Greetings to all.

Having lurked here for a while, this is my first post and "Red Shoes" will be the first film that Susanne and I have made. The plot is a fairly simple "race against time" in keeping with our "beginner's status". Our aim is to learn something (we've actually been working on the script and pre-production for about four weeks now and have already learnt a lot) while avoiding making fools of ourselves.

The film will be in German with English subtitles.

I am Susanne from Germany and the writer/director of "Red Shoes". This is my first project and I hope it will come out decently. Jason and I are making this together. Since English is not my mother language, I am leaving most of the communication on the forum to him.

I hope that all members have a great time making their films. Good luck to everyone.

The last few days have been hectic, and the situation was not helped by our internet connection going haywire. On Friday it started only working when we on the phone, so we had to dial the speaking clock to send e-mails (a theme for a future timefest film maybe?!?). Then it stopped working completely, but we finally got it fixed yesterday.

Meanwhile we have been casting and now have a complete cast (photos uploaded on first page). We also have nearly all our props and wardrobe, and all equipment is organized for this weekend. We will be shooting on the DVX100.

We've realized that even for a six minute short it's worth having some help in pre-production - next time we'll try to find someone who wants to act as production assistant or something. We're also learning how much everything costs! We didn't give ourselves a fixed budget for Red Shoes, but we have gone well over what we vaguely expected, even though we've been buying nearly all our props and wardrobe second hand. However, we're writing everything down so that next time we can make a budget in advance and, hopefully, stick to it.

Several more changes have been made to the script - we're now on draft 6.

Storyboard and shot list have been rather pushed to the side, but we'll get on with them tomorrow.

Cast and crew are all fixed except for a makeup artist, but we have a contacted a makeup school to see if we can get hold of a student so hopefully someone will come through.

On Friday evening we are having a read through/rehearsal with the entire cast.
On Saturday (24th) we'll be shooting the exterior scenes (as long as the weather holds up), and on Sunday we will do the interiors.

I know a lot of other timefest films are shooting this weekend too, so I hope it all goes well for everyone.

Thanks Shawneous!

Well, shooting is over and, all things considered, went very well. We feel we need three days sleep right now: Susanne and I averaged 2-3 hours sleep for 3 nights in a row. The weather cooperated, the sun moved too quickly, the cast and crew all got on really well and a good and exhausting time was had by all. We missed getting a couple of sequences, but nothing essential, so we have our story which is the important thing. Maybe if we had more time (and the budget) we would go back and get them later on, but we think this time round we will leave them be.

Will post some screen grabs soon.

We are pleased to announce that dvxuser member Luca Antonini will be composing the score for Red Shoes.

Poster updated accordingly.

Apart from that, we are busy editing. Over the last two days, in a fairly relaxed fashion, we shot two small scenes that were missed first time round due to time running out, and also reshot some sequences that had light continuity problems. Originally we had thought of letting these pass, but once the fatigue of the original shoot had passed it seemed to make sense to fill in the holes.

Thanks totitefilms and Beat Takeshi.

I have just posted a new thread on the "compression" part of the forum about a little problem we have at present. I'll repeat it here - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Dvxuser member Gohanto has kindly offered to do color correcting. Problem: how to get the files to him and back again with no or neglible loss in quality.

1. We can use yousendit.com to send files of up to 1 GB at a time.
2. We are editing in Final Cut Express. Our files are DVX PAL, 720 x 576, anamorphic (squeeze mode), 25 fps.
3. Gohanto would be using After Effects for color correction.

My export tests show that the best image quality comes from exporting a frame size of 720 x 404 (16:9 ratio). 1024 x 576 (16:9 ratio) gives a lot more jaggies. The best format/codec seems to be a Quicktime movie with jpeg2000 encoding.

However, importing back into FCE requires a 1024 x 576 file - the 720 x 404 file requires resizing. (i.e. "capturing" a 720 x 576 squeeze mode file into FCE with DV/PAL/16:9 anamorphic works fine, but "import" requires a 1024 x 576 file (just like for a still) and this seems not to be compatible with best quality export).

Any thoughts?

Jason

Horncastle
06-12-2008, 07:32 PM
We seem to have solved the problem above, so we are pleased to announce that Alex Donkle (dvxuser member Gohanto) is doing our color correcting.

