Story by Andrea Ferraguti,

Directed by Andrea Ferraguti and Michele Coser (Mik-myself)

Cinematography by Michele Coser

Paolo Menoni - Randall (or the unnamed character)

Andrea Ferraguti - Milanese (or the work boss) (and a couple of pedestrians)

William Cocconcelli - Boss co-worker

Diego Gaudenzi - Thief and grip

Stefano Terenziani - Undecided pedestrian (and another unreconignizable character) - backstage and grip

Shooting will start today, and ends tomorrow... hopefully we shot everything in time. We are really tight 'cause i'm away for a work by the 1st of june; and 'cause there are two local festival that need a subscription by the end of may (the screening however is months away...)
So our personal deadline is 30 may.

Welcome to the fest! Hope nothing big happens :)

Well... the weather was an hell...

Anyway; shooting is ended. I might need a couple of additional shots, but i need a first cut before.

DAY 1

Office interior.

This was easy enough. A quiet scene, all dialogs. We shot inside a car dealer office, and the owners were hice enough allowing us to use an unused cubicle.
It was also the first time for the actors togheter (they met a few minutes before)
But this was the easiest part

DAY 2

Office stairs.

Shooting start at 9.30 am

The car dealer building was only one-floor so it has no stairs. Searching for a stair with a space big enough was'nt easy (with so little time of pre-prod); because we have a scene with paper sheets falling down through the well-hole.
The style of the one we found is'nt really the same style of the office... but for a matter of second... who cares...

Exteriors.

Man... the weather was so unstable... a moment you got a cloudy sky and ten second later your scene is messed up by the sun coming out!
We got rain for an hour, but we spent this time for reviewing what we did and for lunch.
Andrea, the story writer and the Work Boss, got one really nice idea of the central short scene. Is not very long but it was a nice little challenge in terms of timing and framing. People passing in the street was asking what we were doing... I'm curious to see what you think about it when you see it.

I overcome myself three or four times when i was shooting a very Bourne style running scene (handheld and high shutter speed); i was side to side with a football player.... he was suprised by seeing me just a meter behind him (he weight at least 20 kg less than me); the downside is that now my left knee is crying! And too bad the backstage guy din't catch this, because noone was expecting.

Shooting ended at 7.00 am with everyone exaust, especially Paolo that runned through the city for a lot!

Benvenuti a TimeFest. FatMonster ti invia una birra.

Thanx :)

My only "gnawings" is that i wanted to shoot a scene with my steadicam circling around the main character; but when i saw the grey overcast sky i leaved the rig at home. Later, a delay and revision of the script forced us to change the location of the central scene (wich i planned to end with the circling steadicam shot). But in the end i think is good enough as it is.

Yesterday we got our internal screening; everyone is pleased and surprised of how it has come out. Looking back at my previous works i must say that this is really the best thing i have done.

I find this to be true for me, actually every project I do I think is the best- because there is always something I have never done before that works out and I'm proud of it. I think as a film maker- or artist of any kind each work you do should be better then the last one... (of corse we all get some bombs).

Ciao Mik,

I am very happy to see that there is somebody from Italy, where I lived for five years, in TimeFest. I like the atmosphere of your grap in the city of Parma and also I am very amused about the foto of "Berlusca"!!!

I wish you lots of luck for the competition.

Hi Mik,

I understand perfectly your ironic joke about Berlusconi. But no matter - I don't think that it will be an inspiration for a new law. He loves himself so much, that he likes to see himself everywhere and takes it like an other public relation.
Furtunatly there are still italian like you in italy.

Cool, appears to get to be your first review.

I liked the look of this short a lot and the cinematography of him biking/running through the city was very cool to watch. That said, it did start to drag as him running was the bulk of the short and I didn't really have a good reason to care if he made it back in time. My understanding was, he needed to run an errand in 5 minutes. Why was it important? Or why was the job so important that it was worth losing his bike over?

If you would've spent a little more time in the setup I think I would've been much more involved in hoping that he made it back on time.

I do like the end though of him getting back just in time to get sent on another errand.

Nice work overall and I'd like to see your work in the future.

