Session on JAM?...R.U.....Gonna? would love to laugh at the creative process...Roast....John Abbot)....put him in his place)....and He might not......COME BACK TO CUT OUT YOUR TOUNG!.........
here's a preview:
SPEsliker (08:38:03 PM): JAM is a creepy man.
SPEsliker (08:38:15 PM): He stole the souls of my children with just one stare. And I don't even have kids.
HappyGobo (08:38:25 PM): Well ... not anymore you don't.

Are you talkin' to me? There was no bot. :embarasse
I just made up a fake chat session with a pretty AIM call girl.
You know, if you think about it, there SHOULD be a sexy girl IM bot... Have some ad banners that would rotate or something and make a killing... and if the bot was really good, the servers would shut down from too much traffic... that would be great...

I really enjoyed this.
I think you have a wonderful command of film language and did a great job.
One thing kept bugging me though, it was most prominent during the murder dream sequence. The image kept going crystal sharp like video cameras do. You didn't replicate the softer cinematic look of the previous photography. I thought it was a stylistic choice that I simply didn't agree with until the very end. When the door opens again it becomes crystal clear focused at the door jam opening.
I wasn't terribly thrilled with Davis' performance. There were moments where he was allowed to indicate and that took me out of it for a brief second at a time here and there. I also was expecting him to be dirty or sweatier having been beating/torturing his victim. But again terribly minor nitpick there.
Finally if I had my druthers I would have liked to have seen the pile of cigarette butts in the end scene with the boy on the bench and the day dream. It's a wonderful hook and I really liked the imagery of it given your use of boot shots.
All in all a great effort. Thank you for making this.

Chuklz,
thank you for your view on my performance. as i am always looking to improve and grow in this art. I would be most greatful if you might elaberate and clarify more on "was allowed to indicate". many Thanks, a student of life, who hopes to always be learning). Davis

Chuklz,
I am also interested in what that means. I sent you a PM but feel free to reply here as well.
I'm glad you enjoyed our film, i understand your focus issue, the door jamb shot is merely a victim of the medium, the HVX. there simply wasn't enough space in the area to pull it back and zoom in for greater DOF. And I really like the cigarette butt idea, i might implement that for the longer cut as a transition.
Thanks for the view and review! :dankk2:

Indicating is acting out the mannerisms of anger, grief, or happiness etc without the energy of that emotion. You see it alot with method actors who are both tired and acting with a green screen or a stand in. Sometimes they just don't have what they need to feed their performance so they fake it, and it looks good in the moment, but is lacking in the final cut. Sometimes it appears that way due to the cut.
For example if you watch the Red Band trailer for Wanted, Morgan Freeman delivers the line 'Kill this mutherfocker'. It's been taken out of context, and it appears to be indicating. But when you watch the scene in it's entirety it carries the appropriate emotional weight.
On the scale of I think you can do no better than this and pulling something to critique out of my ass, you're damn close to perfect. This is just an impression from a single viewing. I could be way off. So I don't mean to offend.
I think your character and story has legs, and you could pull off a feature with the talent you guys are displaying that would sell very easily at AFM when horror gets hot again.

No offense, just wanted a little clarification! Where did you pick up that term? Based on the dictionary definition of "indicate", I guess it relates, none of us had never heard it before!
That first sentence means alot, especially as we evolve as filmmakers, we have to deal with and perfect all the little things that would take our film from great to blow your mind awesome. These sort of criticisms and ideas go a long way to bridging those two.
Thanks again for the review!

Ben, I’m starting to think you’ve got a warped mind and phenomenal actor. Together, you guys will do some damage in the film world. I’d love to use him as one of my characters one of these days. Just have to write him a part.
The story itself was engaging and I think you pulled off a decent little film. The end was super cool. I just wish I could have seen her just a little bit more on her way home. It was all the sudden if you know what I mean.
The dude is creepy. Such a good find.
The score. Herman, not bad. I think the piano works and doesn’t at the same time. It sets the tone of the character and his demented thoughts but not much layers after that. I enjoyed it, don’t get me wrong.. If anything, maybe at the end had something other than piano? Perhaps the sudden credit roll made that awkward?
Speaking of The end credits.. VERY cool spot to put them, but man, you put them in wwaaaay too soon. I would have let that scene play out a bit more as we continued to watch her go through the kitchen nd continue to put up the groceries. She’s so vulnerable and all you want to do is scream, “Get the f out of there!” That would have made this movie and would have stuck in your head like a sore thumb. I know I would have been creeped out by that last shot. Cutting it out looses you.
Congrats and cheers for entering the fest.