I output a DV-PAL 25fps Quicktime file at the highest settings, 720 x 576, 16:9 ratio. This seems to be the PAL equivalent of a DV/DVCPRO-NTSC file and is native to Final Cut which recognizes the 16:9 ratio on reimport. As far as I can tell, there is no or very little loss in quality. The 6 minute final cut gives a 1.2 GB file which can be sent via yousendit.

At the beginning we presented our actors, now is newly time, after we had uploaded Red Shoes, to present the crew behind the camera.
There is "Charming Boban" our sound operator; Jason - always very concentrated with the camera and me (I like colours!!!)
To make a film was very funny and we made a lot of interesting experience. We enjoyed it so much.

Alright, I am surprised at the progress I am making today. Another film to watch and discuss.

So without more of me rambling (which I will do during my review) here we go...rolling and reviewing:

Loved the clock actually. Though the room got much warmer the second time we looked at it. Something to keep in mind as you edit. Matching color shot to shot.

Nice flat he has there. Totally not his day. But nicely shot so far. My only thing so far rounding out the 2 minute mark is colors. I thought the the acting was great. So far it is looking great. Amazing how you shot in the open like that. Added so much more realism. I would be interested to know how large your crew was to shoot on location without much trouble. I love the score so far.

And the reoccurring red was simply magnificent. It is nice to see someone who can coordinate colors that well in a production.

Really cute. I loved it.

Loved it! Great film! I loved the setup with the shoe rack that force him into pulling out the red shoes. That scene had me smiling. I felt the time crunch. The music worked very well. I also liked the cinematography. Great shots and nice use of your city!
Stuff to work on: The indoors audio really echoed at times.
Again, this was a great, great film!

alex whitmer

Excellent short!

SPOILERS

.

I loved the repeated use of red in various shots to reinforce the color. Really nicely done. That's the kind of attention to detail that makes a film cinematiclly strong and cohesive.

I was a little baffled by the old woman the MC helped cross the street. The final look was odd, and maybe added a few seconds that could have been used elsewhere. The look is great, I'm just not sure what it was intended to convey.

For example, those few seconds could have been used to show the MC hop the barrier he crossed on his way to the bike taxi. He runs toward the barrier, then the next cut, he's on the other side. I think a jump would have added to his desperation.

I absolutely love the ending. I'm not sure if you were going for this or not, but I picked up that a bitter memory of the past (the shoes) set up possible love interest for the future.

He comes across as somewhat drab until he puts on the shoes, then his life, or at least how he is percieved by others, begins to change for the better.

Music was great, locations excellent, pace perfect. Nice job.

SPOILERS BELOW!!

Thanks guys for watching our film and making the comments.

Mattykins:

1. The change in colour between the two room shots was intentional to show the passing of time, but maybe it doesn't work? An hour passes between the two, in the first the idea is that the sun is not up, in the second it is.

2. We were a fairly small crew - 4 people (director, DP/cameraman, boom/sound operator, general assistant) plus the actors/extras. We were a little bit worried about getting stopped, so tried not to be too obvious, although we did have a large white reflector. We think that in Germany we are a borderline case - we thought about applying for licences, but decided it might be a long-winded burocratic jungle and we didn't have a lot of time before shooting when we started thinking about it. Berlin is a fairly laid-back city and in the event no-one stopped us and everything was fine. We are well-aware that it would probably be difficult to do the same thing in the USA?

kurtmo:

Yes, audio is something to think about.

Alex/Frank:

1. Yes, the scene with the old lady is a little weak. At the beginning of the scene I wanted the audience to think that the old lady needed help to cross the road. In reality she is a bit of an old rascal who is attracted to Jonas (MC) and his red shoes and wants to have a little fun at his expense. This was the meaning of the last part - as he runs off down the street, she watches him go with a triumphant smile and then folds her stick (which she never needed in the first place) and walks briskly off. Maybe this scene doesn't really work because I originally envisaged an older looking lady with a curved back like Quasimodo. This would have allowed us to show her old and bent crossing the road and there would have been more of a contrast when she folded the stick, straightened her back and walked off.

Alex:

2. Jumping the barrier: This was actually in an earlier cut, but was removed to get in under six minutes. We considered it less central to the story than the Old Lady sequence.

