View Full Version : 1st time shooting people
Two weeks ago i had my first try at shooting people with artificial light. I had 4 girls who were just awesome in their way of cooperating with me.
Below you find the first three pics that I post-processed. More will follow. Hope you like them and I would love to get some feedback. :)

My turn to envy your models Phillip! First and last are my favourites. The model in the first picture on the right, seems so natural - love her pose. The other one is too, but the right one catches my eye.
I like the lighting in the last image as well. Good job!
-Kegan
Thanks Kegan. :)
The one in the first pic is just your type, isnīt she?

I dig the composition in all three. Not a big fan of the post work, but I like the direction and think these are pretty cool overall. Nice work.
Thanks for commenting alveraz. :)
The post... :D Iīm always testing.
I think I will follow the principle of #3 on the others.

First thing I thought, poor people. Why, because I thpught that I was reading a post in the cafe and when I read the title, you can imagine.
then when I realised I was in the photo forum.... they are very stylish, I like them.

Hey <pt> are you gonna sell that crack? ^
Being more serious, the third one was my fav and looks like it could be in a magazine.

The third pic is the bees knees. I'd like to see the first two without the selective color. And I'd like to see more crack here on DVXUser. Preferably from the ladies.

Thanks but no I wonīt give you the first two without the selective color. :D
Iīm not quite sure what you guys mean with "crack"?!

Hey pt, wish you would have shown this one first. It's the strongest one of the bunch! Great composition, life, light and texture. I'm even partial to the post work here. It's as if the dark, brooding qualities are in conflict with life. Even the bar shadows give the subtle presence of an enclosure. It's like a ballerina dancing in a prison cell. I dig.
My only very minor problem is your name placement. Feels imposed and is also distracting to the eye. Don't be clever, put it in the bottom corner, and smaller, imho. Bravo!

Agreed. And fix your horizontals!
Third one above is real nice, but the lighting on her face is very harsh and unflattering. Obviously you were battling the sun but a bit of screen would do wonders here. Or a big softbox in close on the shadow side.
Wow, thanks alveraz. I just thought it looked quite atmosperic. Thanks for the story behind it. :D
The name placement... I will work on that and -dougspice- of course on the lighting, too.

I like this one too. It's got a nice feel to it. Is she a dancer? I only ask because over the past few months, I did a lot of dance stuff and it just looked similar.

Last one is my fav just amazing work there! Could you explain some of the post work?
Kegan, yes indeed, sheīs a dancer.
triplej96, duplicate the background layer, put a b/w adjustment layer between them and put the blend mode from the layer on top on "soft light". thatīs a nice effect.

Thanks for the tip I used that yesterday actually the "hollywood" effect as they call it. It just looks really nice with your photos. Like I said before I just love that last one!

Why did you use artificial light if it was sunny outside? They are great shots, 1st and 3rd are my favorite, but what is the reason of the artificial light? Could you have just bounced the sunlight with a silkscreen? If your reason is good then I might try this myself, because obviously your results are stunning, what kind of camera did you use also?
I donīt know how exactly it would have come out with bounced light. Sure, for simply putting light on the face bouncing would be enough. But if you want it to be more dramatic with light from the back (maybe towards the cam) artificial light is unavoidable I think.
My cam is the 400D and I used the kit-lens.

Great looking shots. I love the one with the dancer--Lots of energy and really catches the eye. Would you mind sharing what kind of model/brand lights you're using? what about power sources? battery/building's ac/generator?
Oh well, just rented the stuff without really knowing. Those lights were from profoto and I had rechargeable batteries. Thatīs it, nothing special about it really.^^

I third that!
Thanks a lot guys. :)
Setup: One light from the left, one light from the right. :cheesy:
Like I said, it was my first time so I was just experimentating with light and didnīt have a real plan. You are able to achieve just the same stuff, Iīm sure.

Nice stills.
Sorry to ask this again, but I couldn't find a specific model (also frustrated with this strange Mac I'm using to browse)... what model lights were you using and how did you power them? I'm just getting into this so artifical light is something new to me.
Really great stuff, though. You've set the bar pretty high.
