Hi

I just shot some snowboarding this week with the p2 set at 1080i and at 24p. When I view the clips in FCP 6, they are blurred, at times with entire lines of the moving image cut out. However, when I watch the captured clips in Quicktime, they seem much better. Are my settings just wrong? If so, what should I be working with?

Many thanks!
Chris

did you remove the pulldown?

yes, i believe the transfer settings as well as capture presets both were set to remove "advanced pulldown and duplicate frames"

Did you shoot 24p standard or 24pA?

If you shot 24p standard, FCP will not automatically remove the pulldown. It only works with 24pA in FCP.

i shot standard 24p, but:
1) when i "log and transfer' in FCP 6, under preferences I have selected a preset saying "remove advance pulldown and duplicate frames"

also:
2) when I try and apply "tools" + "Remove advanced pulldown..." it says that "this .mov clip does not contain DVCPRO, DVCPRO HD, or DVCPRO-50 NTSC Video"

isn't that wierd? I am absolutely sure I shot in 1080i 24p

Standard 24p doesn't use advanced pulldown, so it's either not going to work at all or it's going to make a mess of your footage. Like I said, you can't remove standard pulldown automatically in FCP.

I understand... but I guess my question is, how ought I import this 1080i/24p footage so that it doesn't look like a mess? Because right now, it won't play in the timeline or the viewer without being all messed up...

The only place I can view it normally is through Quicktime... ...

Sorry if this is a dumb series of questions, I'm just not getting this workflow right now... it's worked for me in the past, and I don't know why it isn't now...

Thanks for your help
Chris

You should either work with it in a 29.97 timeline, or use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown (I think it can handle DVCPRO 100 1080). Ask in the FCP section for details on procedure.

What I'd like to know is whether anyone has imported 1080/24p footage (not 24pA) into FCP with flawless results (using Cinema Tools or whatever). So far, I'm waiting to hear, because to my knowledge, it can't really be done effectively.