3. "I'm not sure if you were going for this or not, but I picked up that a bitter memory of the past (the shoes) set up possible love interest for the future." We were aware that this was a possible interpretation and were happy to leave it open. The main thing is that Jonas (MC) has widened his horizons a little.

Thanks once again to all of you, we really appreciate all the comments.

Susanne and Jason

P.S. We saw the first 20 films last night. We will start making our own comments shortly.

This is a charming short! I was grinning happily throughout the entire thing. This is due, in no small part, to the fun details -- his hesitation before resorting to dusting off the old box, the look on his face as he re-reads the card -- great stuff. I really like this brand of quirky circumstantial humour.

You've crafted a lovely little story in six minutes. And the ending ties it all up so nicely. Well done! Congratulations.

Thanks for compliments from the last messages.

Pauly: If you are really interested – I bought the shoes in Corso di Porta Ticinese (this is a name of a street) at Milan in Italy when I lived there, more or less four years ago. It was a birthday present for Jason. When I wrote the script of Red Shoes I thought that we can use these shoes, because they have a big size. Then we got Ulrich as our main character and he is nearly 2 meters tall and his feet are one size bigger than Jason’s. We offered him to find other red shoes, but he didn’t want that. After the first day of shooting I think that he regretted that he didn’t get our offer, because he suffered a lot!

I'd like to take a moment and say something about your subtitles. Normally, I have a hard time watching a movie with subtitles because I'm torn between watching the action unfold on the screen and reading the dialogue. I really didn't mind the subtitles here because they were so well done and unobtrusive. They were very easy to read, allowing me to pay more attention to the action on the screen. I wished all subtitles were done as well as the ones in this movie...it would make the experience of watching a "foreign" film more enjoyable...

Thanks Blaine, that means a lot to me. I had never done any subtitling before and was a bit worried about doing something I didn't really know anything about. Of course, I do have an advantage over many others in that I am, at least, mother tongue English.
Jason

PS. I must say that I didn't really enjoy doing the subtitling. Ideally it would be better to have someone else do it, since I felt I was defacing what we had spent so much time and work on. Every step of the way felt like a compromise (in the quality of the film, but also, since I kept the subtitles as short as possible, in the translation).

Beautiful movie! I can't believe you two are "beginners". But, knowing Jason is a photographer helps explain the great cinematography. The story was nice and simple, yet engaging and entertaining. And I loved that you took us on a little sightseeing tour of your city in the process. Great work!

Nice movie! I really liked the lead character. He was in a hurry and stressed, yet kind to the elderly lady; he was slightly irresponsible, yet wanted to still get to the meeting with the Japanese on time. His was shy and yet was obviously bold enough that someone had purchased for him bright red shoes.

The screenplay writer here captures so much of who we all are. We are always striving to be better and yet, as human beings, we make mistakes. He never gave up and did make it to work.

Capturing this depth of character in a short is nothing short of phenomenal. This is one of the best films of the fest. Congratulations on fine work! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) As this is your first film, I will watch your work closely in the future. :2vrolijk_08:

You did a really great job on this film. The editing is probably some of the best I've seen in the fest (though I felt that the pace was sometimes inconsistent, going from fast to slow and fast again--it's all supposed to be a race, so I wish the pace had been fast from beginning to end). You covered a ton of ground, and yet all your shots seemed really solid and well-planned. Very pro. The shot of the red staircase is amazing. Good acting . Had a great tone too. Quite enjoyed this.

Susanne. This was GREAT short. It's pacing was nice, the subtitles worked. The theme was hilarious and the acting was nice as well. There were only a couple things that confused me. The old woman on the street could obviously walk so was she flirting with the man? Also the ending with a simple picture in the middle of a black screen felt off. Maybe it would have felt better over a different image? I really liked this. You are a really good director.

Oh, I just realized that I didn't review your film yet.

Man this was a great short! Really funny and honest. The production quality was really good overall. Great sound and score.

What confused me a bit was the train. It was just driving into the station and in the next picture it's leaving already. I think it would have been better if it was waiting there and he was running to the train and then it drives away. Just a minor critique.

The great thing about this short is all its little details. You really took care of it. It showed when I read your costs plan.

Good work! Looking forward to future entries :)

Thanks very much all of you for the comments and lovely compliments. We really appreciate them.