Thanks Justin!
Yeah, the end was one thing where we were like "damn shoulda kept rolling", but, of course, none of us thought that on set. In the edit, I was like "wouldn't it be bad ass if this shot was long enough so that I could actually scroll the credits in that little spot?" But we only had a couple seconds of roll on any one of them we shot! Maybe I should give a couple minutes of thought into my end credits next time.
Maybe Herman will chime in about the score, a lot of it was based on what we did in the first film, i know there was "keep with the piano, it's badass" in my notes.
I swear! I don't need therapy! I have a perfectly normal mind!

Sounds like a matter of taste to me, and for me, there's no arguing about taste. However...
********POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD********
I thought the piano did bring that emotional depth, and that by keeping it simple, the score would both deny his insanity, as well as confirming it at the same time, maybe confusing the viewer for a moment that his intentions with the girl are sincere. Where in 'In Pieces' I focused solely on the music (apart from a few FX), here I also did sound design, and I was just as interested in achieving depth through sound design and composition with electronic sounds.
In my opinion, an orchestral score might've been too bombastic and overwhelming to get into the mind of JAM.

I love Davis Osborne. The problem for me was, he's too good. He dwarfs the rest of the film. When you start off with him on a bench that looks that cool...
It just feels like every other character and every other location miss the mark for me. And I'm not saying they were bad necessarily -in any other short they would be fine, but it's like half of the movie is amazing and, comparatively, the other half is just good. Your best links can only carry the chain so far. Brilliant work otherwise.
Well done, good short, didn't quite understand the bit after the beginning, but then I got into the film again and thought the main acting was brill, nice one.
Thank you.

06-28-2008, 03:55 PM
Thanks for the continued viewings!!!
majikfraug, i guess the only way that I can reply is that we did alot to focus everyone's attention in on him, because in the end, that's who the story is about. It's not about his victims or the environment around him, but his mind, his feelings and actions. And because of this, I simply just don't know whether we left our audience wanting more from the other characters or not. In the last film, we were able to literally eliminate any other influence, your attention was solely on John. We did the same thing this time, but it's just not as obvious or subjective.
Basically I thought if I gave the ancillary characters in this film too much, well, character, that it would feel rushed and confused. In the way that we did film it, I'm not surprised that you felt he overpowered the rest of the film.
You all are killing me tho! Just when I think I've got the dynamic of this character down, someone throws a wrench in the machine with some new perspective! Thanks again!

Hey Ben, solid film here. Is this kind of the prequel to IN PIECES, starring the same actor? Davis is solid (think I've chatted with him on MySpace), and plays one heck of a psycho ... would LOVE to see him break what's becoming a type cast that I've seen (the only two roles/films I've seen him in), and see how different he could be. That said, a pleasure to watch him.
Overall it's an interesting film, and held my attention. The music was spot on, and the SFX worked really well also, though I think there could have been a little more pop with the bat in the torture section ... but that's just me, not to mention nit picking.
The OMG moment for me, visually, was the reveal of him in the house at the end. WOW that looked awesome, not to mention well timed and everything to boot!
Great job, and a high ranking film, in my opinion. :)

It's all about that last image...
Very good piece, mood, atmospheric and really nice cinematography. The one scene that actually didn't work too well for me was the torture scene -- not that I have anything against that kind of violence, but I just felt it was overproduced. TOO polished, TOO clean.... didn't work for me.
OTHERWISE, really nice work. I'm really looking forward to more from you!!

Unfortunately, I'm certain I won't be able to make it to LA for the screening. (Something about probably losing my job, then in turn my GF, then my house cause I'd be poor :(). Plus I JUST took a short vacation out to VA Beach.
I hope for next fest we can get these kind of details a little earlier. 8 days is a little rough! Cause even if I didn't enter the fest, I'd still be interested in attending a screening like this.
Thanks everybody for your support of our little serial killer movies! John has come a long way since bradley and I jotted down "Shot. Beat. Strangled. Shot. Bludgeoned. Impaled. Stabbed. Decapitated and Decapitated." on a piece of paper when All Hallows Fest was announced.

