Hi Guys,

I have just got a HVX coming from a Sony Z1. Did a test time lapse this morning and the results are terrible. I have imported into FCP and outputted Quicktimes one as HDV and one in DVCPROHD 1080 50i I am in PAL land. They both look very noisy in comparison to shots from my z1 when viewed in QT. I have doubled checked to see if I had shot with gain on, and it was indeed off. I cant work out what has happened here. I shot it at 1080 50i. Any suggestions to problems here ??

Also, can anyone explain SW mode in the camera menu for me please, what does SW stand for ??

The SW mode in the menu allows you to assign specific levels to the switches on the camera. For example the Mid Gain setting sets the gain value assigned to the M position of the GAIN switch. You can select between the available options in the menu. Its all in the manual.

I have done quite a few time lapses before with no issues. As the camera has a huge range of settings to do this what recording mode are you in and what are the time interval settings you are using?

I would also recommend doing 25p instead of 50i. If it's time lapse, you're not concerned with the refresh rate as much as the image quality. Like timbo said, there are tons of settings, so play with all of them and make sure you use the focus assist functions if you don't have an external display. This camera can make some great video, but it takes a bit of adjusting to get it to do what you want.

I agree with PatrickR. I dumped my HVR-Z1P last year (just dreadful 1080I @ 25Mbs) for the HVX-200. On my HVX-200 I shot a time lapse of some stuff using 720/25P. I noted the the 720PN mode does NOT Work with interval mode recording. (refer to Barry's book/DVD's or the HVX manual).

As for setting, the visual quality of the HVC-200 DVCPROHD (720 or 1080) is so much better than 25Mbs HDV.. it might be something else that has been done during your workflow to out forom FCS. What is the final out put you are working to? (h264 or DVCPROHD ??).