Matt:

(Others noticed the same thing about the old lady scene. This is my answer from page 7.)

The final photo scene: We think you are right - maybe it would have worked better to show the photo inserted into a second photo of the hand and the cellphone which maybe could have been at 50% to emphasize the shoes.

Simon:

We agree with you about the tram. The footage was there but got cut to get into the six minutes. However we should have found a way to show the tram stopped.

A general comment:

After making this film we have a better idea how much material will fit in a six minute film. We had a little bit to much for this one. Red Shoes suffered a little from this mistake.

Thanks again everyone

Hey guys,

Just caught the film. Really enjoyed it. The music was perfect and I really enjoyed the acting. Your locations were nice and the colors were outstanding. Good use of day light for my eyes.

I thought the pacing was just a tad bit slow at parts. Not slow as in boring, but overall, just not as frantic as I would have liked. The bit where he talks on the phone felt long to me.
Some of the editing seemed a little strange to me. I can only guess that you wanted the black bits before the jump cuts because it was consistent. It distracted me.

Also, is there something about Red Shoes that I'm missing. The subtext for everyone's look seems a bit larger than I felt like I was getting. Like, when the old lady looks at his shoes and then to him and asks him to walk her across the street. Not sure if it was just that the shoes don't seem to match the rest of the guy or maybe it's something else.

I also mirror the bit about the old woman already mentioned. She seemed out of place, in both the way she reacted to his shoes and to how much time we spent on her. I mean, sure she's an obstacle in the film, but I felt you lingered on her just a bit (overall).

Pacing issues aside I thought this was a very nice, well put together piece. The angles and actors were great. Your colors were fantastic. I really like the camera pan for his medium when he's trying to catch the bus and it's moving behind him. Very dynamic and added that energy that I think was lost in some of the pacing.

Still, a good film and a great first entry. Can't wait to see more from you guys.

I could agree with Daniellus about the old lady.

And I might have wanted the payoff emphasized a little more.

But this was thoroughy enjoyable. What was most impressive, was the editing. I read in the credits that Jason was the editor? He has such a great sense of timing in my opinion, and knew exactly how long he had to stay on certain shots, move on to the next shot. And I mean in a purely practical way. He seems to understand how quickly an audience can get a piece of information.

I also thought the choreography of the old lady scene was particularly nice. Just the geography set up I guess. Crossing the street. Then I kept seeing trains in the background and that kind of kept reminding me that he might miss one. Then seeing the bike-cab dude across the sctreet again. I don't know. I just thought it was impressively set up.

Likewise, nice job on the details. Like the red shoe box sitting there the whole time. And blowing the dust off.

This one and the Italian one really make me want to get out and shoot some stuff around NYC.

Thanks all of you for watching the film and for the criticism, it really is very much appreciated.

Daniellus, thanks:

You are certainly right about the phone call scene (and others have mentioned the same thing). We were well aware of this in editing and shortened it as much as we could. Stupidly, we didn't have any material for cutaways on this scene. We were lucky in that the scene following this of Jonas getting his first pair of shoes only shows his legs so we were able to put the end of the phone call here. In hindsight we probably should have cut the beginning of the call - maybe it could have started where Jonas says "Lunch?". Really though this was a problem with the script - we now realize that it would have been much better if Jonas had been doing other things that made him look in a hurry while he was on the phone.

"The black bits between the jump cuts". I think here you are talking about the inserts of the mess on his bedroom floor while he is looking for his second black shoe? Originally these were straightforward cuts, but they didn't feel right to me. They are of course Jonas' POV shots and I thought "well he's turning his head a little between each view, they wouldn't follow each other instantaneously" so I put in a single black frame between each one like an eye blink. Personally, I feel this works but I'd really appreciate any other feedback on this little detail.

The old lady: yes, another scene with problems. I think Susanne covers that in a reply to an earlier post at the top of the page.

Mark Harris, thanks:

"the payoff": this was a weak part in the early drafts of the script. Successive modifications made it a lot better, but it probably does still lack something.

the editing: thanks especially for this comment, it's great encouragement. Yes, I was the editor from the point of view that I physically did the editing and I made the first rough cut alone, but thereafter Susanne sat beside me as we trimmed it down so much of the timing is due to her as well. This seemed to work pretty well - we really pretty much agreed on all the suggestions the other made. I then did the sound track alone, but Luca Antonini, our composer, did some final cleaning up, added a little foley and made the final mix.

