Friday May 2:
We're leaving for the Alvord Desert! This will be a 900 mile roundtrip effort for the first shoot of timefest
Saturday May:
We got to the Alvord Desert, found our hotel in the tiny town of Fields, ate good hamburgers and milkshakes and then made our way to the desert floor. The sunset wasn't all that great due to the Steens mountains, but now we have a good idea for tomorrow's shoot.
Sunday May 4: We awoke at 4:45am and made it to the Alvord Desert floor by 5:39. Yay for us that there was this massive cloud bank low on the horizon so we didn't get our sunrise shot. Then it started raining. Finally the rain cleared, the clouds cleared and we got our shots!

Sunday May 11:
Going location scouting today. Still need a deep woods and beach location, also trying for a sand dunes one. I took my wife out for Mother's Day last night so today is all TimeFest!
http://www.brainspasm.com/red/Aetas/May11_ShawnScout.jpg
Location scouting went well! Here's me out on the beach figuring out the precise location of our climatic scene, it will be a hike for everyone. We're thinking of assembling Red at the car and loading into backpacks for the hikes, we're really hoping for no rain.
Monday, May 12
Finally locked the cast and planned a production meeting for Wednesday. We hope to finish shooting this weekend!
Thursday, May 15
Had a fantastic cast meeting last night. Victoria and Hunter are going to knock this one out! On the script front, I got the finalized script off to the translator. We are going to have all our dialogue in old Latin! We have a consultant (a friend of mine who studies Latin at an east coast school) who is translating our dialogue and providing MP3s of him reading our script so the actors can prep. I feel this will help give proper weight to our story. On another front, Herman is acquiring for us some voice over help from his side of the pond! That's right, the cast of 'Aetas' will be international. Thanks Herman!
Friday, May 16
Prepping for a big weekend shoot! I'm extremely glad to announce we are adding Jerry Turner (DVXUser Fixitinpost) to our team! So this weekend we're going to be hiking into locations so this necessitated a logistical change. I did some research on Reduser and ended up buying a Kata backpack specifically for my Red. Here's a shot of it!

Monday May 19, 1:54am
Winding down from an exhausting but thoroughly fulfilling weekend shooting 'Aetas'. All the footage exceeded my already sky-high expectations. Hunter and Victoria took the acting beyond what I had even written. AJ, Jerry, Sarah and Ken went above and beyond continually. I'm too exhausted to type more. We now have 120gb of raw footage. I just kicked off a batch of processing today's footage. Will post some BTS pics later.
Monday May 19 9:42pm
Finally got all the Red footage processed into workable 1k proxies (to later conform using Crimson). I was able to go through and get a great idea of what I have to work with. Wow! I cranked out a few stills to show you all what's in store.
Thursday May 22
My sister Sarah (who did an AMAZING job at wardrobe/makeup) also found time to snap off some great BTS shots. Many of them give away too many plot points, but here are some we could show! I'll link to another page so this one stops filling up with my pics

