View Full Version : Variable Frame rates post production workflow...

So I just got the HVX and I've been playing around with it for the last day. I'm really excited to test out the variable frame rates in 720p mode, but also confused about the post production workflow. I've got the capturing down but don't know how to work with them in FCP.

Coming from shooting 16mm, if you over crank or undercrank, when you play back at in a projector at 24 FPS you will get the desired change in speed depending on your recording frame rate....simple enough.

However, when I shoot something at either 60 or 12 and drop it into a 24 frame FCP time line, it retains the capture speed?!?

Now am I doing something wrong? If I adjust the speed to 50% on a clip that was captured at 60fps, will FCP acknowledge that there are excess frames and still give me a smooth, clean image? or do I need to change timeline settings or import preferences?

you are correct. If you are shooting 720p 24pn and say you overcrank a shot at 60fps, it will playback like a 24 frame clip would in a 24p timeline. What the camera does is shoot at 60 frames (or whatever rate you want) and then it plays back and acts like a 24 frame clip.

What if I record in 720p 24p? same deal? and basically you're saying yes I have to speed it up/slow it down in post?

No, you would have to process it through the Frame Rate Converter utility. Then it will work like you expect.

I have the same problem. I have my settings at 720/60p. and my frame rate at 60 frames a second. And I can not get it to play in 60 frames a second when i cut and drag it into FCP after I import it. What is the Frame Rate Converter Utility? and how do I get to it Barry? Is there a way that I can film in 60 frames or 12 frames or whatever and just change the frame rate in FCP to 24F/S and get a immediate result.

IWhat is the Frame Rate Converter Utility? and how do I get to it?

In Final Cut Pro 6, go to Tools and select DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter. You then make a few selections and your set. Fairly intuitive. I've attached a screen shot.

Yeah but on my DVCPRO HD FRAME RATE CONVERTER in FCP 6 it has a "..." after the word converter. when i scroll down and click it nothing comes up. The sreen shot you attached is no where to be found, I don't know how to get that to pop up. Is there a log and transfer setting that you can just change so that it imports it in 24f/s instead of going by what the frame rate is in the p2 card file???

Google "DVCPRO Frame Rate Converter : Apple Final Cut Pro Tutorial" and you will find just that. I did not watch, but I bet it shows you how to use it.

I'm having the same problem HVXSHROSPHIRE.... I get this error message too! (in the pic I tried it with a 23.98 fps clip, but I get the same error message when I try it with a 59.94 clip too!)http://media.corpu.com/CorpUtv/fcperror.png

I don't know what to tell you. I select a clip (have only used 720p60) in fcp6 browser, then select the frame rate converter, select the conversion options and then OK. It has always worked for me.

Anyone else?