Brad S.
06-19-2008, 02:56 PM
I liked the short. I really liked the shaky camera scenes of him running; it felt like an action film and it increased the agitation. I agree with Gohanto that more setup into why this character really needed this job would have helped.

Since I am a sound guy, I think some more sound cues could have helped to sell that this character is really pushing himself. Things like a lot of heavy breathing, especially during the closeups, would have given us a closer connection to the character. Also I would have liked to hear more of the city background sounds mixed in with the music. The music was cool. It sort of reminded me of the first "Bourne Identity" film, though that could have been the "chase" through European streets.

Good job!

Are people in Italy that rude? :)

Actually Andrea (the work-boss) wrote the first draft of the script and it was even more rude... i tuned down a bit 'cause it was unnecessary.
Note that also there are a few sentences that might sound rude in english but in italian are more "friendly", like the end of the guy in the car.

@Brad: you're right, i need to spend more time on the sound. Actually i ADR a bit -especially the running scenes since there was my footsteps and my breathing- we got some ot problems with the external mic and i captured everything (office dialog included) with the camera mic, it turned out not bad at all.
My brother said the same thing about being Bourne-like; and i admit it was a test for me to see if i can do something similar.

Also thought it started to drag on a bit because of the long running scene and that's too bad cause that scene is one of the selling points. Shots of those beautiful italian atmosphere always work :D

SPOILERS BELOW

Si, si, si - bellissimo!

MIK, Susanne and I will comment on the other films separately but, having both lived in Italy, we have decided to make this a joint critique. So:

A great short, a lovely little piece of political satire.
The photo of Berlusconi was perfect and central to the piece. You really managed to capture the atmosphere of present day Italy and the work situation. The character and arrogance of the boss were perfect, the dialogues right on the mark. Lots of lovely little details too - the sheets of paper in the stairwell, the old lady's surprised look on the street, etc. We liked the way the running scenes were filmed - the camera movement seemed to evoke the precarious situation of the main character.

That said, a small criticism:
It seems that not everyone understands fully the film, so maybe it's a little too much for Italian "insiders"?. Since workplace precarity and short-term contracts are a tendency everywhere (although maybe more so in Italy), you maybe have to ask yourself why? Perhaps you did need a little more setup so that the audience understands the problem at the beginning? Or perhaps you needed to lay it on a little thicker in the final scene, making it clearer that he is being offered a five-minute work contract (contratto a termine di 5 minuti - bellissimo)?

Well done, we really enjoyed it. We will send the link to Italian friends who will, we are sure, also love it!

Jason and Susanne

P.S. Your subtitles weren't wonderful. If you need some help with the translation next time, let me know.

I alora il italiani! Bravissimo!

Great film. Had a bit of a Don Corleone from GF II touch to it when they start talking in the beginning :) The guy who is hiring delivers pretty well, I thought.

I have to admit that when I watched it, I was at a bit of a loss concerning the whole contract issue. Thanks to Horncastle I believe that I understand it now and it is quite funny. You definitely had a problem with the subtitles. I'd suggest getting someone who speaks (writes) the language well to help you with those since it comes off as very unprofessional when there are misspellings and grammatical errors. Good job, thanks for sharing.

Good job! I think your film looked great, very cinematic. Although I too love the Bourne films, and you did a good job emulating the frenetic cine-verite look, perhaps the action went on a little too long. Also, during his mad dash, you might consider intercutting various shots of clocks (his wrist watch, clocks on old buildings, a digital clock in a bank window, etc.) to show time running out, and increase the tension...

Look forward to more films from you.

Really enjoyed this one. Agree with the subtitles issue, and like the suggestion above to show various clocks around the city as he runs.

SPOILERS BELOW

I kinda had a feeling there was going to be a gag twist at the end.

Loved the shot of the paper falling down the stairwell. Crisp and well lit. The little dance with the man trying to get out of the way felt over-choreographed. Maybe lose half of that to get a more spontaneous feeling.

Do you not know any female actors? All men in this one, even the peripheral characters. Did I miss one?

Nice job!

Alex

mik
06-21-2008, 02:10 AM
The boss co-worker initially was a female character, in fact it was his secretary
-and she was going to say more lines- but a few days before the shooting she was sick and we replaced with the guy.