As Herman announced, we finalized casting of Janusz as the voice of Serapis! Go here to read more http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1290460&postcount=85
Last night Ken and I got some more editing done and now have a good idea of where to go. We're so tempted to go do one more shoot day but I think we're going to be at 6 min as it is!
Sunday June 01,
Today Ken and I did an epic 12 hour editing marathon. I had the rough cut about half way done when we started so we were able to get the assembly done fairly fast. The majority of the time was then spent fine tuning it. I’m editing on an 8-core Mac with 6gb of Ram and yet I’m still very glad that I am doing a conform process with the Red. Working with 1k Prores files is so nice and so fast, feels like I’m working in SD! A big result out of today was that we have a 22 second gap, so we’ve decided on one more shoot to go get three more shots! But, Herman needs something. So we exported the cut, with title cards in place of the three upcoming shots, and FTP’d it up to a site for Herman to grab. I’m a bit nervous! Even though Herman is a collaborator, he is also the first viewer. Hope he likes it!
Tuesday June 03
Herman loves it! He says he’s now considering getting a soprano to give a Gladiator’ish style vocal accents to his recording. Wow!!!
Wednesday June 04
The location we were going were some shallow caves on the coast that are only accessible during low tide. The tide charts we consulted were wrong by nearly two hours. So we decided to film anyways, which involved all of us wading through cold ocean (on me it was nearly to my waist), all of our shoes and jeans were soaked. We hauled in the full Red package, tripod, audio, costumes, torch gear, etc. Then shot for an hour and had to haul back through even more water! But...we got our shots :-). Ken and Jerry were awesome, this was quite a guerilla effort!
Thursday June 05
Picture lock is finished! I dropped in the three shots but then spent another hour or so constantly re-watching and fine tuning the rough edit. My wife Chantelle helped provide a second set of eyes on this one, her insight was very valuable. I then uploaded a 1k version of the picture lock for Herman. I also got word from Herman that he has three possible sopranos that he is looking into, this is amazing!
Tuesday June 10
Herman just delivered the rough cut of his score!!! Wow!! I’d have been thrilled to get this as the finished, I can’t believe this is the rough! I listened to it multiple times, then carefully watched it again and gave him a few minor notes specific to timecode. Herman also emailed to say he’s chosen Bolivian Soprano Alejandra Wayar Soux. I can’t wait to hear what she sounds like!
Wednesday June 11
Finished the conform process! I used Ian Bloom’s Crimson. I had a few small hiccups with fading, time remapped shots and a composite shot, but I figured them out in decent time. I now have a 2k ProResHQ 10 bit version of Aetas for grading!
Friday June 13
I took today off my day job (software engineering) and spent a large chunk of the day grading! I sent the whole project over to Color and had an awesome time. Red footage responds so well to grading its ridiculous. Herman writes me that he had a recording session with the soprano Alejandra and it went really well!
Saturday June 14
A whirlwind day!! I’m personally moving apartments today so this was a challenge. Herman emailed me the final score & sound mix and I dropped it over the finished graded picture. My father & brothers in law were here to help so I screened it for them then quickly exported it and uploaded it to DVXUser. Done!!
Wednesday June 18, 2008
Still no viewing :-(. I hope people like it!

Hehe... Oh yeah. I begged and pleaded for this one, but in the end, we decided a 6 hour drive one way would have been too much to try to fit in. We found a pretty sweet alternative that's now within a half hour drive of where I live. It's absolutely perfect and should look pretty stunning in the end.

No, he's asking HOW, not where. Personally, I use an avalanche beacon and then go foxhunting for it when I need it.
Also, the Red is great in the field... a minor hiccup here or there (Shawn heard some choice mumbling from me when we were in the desert), but overall pretty darn awesome. Just be sure to keep it covered... roads can be dusty. Funny story about that... I wish I could show pictures, but I was too pissed to think of grabbing my Nikon.

:-) Glad you noticed! His name is Serapis and thats a BTS shot of Sarah fixing his cloak.
My sisters Sarah and Rachel did all the costuming for this short. Thankfully, they had the costumes previously from earlier shorts, Halloweens, Renn Faires, etc. Though we did somewhat destroy one of their custom dresses during this shoot, so I'll probably have to pony up $100-$200 for a replacement.

Lol, that sure looks funny out of context. Beneath my feet is the enormous cape I had custom made out of the Ukraine for this piece. It's a massive cloak made from black wool. It looked a bit too 'new' so I laid it down and then, using my hands, broke up a ton of desert dirt and rubbed it in good to make the cape look worn. It worked surprisingly well.

I'm with you Shawn! When I edited the first version of our film I think it was around 10-11 minutes. I was like, "How the heck am I possibly gonna get this down to 6-minutes and have it make sense?"
I did it eventually...and I actually like the 6-minute version. I just had to cut out relatively huge chunks in the process!
I still want to do the "full-length" version eventually just because there are some good moments from the actors...better story development etc. But I think the 6-minute version will definitely be tighter! For better or for worse...
Did you have to actually cut out much content Shawn or is it more just having to "tighten" the pacing?