I would say that the choreography/blocking was also very much a collaboration between Susanne and me. Wardrobe and props (and therefore responsibilty for the details) were really all Susanne's work. Above all I would point out that the script and directing the actors was Susanne's work. Unfortunately my German is still very poor - there is no way I could have done any of that!!

Thanks again all of you,
Jason

Thank you very much Danielleus for you interests in our film. You are not the only one who was irritated about the old lady scene so I gave already an answer for this one before.
The main character (Jonas) is a little bit boring and he didn't want to put this shoes on, because they are to much coloured for him. The thing is that all the other people found that this shoes are very nice and make Jonas an interesting person. For this reason the old lady was attracted to him. And now I gave you the longer version I wrote before:

Yes, the scene with the old lady is a little weak. At the beginning of the scene I wanted the audience to think that the old lady needed help to cross the road. In reality she is a bit of an old rascal who is attracted to Jonas (MC) and his red shoes and wants to have a little fun at his expense. I really liked this film, but I kept waiting for something more to happen. I don't mean that in a bad way, but it sort of felt like a modern day fairy tale to me. I kept wanting to see some magic. Maybe it was the fact that fate seemed to line up so perfectly where he had to wear those particular Red shoes, which reminded me of Little Red Riding Hood. Maybe it was the music, which felt very lighthearted and almost like something from a children's show. Or maybe it was the fact that it was all in German, a language I often associate with fairy tales like those of the Brothers Grimm. Of course it was probably all of those things combined. I've worked on some shorts that had a children's theme and this had the same feel. I'm not saying this as a detraction in any way to your movie, which I thought was great, I'm just offering a different viewpoint.

I didn't think the old woman was strange at all. I was just surprised when she didn't turn into his fairy godmother. :) i also felt that there was more to the story line that the shoes were given to him by his ex-girlfriend. Is he still in love with her, which is why he can't get rid of the shoes? The film looked great, location audio wasn't bad, and I loved the music! Great movie and looking forward to seeing more from you guys. Just make sure that the next film has at least one troll in it. :)

This was a very nice feel good film.

Art direction was great! I like all the reds and yellows.

The crossing the street scene was weird because I didn't understand the motivation of the older woman, but that was explained in the thread.

I think the lighting in the office could have been more dynamic (kinda flat), but that's a small issue.

Thanks,

Brad and Joe: thanks for watching and posting.

Brad - it's interesting to read the different sensations people have - we think that you finding a bit of a modern day fairy tale there is great. The whole ex-girlfriend thing is left open to people's individual interpretation on purpose, but yes, I think yours is very much a possibility.

Joe - yes, the office lighting is rather flat. That room has lots of windows and is really very full of natural daylight, so I thought we would shoot using mainly that. However, we were late getting there - it was evening and the light was fading fast so I had to throw in some extra artificial light in a hurry. Live and learn!

Thanks again both of you,

Really enjoyable short! Loved the colors, the energy, and the fun of the short! Some of the shots seemed straight out of a feature film. Loved seeing such awesome locations.

I agree with the comments about the old woman. One thing that would've made it work for me is if the guy had turned around and noticed that he had been duped.

Only other problem for me was in the sequence where he is looking for the matching shoe, where there is a quick series of (I think) three shots of various areas where the shoe isn't. Each shot was maybe 5 frames too short for me, and I think there were some black frames in there. Just took me out of the story for a moment.

Minor quibbles though. Really solid work, and I very much look forward to seeing what you do next.

Thank you for the compliment that you love the sound of german. I have to admit that I personally don't like the sound of my own language in general. The sound is often too hard. Jason:

After we shot this film I thought a lot about the old lady scene and also about the last detail. I always thought that he never ever could look back to her and understand her little game/secret, because it would destroy the sense: All people around the main character (Jonas) are on the ball and he isn't on the ball. I already described my thoughts about the old lady scene in this thread, but one thing I didn't describe: When we got Yella (the actress) for this part, we thought that it was lucky, because she is an intelligent 70 years old women very much "on the ball", so to work with her would be a pleasure. She wasn't really the idea of an old lady which need help to cross the street, but I thought that we could find a grey wig and also the right dress. I was completely happy to find her, because it is very difficult to find an elderly actress for free, because we hadn't really a budget, even there we have paid at the end some money on this film. I went with her in a second hand shop to choose the dress for her. We spent two hours in this shop and she tried a lot of different clothes, but there was no dress that fitted her. With every dress she tried, her part of the film changed in my thoughts. After two hours of patience we found this purple dress and her part in our film had changed completely. Then we started to shoot with her and I have to admit that my eyes hadn't any more enough distance to the story to see that perhaps a little change like your suggestion could make this scene better.