SPOILERS BELOW

The central bycicle scene originally started with a shot of the main church clock, than with a pan down toward the guy arriving with the bycicle... But we missed the right time to be there (11:57) and skipped the clock thing.
But i think that the clock thing is a matter of personal feeling an i feel that did'nt needed more.

Just to comment on this possibly being too much of an "inside joke", I know nothing of the work climate in Italy, but loved this short. It was the first I watched and set a great tone. Actually it's been hard for subsequent films to live up to the bar set by your short.

I think the "inside joke" is just a bonus for those that are familiar with the area and the situation. While I dont know anything of the situation behind it, it is not hard to follow what has happened. Great short and fantastic job with the action in the streets.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

(and so there is no misunderstanding, I dont literally mean JOKE in "inside joke".) :)

The scene where the main character almost runs over the pedestrian with a bicycle was very funny to me. It was shot in such a way that it looked like the main character was TRYING to wipe the other guy out and that just made me laugh for some reason.

I enjoyed the shoot. As previously stated by others, I enjoyed it more after I read the comments and was clued into the Italian working angle. You use of fast shutter worked very well for you.

Congratulations. I always enjoy seeing the films from across the ocean.

Alex, you're right, I hadn't noticed that. My first thought was that MIK had flipped it for continuity reasons (i.e. keeping him always going in one direction on the screen while he goes for the coffee and in the other on the return journey, which might actually have been nice), but it doesn't seem to be that.

I take those two comments as example of how you like or dislike the same thing.
I personally like how the running scene came out; and is almost like i had in mind before shooting it; exept the 12 sec. sequence (yes, the reversed one... it was to keep the right direction on the screen... trust me, i tried leaving the original but when watching there was something that did'nt worked); i think is effective even if the frame is far from being perfect.
This was a thing that came into my mind when shooting one of the bycicle sequences. I was thinking "Ok, you need a lot of fast of cuts, brief sequences... but why don't show that he was actually running very fast". I shot an even more long sequence, i was running behind him on the house side (behind the cars), than we got out nearly in the same time and kept running in the street. Only the second half of this running is into the short. To me it add a bit more of realism.
In the same vein, some of my friends liked it, while some found it too distracting. Personal taste :)

@krestofre: we tried to shot another scene with the the pedestrian/bycicle, but it was on the maket street, an each time we tried, someone passed in line through the camera and the subject... the final one is really a bit too "cartoonish" but add a little fun time. The pedestrian is a filmmaker friend of mine, i helped him in a couple of project and he helped me (he's the same guy inside the car)

Hey,

Just caught the flick. Really enjoyed. Are they really that harsh in Italy (you're in Italy, right?) about the work?

Really loved lots of your compositions. The close-up of the hand writing, the papers falling, the lead re-entering the building. All very nice.

Did you use an adapter for this? These are some amazing colors and looks. I didn't know the XL2 could look this good. What's your secret (besides having a beautiful city to shoot in).

I thought the editing needed some fine tuning. There were parts where I think you cut a little too early (????? shot starts at 3:15. He might be running up a hill or something but it looks like he's staggering or getting up werid. To me that is).

Overall I liked the pacing, the adreneline, and the feel of the whole thing. Quite nice. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing you in the other fests.

No, i used a stock XL2 and a custom preset, i cannot remember the specific settings apart from the fact that the blacks are crushed and the colors rich and a bit saturated.

I instantly thought of Run Lola Run when I saw this but still liked it. The music kept me in the moment and I did like the car scene. It changed it up for me because I thought the running and biking was a bit long. I liked the shakey cam work all the way around and I loved seeing a little bit of Italy. The boss guy was good with his calm swagger but I wasn't feeling the co-worker and who would leave papers all over the place if they did fall anyway.

SPOILERS?!

this was craaaazy, the camera movements were almost too much at times but it DEFINITELY made you feel the urgency that this guy had in getting a freaking.. donut or whatever it was.

I thought the shot with that guy not being able to decide which way to go when walking as the bike was coming at him was great as well as a few other interactions with people getting mad at him on his bike made it more interesting and broke up the long journey he had to do.

I like the idea of only hiring someone for 5 minutes though, that was a good idea.