6 minutes ain't much time for an EPIC tale. It's enough time for a few closely connected scenes. Short film concepts don't always make for good long form concepts, and good long form concepts don't always allow for good short films. It's like trying to adapt a big novel into a 90 minute movie.
Shawn, if your story really is "epic" you're gonna have to make this a trailer. Or very surreal. Or tell one part of the story that can have a satisfying ending in such little screen-time. I don't think you can do much epic storytelling in 6 minutes. It's enough time for epic imagery though. :-)
Holy crapola those grabs are sweet. Looking very forward to this.

I trimmed a whole shoot day when I realized I had 120gb of footage after just four days! That said, the pacing is very tight. I've done about a dozen shorts so I knew back in the writing that it had to be tight.

Unless of course you need a shot of him engulfed in flames while running screaming out of the cave. In that case I would suggest that he stop drop and roll once he hits the sand. Then cue the extinguishers. Or not.

The shooting today went... umm... interesting. Our biggest tip for people is probably this: If your shot depends on the tide (or avoiding getting caught in an alcove by it), be sure to check more than one tide chart. There's a chance you could be looking at last year's chart. :bath:
Shawn Philip Nelson
06-05-2008, 01:51 AM
The location we were going were some shallow caves on the coast that are only accessible during low tide.
The tide charts we consulted were wrong by nearly two hours.
We decided to film anyways, which involved all of us wading through cold ocean (on me it was nearly to my waist), all of our shoes and jeans were soaked. We hauled in the full Red package, tripod, audio, costumes, torch gear, etc. Then shot for an hour and had to haul back through even more water!
But...we got our shots :-)
A BIG shout out to Jerry Turner (fixitinpost) for being generally awesome as well as stepping up today and being an AC/co-DP for the shots.
A big shout out to Ken for resisting the urge to light me on fire.

That was a very real concern!! I had my Red in a Kata backpack so if I had fallen...salt water Mysterium! There were two cave locations, one of which required wading through water that waved up to nearly the hip. I was worried stiff that if we had packed into that location that after an hour of filming the water getting back would have been chest deep (we would have had to wait it out probably). Thankfully we found an alternate cave that looked small but actually went quite deep. Getting out of that took only wading through knee deep because we could then scale up some barnacle and seedweed coated rocks and make our way along a sea cliff to get back to the main beach :-)

I'll try to post my torch how-to this weekend. Oh, and my pro-tip for torches in caves: don't. Unless it's a large cave. The smaller one we were in filled up with that black smoke very quick. You should have seen the soot in our nostrils. I was cleaning house for awhile and it was just pitch black.

I'm waiting... :D
Ken K
06-09-2008, 12:05 AM
Okay, the moment you've all been waiting for... how to make a torch!
Step 1
These are the supplies you'll need:
http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step1.jpg
1) Old, worn out t-shirt; 2) Tiki torch fuel (Home Depot); 3) Staple gun; 4) Scissors; 5) Hefty stick; 6) Bottle of water
*Note: For the young kids reading this, be sure to use safety scissors!
Step 2
Cut out strips from the bottom of your t-shirt, like so:
http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step2a.jpg
Then cut the ring so you have one long strip, like so:
http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step2b.jpg
Step 3
Staple one end of a strip to the stick, like so:
http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step3a.jpg
Step 4
Wrap the strip around the head of the stick until you get to the end. Staple the end of the strip to the stick, so it stays there. You don't want that strip flying off when it's on fire! To get through all that fabric, I recommend at least 1/2" staples, but 9/16" are preferred. Press against the fabric hard to make sure you get a good staple. I put about 3-4 staples in to make sure it stays fastened.