Ok, first off, this film looked beautiful. Of course, I expected as much after your last entry. Mr. Osborne, you are too damn cool. I absolutely love actors who can act with their eyes and their face, if you know what I mean. Just terrific.
The only thing that doesn't work for me is the VO. Especially during the opening sequence with the gal on the bench. Davis is just brilliant, the awkwardness of the whole thing that happens when the woman sits down, the whole domestic quarrel... I feel the VO TELLS when you are already SHOWING SO MUCH. I watched it again with the sound turned off: absolutely fucking brilliant. And it makes Davis's character so much more terrifying because we then we don't hear what's going on in his head.
Ditto on the final shot. Again, fantastic.
Anyway, just my thoughts. A great film, nevertheless. Congrats! Definitely in my own top 8!
Cheers!
Ben Sliker
07-11-2008, 01:05 PM
John,
I definitely considered going with less VO in the beginning. Or even none at all. I would say the VO that is in JAM was tailored to actually make us qualify as a Timefest movie.
I personally could watch Davis and his creepy looks all day (and during editing ... i have), but there were also concerns about it getting a little stale for a larger audience.
I mean ... seriously ... every time i think i've got this thing down for a director's cut ... someone goes and blows my mind with an entirely different idea about the cut. Now that I don't have timefest restrictions anymore ... I'll seriously consider taking it out.
Thanks for the watch and the review! STOP BLOWING MY MIND. :zombie_smiley: :)

Hey Ben,
Not sure if this has been brought up or not, but would you (or are you) considering making a feature based on Mitchell?
Ben Sliker
07-11-2008, 01:19 PM
Tommy,
Congrats ... you are the 124th person to suggest a feature based on JAM. You win the foil gum wrapper and blue-white-ish lint that is in my back pocket! (just give me your address and it's all yours). [/sarcasm] :)
We are very humbled by everyone's suggestions that this character deserves a feature based upon him. It's been in consideration ever since we finished In Pieces, but nothing has come to fruition. I've been missing "the hook" to the movie for quite some time. As Kholi has told me, we've got a great angle, a serial killer movie told through the eyes of a serial killer instead of the cop that is following him, and I can come up with all sorts of ways for people to die, but the "WHY" of it all has alluded me for about 9 months now. In the shorts, it's John's search for a "perfect kill" ... which is neat for 5-6 minutes, but I don't think it has the strength for 90+.
Once I figure out the why, I'll start writing all over (I think i've written about 200 pages of JAM feature that I've scrapped cause it was CRAP.)

UPDATE!
I'm very pleased to announced that "IN PIECES", the first short film starring John Abbott Mitchell has been accepted into the Action On Film Festival. We screen in the 6 PM block on Thursday, July 31st at the Laemmle Theater.
Since they are still updating the AOF site, I've yet to find out if we are nominated for anything, but that would be pretty cool as well! *crosses fingers*
I'd like to thank everyone involved in that piece (production team, you guys ROCK) especially Davis Osborne, for it is his chilling performance that can be directly attributed to the success of that project.

It's cool that you've got a draft written already (even if you did scrap it).
I agree it's tough to write a feature based on a serial killer. Hope you can come up with something.
Tommy,
Congrats ... you are the 124th person to suggest a feature based on JAM.

Congrats! I'll see you at your showing!

Just wanted you guys to know I really enjoyed your movie. Rated very high on my list, not sure why it got jacked in the end. Davis has that look and persona I can use in a project I am working on. Perhaps at some point....

JAM now tips the scales at a hefty 7:05. Off to herman to do his magic on a new cut.

You going to find a way to weave John Abbott Mitchell's story into TwilightFest?
Ben Sliker
07-20-2008, 08:08 PM
lol Blaine.
Actually, Davis and I had a long phone conversation about the character to brainstorm ideas for a possible feature, and he sparked my brain and I came up with an idea for John that would work in TwilightFest. But, I think I'll put John in the back pocket for right now (still continue to write for him tho).
I wouldn't be surprised if you saw something completely different from this team next fest. :)

so i was browsing around and saw this short...and was blown away. 10 out of 10. Davis iz amazing in this role. Carrianne was really good also.
I watched Davis's Demo reel and its really kool...but it seems he plays alot fo dark roles and does it very well, But i wouldn't want him to be typecast. So i'd luv to see him in a different role. Anyhoo..great film guys!!