Also my fav shot was of the papers falling down the stairwell, that looked visually great.

well done!

For some reasons, when I first opened your movie, it already jumped to 00:46. Not sure this is because of my PC or not. Anyway, your movie is nice. I like the DOF, CC and the lighting. The acting is good also. However, the inside the car scene is too dark. Some of the fighting between the bike riding guy and pedestrians seem a little bit awkward. Overall, your movie is very well made.

This was another extremely well executed, small idea. It had a charlie kaufman vibe, with the weirdness of this company.

I thought the actors were really good and natural.

I think though, you could have used the 6 min better. Like We spent all this time one the one journey. When to me, you had the opportunity to give us the first journey, very detailed, in about a minute, maybe minute and a half, really packed with stuff.

Then you could have given us a second, more truncated. and a third more truncated still. I realize I'm talking about a different movie now, but I think you could have packed that first run up a LOT. Maybe still can, take a lot of the air out, a lot of the shots where nothing is really happening, and largely leave only the obstacles.

I think that would add greatly to the tension and suspense and apprehension, so that at the end, the payoff would pop a little better.

Right now, some of that flab in the run dissipates it for me.

But again, what I loved was that it was a truly 6 min film. A simple idea executed well. Nice work. Like our film is kind of too big an idea for a short. We had to really use every trick in the book, including V/O to get it across. But your idea is a real 6 min idea.

And God, you LIVE there? Nice.

The short-term contract joke was also lost on me, I didn't really get that part until I read the thread, although it started to dawn on me at the end of the film.

I thought that the color was great. It must be fabulous to have those beautiful streets as a backdrop. I too noticed the reversed P and wasn't sure if that was the way it is there or if you had reversed the shot. I don't know if would have been possible to reverse it back with compositing or not, might have been worth a try.

I thought the acting was superb, especially the bossman.

While the running scene did go on for a long time, I got more and more into it as it went along. I really liked the jumpy, high-shutter speed look. How did you get the shot of him coming up the stairs as he returns to the office? Did you speed it up in post? That was my favorite shot.

I really enjoyed this film, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't get overlooked. Can't wait to see your next film!

I enjoyed all the action shots in this film, nice work, I thought the 'dancing' in front of the bike was a bit tooo much, and the stealing of the bike...... well...... just can't trust anyone these days ;) :(

Absolutely gorgeous cinematography. I really really love it visually.

I don't think you accomplished the twist ending and here's why- the whole conflict between the main character and the man with paper happens offscreen and just breezes by. So I'm not invested in that plot piece when I watch it. Therefore it does not pay off in the end.

Another gripe... the subtitles have 2 misspellings. It takes me out of the movie when I see that.

Otherwise- very very good show.

Writing as I watch…
Ok, I’ll write ‘after’ I watched the film. It was definitely full of action which I dug. I think the camera work was making me sick for the most part. I can see parts of the running through the streets cut in half and you would still get the same frenetic effect. Just trimming 3-6 seconds here and there on some of the shots.

The English translation was fun. For the final film for festival entries, I would suggest finding someone to re-do the dialog translation.

As for the story, I think I get it, but it didn’t come across too clearly. The boss’s office was a little crammed for me.. Perhaps another location or a wider establishing shot would have been nicer. As of now, it looks like that guy is in a little cubicle giving orders that are completely unnecessary. I would have told that dude to go f himself. J

Congrats on entering the fest.

I enjoyed this! I'm not sure what was going on in why he had to go get the items or what they were. Still your style reminded me strongly of 'Run Lola Run' and I like that. Great effort!

Great camera work. I liked the shot looking up the stairs with the papers falling down. I think the Italian backdrop added a lot of the mise en scene without having to do much work! :)

I didn't quite get the story, but it felt like an experience. I felt like I got to walk around some town in Italy.

Good job.

So the other day we got our first "big screening" in Cremona. There where eight shorts, the level was high but i think our 5.00 managed to stay at level.
Overral an interesting night... at first i got the fear that the audio was messed up (the short projected before ours got an audio so low that we could not understand anything), but later our sound turned out very good and powerful; and it seems that people enjoyed it.

What wonderful photos! How I wish I could have been there. Beautiful setting to have your short screened at. Is this an annual festival?