You aren't the first person to mention those 3 shots, so obviously there is a problem. Regarding the length - we played about with them a bit. Originally they were longer, then they were shorter, before ending up on their present length. Originally also, they were just straight cuts without the black frame between each one, but somehow it didn't look right to me. The change just seemed too instantaneous for Jonas' POV, so I put in these single black frames as though he was blinking. I think it must have been the wrong decision though if people are irritated by it. I'll have to go back and look at the original straight cut once I've distanced myself a little from the film.

Cheers

This was the next film in the line up for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The music fit well, the shots looked really good and yeah, they felt like they were out of a feature. I was stressing with the guy when he was talking to the bike guy, he was soooo slow with everything I wanted to grab him and say hurry up. :) I love how that scene played out. The only thing that irked me was that they didn't cross at the crossing area and it was such a big street to be crossing in the middle, especially with an old lady. Over all I though everything fell into place. Good job. Oh Yeah, I'm glad it wasn't dialog heavy cause of the subtitles.

Love the performance when he realizes he's overslept. I laughed out loud. The clock is cool too, and made me feel like this was going to be a slightly cartoonish piece, which it is, I think.

Establishing the story right away really helps. I liked the story and enjoyed watching it. To me, it felt more like a story of actions, rather than a story about a Meek and shy, quirky guy going through these actions. I think it just needs more close- ups of your character where he is reacting to what is happening.
For example: the scene where his heel comes off, you only have wides, and an insert of him picking it up. I want to see what he is feeling at that moment, and how he deals with it. It's gotta be a devastating moment, because wouldn't he KNOW that the only other dress shoes he has are the Red Shoes that he's been to scared to wear? I think your audience will understand that his heel came off very quicky, maybe 2 seconds, the rest of the time you can show him.

It sounds like you had a pretty developed idea of this character. it didn't quite come across the screen for me though.

I agree with others that the payoff isn't that big. It would have been bigger if he seemed like he was in more of a rush. I know when I'm late I'm like a rocket out the door. He seemed to be taking his time, so it was no big deal when he showed up on the wrong day. Also, when I'm pressed for time I'm constantly checking the clock like a lunatic.

I thought it was very good and can't wait to see your next, (or updated version of this) and I'm so jealous of your shooting locations.

iSTy, Beat Takeshi, yeehaanow & Erik Olson: thanks very much all of you for watching and for your comments, we really do appreciate them.

Beat Takeshi: You have a good eye to notice the crossing area, but yes it is there and you have noticed something we talked about quite a bit. It's surprising how difficult is to get a view of a large road without a crossing area in one direction or the other. We wanted the road to be wide enough and with enough traffic (fools that we are!!!) to make a decent obstacle. In the end we decided to keep the crossing area pretty much in the background, but that if someone did notice it, it was perfectly plausible that Jonas (main character) would not have used it since he would have had to make a small detour to do so. The old lady, of course, is playing with Jonas so she goes where he does (she's not really too worried about the road at all).

yeehaanow: Thanks for your detailed critique, and especially for the one concerning the lack of close-ups in the scene where Jonas breaks his shoe. As soon as I read that it hit me that you are perfectly right. Not that he knows that the red shoes are the only ones he has left - he doesn't yet, he thinks he still has the black ones - but all the same he's got to be pretty irritated. Funny that no-one else has mentioned this.

Erik: wow!!! thanks very much.

The score to this film was wonderful! Hats off to the composer.

I think the production value on this film was very well done and I had a fun time watching it. As for the story, I’m not sure what the point was of the story besides this guy having cool shoes and everyone being impressed with them. Were you trying to say something with the film? Perhaps a hidden message that guys out there should think outside the box and dress themselves a little better?

