You don't necessarily have to throw the flames at another person. They can be and are used for good, like to start controlled burns and to light the candles on a birthday cake (incidentally cooking it at the same time: 2 for the price of one, essentially)

The flamethrower saved MANY lives both on Iwo Jima AND at Normandy.
