So I got a job taking Night Club photographs and I hate using flashes (probably cuz I don't know how to use them very well) but I kinda liked these. By the way I recomend that job if you happen to be single, you get a lot of attention.

and there's also my business card design (1st attempt) and some random photographs what do you think?

i shoot clubs a lot, i really recommend flashes if you can figure em out, they change everything. There are just too many missed opportunities or guessing or raising that ISO to a level you probably should avoid.

I don't wanna hijak your thread but here's just a few photo sets from some club events i've taken:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sentrosi/sets/72157603004839483/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sentrosi/sets/72157603004899437/

flash was used for all of em, usually one flash off camera wirelessly triggered and a second on a bracket.

lets me control the atmosphere more than available light. If you do want to go available light then go buy a good 1.4 lens and maybe a D300 so you can use high ISOs.

I like the buisness card but maybe choose one font instead of a different one on the front and back?

And ya, hot girls are great fun to photograph.

Omar,

I agree with Brad about the font choice - a single font would be better to connect the front and back sides. Personally, I like the front font the best.

I also agree about using flash. It helps to isolate the subject.

The downside of flash can be harshness. I use a Gary Fong diffuser on my Nikon D70: http://store.garyfonginc.com/licl.html. Gary is a little strong on the marketing hype, but he makes a great product. I use it all the time on my Nikon flash (SB800). It's excellent in most situations, but it's made for portraits.

If I were doing available light stuff, I'd get one of the higher-end Canon cameras or a Nikon D3. These are VERY expensive, but their low-light performance is excellent. The D300 is also very good.

For flash work, the best choice (IMO) is the Nikon flash system. My SB800 is simply incredible and pretty much idiot-proof. (Even I can take good pics. :D ) While it has lots of flexibility in its manual modes, it works seamlessly and pretty much automatically with all current Nikon DSLRs. I'd love to upgrade my D70 to a D3 or D300, but I can't imagine upgrading my flash. (Yes, it's that good.)

Good luck with the biz.

Dan.

Wow! saw your Flickr page those are great you gotta tell me how you did those what lense and camera and everything. I'm jelouse.

For nikon there are a few options in the 1.4 range.

Depending on the camera you're using. If you are shooting with a D40 you are limited to AFS (HSM sigma) lenses. If that was the case then i think the sigma 30mm 1.4 is the only current option? Though i've heard mixed reviews, i think it depends on the copy you get.

A better option if you shoot with a D70,80,200,300 etc...is the Nikon 50 1.4

Fairly affordable and great for those low-light situations. I would say pony up the money for the 1.4 vs. the 1.8 unless you're really on a tight budget.

A great little lens, as for other options you also have the 85mm 1.4 but it is PRICEY!

and for club photography it honestly probably isn't wide enough. Even the 50mm is a little long for my tastes but definitely useable.

As for my photographs on flickr the club stuff as i mentioned is all shot with a dual flash system. I will usually set up a flash on manual at about 1/4 or 1/2 power (so i can get decent recycle times) either behind or to the side of the subject and then use the flash on the bracket attached to my camera at about 1/4 1/8 power. I also usually shoot at ISO 400 to allow me to still get ambient light into the photo and then i usually use a 1/25 or 1/30 of a second shutter speed. The flash will freeze movement, the slower shutter and higher ISO will allow ambient light in.

You're in a club so its totally acceptable to get a little abstract.

ex: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sentrosi/756867723/in/set-72157603004866233/

as i say in the description i simply held the second flash on a monopod above the crowd to get more evenly lit areas. The club lights (strobes) freeze the subject as well as my flashes freezing them so it gives the whole place a crazy feel.

There is a degree of luck to this though, sometimes you get lucky: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sentrosi/756916787/in/set-72157603004866233/

Other times, its just a big mess. Thats the beauty of digital.

Definitely read up on www.strobist.blogspot.com (http://www.strobist.blogspot.com) check out Lighting 101 and Lighting 102.

Oh and the Camera i use is a the D200 with wireless flash triggers i bought off ebay (looking to upgrade to Radio Poppers) and SB-26 (flashes)

the lens i use the most is my Tokina 16-50 f2.8 as well as my Tamron 90mm f2.5 macro and my old Nikon AI (manual focus) 50mm f1.4

feel free to ask anymore questions :)

Omar,

The SB800 actually has three little diffuser gadgets. I tried the little flip down one and think it's pretty mediocre. The bigger one that fits completely over the end is OK, but not great. The final one is the little bounce card that pulls out with the flip-down diffuser. I've gotten some very good shots with that. However...

Gary Fong's diffuser is WAY, WAY better. I probably use it for something like 99% of my indoor shots! Yes, it's that good.

One thing, though... I have the original. It slides on the SB800 and holds by friction. The problem with it is that it can fall off. The new one is supposed to have much better mount that locks on to the front of the SB800. Before buying you should contact him to make sure you get the right one.

Regards,

Dan.

Clubs are very hard to shoot at--so many considerations other then technical.

Your shots are very good

I use either a 3 monolight setup or I use a 1.4 with no flash.

A low light shot just for fun no flash:

Hey, new here--somebody needed some models for a film contest on this site and I just happened to stumble on this thread.