My gf actually bought me some new shoes not too long ago and I’m amazed how many people have commented on them. Girls obviously know what they are doing when it comes to guys dress apparel. (most of them anyway) Thank you for sharing.

Zim, I should try downloading again. Don't know of anyone else who has had this problem.

Edgen, thanks for watching and for the comments. Our composer was Luca Antonini, to whom we are extremely grateful. The main idea underlying the film is that Jonas (the main character) is a little drab and lacking in courage/iniative in life. He doesn't normally have the courage to wear these bright red shoes and is a bit embarassed that he is forced to do so. At the end, however, he realizes that everybody likes them and that being active can bring about positive changes in his life.

Thanks guys

Maybe this scene doesn't really work because I originally envisaged an older looking lady with a curved back like Quasimodo. This would have allowed us to show her old and bent crossing the road and there would have been more of a contrast when she folded the stick, straightened her back and walked off.

Thanks for the explaination, sorry I didn't go back and find it. I think it wasn't clear because you only had 6 minutes. Maybe if you had shown her without the cain first, then unfolding it and complimenting his shoes in a dreamy fashion right before asking for help. Then she could fold the cane like you already have.

Nick,

Thanks for coming back with further comments. Maybe it did need something at the start of the scene. Just having the old lady looking at Jonas with obvious interest before approaching him might have helped.

In the past few days, DVXusers Ben Sliker and Justin Kuhn sat down and chatted over AIM while simultaneously watching the same TIMEFEST films. We call them, "The AIM sessions". Here's their thoughts on "Red Shoes"

This is a 'special edition' of the AIM sessions, Assistant Director Brad Mate has tagged in for Justin from the crew of JAM. Please excuse the stupid out of order time stamps by iChat.

Hope our humor translates well :)

spesliker (12:09:46 PM): we should do red shoes first
spesliker (12:09:56 PM): they are european and losing internet after the 11th.
spesliker (12:20:56 PM): you got red shoes up and ready?
TheBrad84 (12:20:52 PM): yep
spesliker (12:21:12 PM): 3
spesliker (12:21:13 PM): 2
spesliker (12:21:14 PM): 1
spesliker (12:21:15 PM): go
spesliker (12:21:30 PM): best alarm clock EVAR
TheBrad84 (12:21:17 PM): homosexualalarmclock.com
spesliker (12:22:14 PM): if Ronald mcdonald made love with a clock, that's what the child would look like.
spesliker (12:23:20 PM): the black flashes ... ick
spesliker (12:23:45 PM): this is like the scene in sandlot when he puts the converses on.
spesliker (12:24:23 PM): what a DICK!
spesliker (12:24:32 PM): SHE'S A CRIPPLED OLD LADY
spesliker (12:24:41 PM): OH SNAP, SHE'S NOT, SHE IS?
TheBrad84 (12:24:29 PM): or is she?
TheBrad84 (12:24:46 PM): steal the bike. you know you want to
spesliker (12:25:10 PM): that train's not going so fast, he could have caught it
spesliker (12:25:34 PM): that's the problem with these europeans, they haven't seen enough "jumping on the back of train" westerns
TheBrad84 (12:25:27 PM): lol
spesliker (12:26:22 PM): obligatory stand in by crew member with cell phone.
TheBrad84 (12:26:41 PM): oh man, remember the last time the germans met with the japanese....well nevermind
spesliker (12:26:59 PM): lol
spesliker (12:27:52 PM): very simple concept, but it never really carried any weight to it.
TheBrad84 (12:27:50 PM): yea it was a little too cutesy
spesliker (12:28:15 PM): and what was with the old lady?
TheBrad84 (12:28:08 PM): where was the time element?
spesliker (12:28:36 PM): i was expecting the old lady to come back into the fray
TheBrad84 (12:28:27 PM): yea
spesliker (12:28:47 PM): he was late for a meeting
spesliker (12:28:50 PM): TIME
spesliker (12:28:52 PM): CLOCK
TheBrad84 (12:28:40 PM): meh
spesliker (12:29:24 PM): final thoughts?
TheBrad84 (12:29:58 PM): besides teh black flashes adn some editing issues i thought it was solidly shot and acted. didnt really pack any punch for me. was very matter of fact
spesliker (12:30:49 PM): i had some issues with framing, there's a lot of open space in a lot of the shots, which is fine if it's motivated, but i didn't really see any
TheBrad84 (12:30:46 PM): true
TheBrad84 (12:33:23 PM): one last thing i want to say about red shoes. the ellipses need to be worked on. there were a couple times where an action was shown that we really didnt need to see in order to get to the next shot. like the shot of them beginning to walk across the street. that wasnt necessary and the fade in and out seemed like they didnt really know if htey should include it or how to include it correctly
spesliker (12:33:57 PM): good critique there.

