Please HELP!
If the HVX200 and Canon XL H1 costs the same which would you get?
I'm a newbie. I have a HVX200 that I haven't had a chance to really use
I just got a Canon Xl H1. I can only afford to keep one of the camera's .
I purchased to film my music video's and I also have the RedRock M2 HD.
I' know there is a Canon thread but I really want to hear from owners of
the HVX especially since it is the great footage you all have shot that helped me
decide on the HVX in the first place.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Personally I consider P2 cams like the HVX better suited for short form projects...film, music video and the tape based HDV cams for long form stuff like events, documentaries, weddings, etc...
Me? I'll take the HVX.

No.
Not really.
PHOQ NO! unless you have an on-set machine (and peripherals) that can injest HD-SDI
beyond that, the canon is just an HDV camera...

That's wrong. Would you shoot an event video with a P2 cam?

Not sure how you can say it's "wrong" when you don't even know what he does.

Why not sell the H1 and buy an A1 and then maybe you could keep both. Personally though if you had a choice, go with the HVX... much more suited for music videos and you'll be able to make more money with it...

I would choose the HVX because I like the way it shoots like a film camera. If you want filmic looking 24p video, I would go with the HVX200.

Yeah the film look is the biggie for me. The HVX still does it better than any of its competitors, even the EX1 from what I've seen of it, and the 200a just sweetens the deal.
IMHO...

Why not shoot event video with the HVX? I have 4 - 32gb cards, and some 8-gb cards; at 720p24pn that is over 6 hours of shooting before a back-up. Surely over an 8 hour day you wouldn't shoot that much, and if you did you should still have time for you or your assistant to back-up the cards.

Done it for nearly two years.
What's "wrong" about that?

If you've got the P2 cards, or a portable off-loader, I think the HVX is a dream. No tape stopping and fast ingesting. I wouldn't ding the camera itself, just the budget needed to make it possible.

I had the HVX for over a year and loved the colors, but was annoyed by the low res. I was avoiding the HDV cameras because of the color issues, but now that I have the XL-H1 I have found that this camera specifically can be tweaked to get just as good of colors as my old HVX. In the the resolution department there is no contest, even in 24f mode the XL-H1 has more vertical lines of res.
The P2 workflow was awesome and one of the main reasons why I bought the HVX, but digitizing tapes isnt that bad.

We are a P2 house with hvx-200 to hpx-3000 (Soon with the Varicam P2). I would reccomend P2 over the competitors at this point in time.

Sure. Being able to record five and a half hours in-camera, continuously, without having to stop to change tapes? Why wouldn't you?

HDV = yuck, sorry, no thanks. We did that before, tapes are old technology, I hate tapes more than I hate film, I wouldn't want to deal with either one of them. This is 2008, it's well past time to be shooting directly to hard drives or memory cards like P2, Compact Flash, etc.

My feelings exactly. It's called progression. Soon DV tapes will be phased out just like 8 tracks, audio cassettes, VHS and soon, SD-DVD's. Solid state is the future... for now. (until someone comes out with some sort of other ground breaking technology)
I say this even though I do dub my footage to tape from my P2 card right now... (Because I can't afford a Blu-ray burner yet) But as soon as I get one, it's "Good bye mini-dv" for me.

HDV is going away and Panasonic will be a big part of that evolution. Notice Panasonic was the only company NOT to enter the HDV market. HDV Long GOP was intended to be a delivery format. Notice many NLE companies had problems ingesting and editing HDV?
All development for HDV ended long ago and all new development is on ONLY P2, AVCHD and AVCIntra.

Thank you for all the responses. HAs anyone ever posted a test with the two camera's?
I'd love to a/b the footage. I was sold on my HVX until I saw some footage from the
XL H1 on this site. It had sharp focus yet retained the film look.

I do on a pretty regular basis, I just use the firestore for that. for commercials and other stuff its P2 cards. When coupled with a firestore, the HVX200 makes an awesome event cam. I have made just as much with events on this camera as I have for corporate videos and commercials. Currently I have 2 HVX200's, and when the 170 comes out, it will be the 3rd cam.

Do it all the time using p2 cards. Would not go back to a camera that is tape based if you gave me it to me.

I was forced to shoot an EPK package with the XL-H1 last year. It's viewfinder is worse than the HVX's LCD screen, about half of my footage was out of focus and I tried to the best of the viewfinder and my eye's ability to focus it.
Ergonomics are horrible, stupid little buttons hidden everywhere.
I hate this camera, but lots of people like it.
I used to have a GL-2 and liked it okay but HDV, plus bad viewfinder and no flip out screen = useless to me.

Dan, I had the same conclusion and it's a pity. I think the viewfinder on the XL1 was better and man alive.. it's a heavy camera and makes our HVXs seem like a dream when doing handheld stuff. Does have a pretty long lens though.

You definitley will need an external monitor with the XL-H1, but in a pinch I have used the VF without a problem.
