small crew, an anamorphic workflow, and a very ambitious project for the TIME that I had given myself. Needless to say, the project suffered as a result, but I learned a LOT this and will know better in the future.
I can't wait to see the other entries!
Edit: I just realized that the version I sent up in my tiredness is only mostly 2.35 aspect, sometimes it jumps out to 16:9, most annoying ....ooppps

This is my first film ever. I worked with my daughter and her school mates, and we had tons of fun doing it. I have no doubt my film is not any where near pro quality, im just glad we got it done, even with all the errors and bad acting.

I entered the film "Escape from the Past". It is my first entry into any DVXuser fest and I am looking foward to hearing some critiques on it.

Hi everyone, let me start by saying that DVXUser is the BEST. It is refreshing to see a community that actually behaves, well like a community. The advice and support are incredible, as I grow as an artist I hope that I will be able to make useful contributions to the community. Great job everyone.

This is also my/(& my team's) first DVXuser fest.
Our film is called WELLSDAY.
We've been doing a bunch of 48-hour fests (locally, here in Hawaii).....and we kind of treated it the same way......despite having MONTHS.
Oh well, it was fun. I am looking forward to the next fest and using much more of the alloted TIME!

My name is Garnet Campbell, I live in Vancouver BC. I've always come to dvxuser.com for advice on gear and shooting tips and have really enjoyed watching the films from the other filmfests.
I love telling stories and have helped produce two short documentaries:
Journey of Healing - A story of residential school survivors here in Canada.
Through the Gates of Hell - A story about Central Americas largest prison break that took place in Guatemala.
I like to write and have finished a feature length screenplay called " A Man Called Thursday " – based on a book by G.K. CHESTERTON
Metaphysical Spy Thriller set in Lebanon UK and France
I'm really excited to be helping a friend produce his first time feature length horror film called "They Came From the Attic" (http://theycamefromtheattic.com) which should be completed by September 08.
This is my second short film but the first submission to DVXUSER. These competitions are so inspiring cause it gets us to stop TALKING about making films and actually DO IT. The deadline helps to motivate you to action and not keep putting things off.
At the end of the day I love this stuff and its great hanging out with other people who love it too, even if its only online this is a great meeting place.
THREE PM
My wife is pregnant with our third child and ready to give birth any day now. A month ago she was talking about a woman who was doing a documentary on child birth and actually ended up having her baby in a taxi. We laughed about that and then started making jokes about what other crazy things might happen to make the situation even worse. "THREE pm" was the result of that conversation.
We were a bit late getting into production as we shot it on June 11th and 12th but I'm glad decided to go for it. Its been fun and we made some new friends.

Yes this is my first film to. I wrote and directed. It was a ton of fun, and couldn't have asked for a better crew and cast. This has been a great experience so far. Thanks alot everyone for your comments and support. :)