Susanne and team,

this was a great first step for you guys. I think we got all of our critiques out in the session, so i won't reiterate any of that here. I just love the foreign accents, i don't know why it adds credibility to the acting for me, but it does. That said, even if i didn't know what they said, the gestures and body language, the way your actors carried themselves, was very good. We'd really like to see something from you guys that is more dramatic, and thanks again for bringing some international flavor to the DVXfest mix!

Thanks so much - this was great fun! We appreciated the comments and think most are valid. No more icky black flashes - lesson learnt!!!! Yep - next time we will make a more dramatic punchy film. Maybe we will kill some Europeans, before your country is full of dead people.:evil::evil:
Thanks so much that you did this session before the 11th. Great!

You are hilarious! We do kill a lot of people in these flicks don't we?:cheesy: Your film was refreshing. Make the movies that let you speak your voice. If it is a refreshing fun movie, then that is what it is. If you want to launch into the action world, jump on in. Whatever you do I am sure it will be great!:2vrolijk_08:

Thanks guys,

Yes, we'll go on making the films that we want to make, but maybe we can find a refreshing way to kill those Europeans.:D
A little aside on the subject of refreshing death: where we are having our wedding party next week (where my mother has a house) is the beach where Peter Greenaway made "Drowning by Numbers".

In case there is still somebody who is looking in the TimeFest threads: 'Red Shoes' will be shown on the 'International Oberhausen Filmfestival'. The film is not accepted for the competition, but it will be shown in the 'Open screening'. The Festival happens from the 30th of April until the 5th of May. The 'Open screening' is at the 1th of May. I am very happy to participate on an important Festival like this one in Operhausen, which is one of the oldest and most famous shortfilm festivals.

Ok - it is a question of money in USA. I didn't realized that. The german festivals haven't entry fees. Usually it is only a question of the quality of your film, which have to decide a jury. In most of the festivals here you only can enter, if you will be present when they show your film, if the film is not older then more or less two years and if your film wasn't already shown on other festivals in Germany before. The last thing is valid exspecially when the festival is very famous. In Berlin we have the 'Berlinale' - which is a very important and famous festival (nearly impossible to enter in), but there are also other smaller ones like the 'Interfilm'. I think in the 'Interfilm' can also enter films, which were shown before in Germany. At the moment they are calling for entries and after the weekend I will try to enter 'Red Shoes' also there.

As I've already told you this is great news! I really hope you enjoy the moment. Should be a lot of fun. :)

I've still yet to enter a festival outside of DVXuser. I've done a few local things but nothing like paying to enter a real Festival.

Someday...

You guys deserve this! Hope you have a great time.

Ok, I am back from the oldest short film festival in the world. I don't think that I had the same experience as Wim Wenders, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and Werner Herzog, who were in Oberhausen years before, but I enjoyed it very much. :Drogar-Happy(DBG):
All the filmmakers had to present their films before the screening, also me in the open screening, which wasn't part of the competition. I was so nervous that I missed half of what I wanted to tell the audience. It was very exciting to see our film on a big screen and to have the reaction of a non influenced audience. Not all reactions were nice , but most of them were positive. :2vrolijk_08:
I was surprised that a famous festival like this one in Oberhausen was only held in one cinema (with different screening rooms) and then there was only one location, the festival lounge, to meet people after screening. The festival was very open minded to all genres of film, with lots of international guests, but at the same time there was this intimate casual atmosphere - very charming.
To see how a film festival works and to see how people meet for important contacts, was an interesting experience.
I am very happy to have been part of the festival.

Here are some photographs!

Thank you Mike for commenting :). I think it was a great experience for everyone. Even though you could see that many of the people were used to being in festivals, while a minority, like me, were obviously at a festival for the first time.
