View Full Version : Possible Nikon mount for future HMC150 like RED cameras?

I finally checked out the RED camera site (and may I just say WOW!) and not only do they have their own interchangeable lens system there is another option to switch out the existing RED lens mount for a Nikon 35mm lens mount.

I'm no engineer but I was wondering if it is possible to have the same kind of option for the next generation of DVX - the HMC150. It would stand to reason that it could be possible but it might be very cost prohibitive but let's just say they offered an HMC150 with a Nikon mount, no lens would be sold with the camera. Since they would not have to supply the Leica lens would it maybe somehow level the extra cost conversion (once initial r&d is worked out)? They could also offer a Canon mount for that matter if my reasoning is sound.

I personally would pay the same amount for an HMC150 with a Nikon mount minus a fixed lens, imagine the possibilities. But I know the 35mm adapter companies that have sprouted up would not be happy if Panasonic offered this option.

Anybody have any thoughts? Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere else, like I said I just saw the RED website and it really peaked my interest. Can't afford $20,000 plus for a camera/lens/battery/etc. set up but could afford the HMC equivalent.

I really doubt Panasonic would do something like this. Partially to seperate this camera from their more expensive ones, but also because it'll have 1/3" CCDs. The RED uses a 35mm sensor. This would give it a different field of view, so your lenses will have to be adjusted accordingly. Of course, Canon has done this with their XL cameras which have 1/3" chips. It'd be a cool feature, but I don't see it happening.

Impossible with the sensors in the camera.
