I am experiencing, combing ?? artifacts on exports of (HVX) 24P SD material. Horizontal lines coming off high contrast fast moving edges.
This seems most obvious on computer screens and plasma tv's.
Is this an interlace issue?? i thought 24 P was progressive?
another question...Is the 24P footage 29.98?... why isn't it 23.98 frames?
DVD's that I've made in DVD studio pro , played back on mac laptop look good only when the deinterlace button is selected. Can I bulid in the deinterlace to the DVD.
What is the best workflow for handling 24P footage to DVD and Web?
Someone suggested sorensen squeeze for removing the lower field...can i do this in Compressor???
so many questions...any answers???
thanks in advanced for any clarity!

If you shoot 24p or 24pA to tape: When you log and capture your footage, make sure you select "pull-down removal" in the capture settings.

just tried a test capture but i still see the artifacts on my plasm monitor when i step through the frames on final cut...
should i change my sequence settings?
Thanks fro any advice...would love to get to the bottom of this.
What does pulldown removal do??
also...just tried an mpeg2 export and it's still the same deal??
the 2;3;3;2 pulldown removal capture preset says that this is for 24fps Dv, I thought 24P actually lays down 29.98 fps?
Interestingly i notice that the artifacts show on 2 frames followed by 3 good frames, then 2 bad frames, then 3 good frames and so on...
anyone else???

Both 24p and 24pA are true 24p recorded to tape in a 29.97 stream. The only difference between them is how the frames are split up into fields to conform to that stream.
What you're seeing is 2:3 pulldown. The footage is 24p, not 24pA. If it were 24pA, you'd see four "good" frames followed by one "mixed" frame, and so on.
Pulldown removal will give you the original 24p frames. However, FCP can only remove 24pA automatically, so you should shoot 24pA.
For the footage you've shot in 24p standard, you can remove the pulldown using cinema tools.

Hey David thanks for that... is that the advisable workflow for working with 24P then...is there any loss of quality of feel by removing the pull down.
I thought 24PA was really only for when you were planning on transfering to film...are there any pitfalls to shooting 24PA when just completeing to DVD or Web.
I've never had the call to use cinema tools
can you walk me through it...!?

Removing pulldown is how you get the native 24p frames. You always want to do that with 24p material, unless you're mixing it with something else and can't or don't want to convert that other stuff to 24p. But if working with 24p material only, then absolutely you should remove pulldown and edit as native 24p.
Output is irrelevant. You can output as anything you like, even 29.97 for broadcast.
Check in the FCP section for procedures with Cinema Tools.