http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step4b.jpg
Continued below...
Ken K
06-09-2008, 12:06 AM
Continued from above...
Step 5
Pour that water into a bowl and set it outside, wherever you're lighting your torch. This bowl of water is to douse your torch once you're done. Cut the water bottle in half and fill the bottom up with tiki torch fuel, like so:
http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step5a.jpg
Then soak the end of the torch in the bottle for a few minutes, like so:
http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step5b.jpg
Step 6
Remove the torch from soaking and squeeze out any excess fuel. Just be sure not to get any on you! This is fuel... don't let it drip or spill where you don't want fire.
Step 7
Fire up your favorite Zippo or Bic lighter, like so:
http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step7.jpg
Step 8
Light your torch and be careful! The flame takes a couple seconds to pick up, but once it does... it does!
http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step8a.jpg
http://brainspasm.com/stuff/torch/step8b.jpg
There you have it! Enjoy and please stay safe. I take no responsibility for any stupidity. :P

Thanks! I forgot to mention that for the shots we did, I used an old black t-shirt instead of a white one. The white shows up on camera, so if you prefer the look you'd see in a movie, go with a darker color like black or brown.

Thanks everyone! Norm, why aren't you entering this fest? I thought I remember you being interested in it when they first announced it. I was looking forward to helping out with sound again. :) And no, I wouldn't sabotage it.
Yikes, this thread's exploded since last time I got to check in on it! Just too much personal stuff hit me all at once, when I was thinking about it, and I still had BERLIN to completely wrap & get out onto DVD, etc.
Shawn, I've lost your email (think you should have gotten one today, Ken), so could you email me again so I can keep you abreast of the cast/crew party date?
Looking forward to your entry guys!

LOL... I take no responsibility for that! But yeah, by all means, use the remaining strips/t-shirt for any necessary bandaging. :D

Hey Brad! Nice site! Do you ever participate in Fest entries? If not, you should! A guy with your skills adds so much to the production value and often you see that lacking in fest entries.

Thanks for visiting my site. I'm obviously not a "code monkey" so I just made it in Rapidweaver and threw it up there.
Yeah I'm working on both Daniel Piatt's "The Small Multiple" and the monster Fat Monster project. Thanks for asking.
I wanted to ask you how was the noise on the Red Camera? Did you record to the camera using the camera's phantom power?

Nice! Yeah that Fat Monster flic is going to bring about a whole new level for hollywood'esque production value in a DVXUser fest!
I definitely did not use the Red's phantom power. I'm strictly a Sound Devices guy. Their preamps are great. We went from the SoundDevices into the Red via line level. That way produces excellent results.
Btw, who rated my thread a 1 star?? Come out wherever you are! :-)

Umm… not sure if I should answer that.
Really I like any historically based film. Why shoot each other with guns when you can hack off their limbs… much more civilized.
My goal is to one day cut sound for Gladiator 2: Maximus from the Dead :-)

Workin tonight on finishing the conform process for the picture lock and getting Herman some notes on his awesome score. I'm using Crimson to conform my edit to a 2k master for 10bit grading. Then I'll have a 1080p version ready for high quality exhibition. I'll make the fest teeny weeny version off of this at the end.
Shawn Philip Nelson
06-11-2008, 02:23 AM
Woohoo! Conform finished. I now have a nice 2k project and my export over to Color worked nicely. Now I have a Color project ready for my grade!
Btw, anyone know if 'Aetas' will be the only entry to fulfill the prop element with a sundial?

I think we should consider putting a limit on the number of sundials in a film. Not everyone has the resources to put 4 or 5 sundials in their film and it's not fair really. :)

Massively cool update!!!
Jeremy Tuttle has come on board as our poster designer. He's designed two different totally cool posters. We intend to use both in our post-DVXUser festival run but for here, we can only use one poster for the entry. So...vote! Top poster (back on post 1 of this thread) is Poster A and the second one is Poster B. Whichever one gets the most votes will be our headlining poster for the competition.

Original that I had up there? These are the first two, and only, posters I've posted. The only thing even close is the banner, which only really works in an extremely wide aspect ratio, definitely not the vertical portrait of a poster.

Hmm... I suppose I could redo the banner into a poster by making our hero walk up a steep incline. Nothing quite as epic as a 90-degree angle desert floor. ;)

PS - Did you borrow those shoes from Shawn?
Only if he is a little kid's size 7 ;) . It was hard coming up with a poster that didn't give anything away, so I went with the shoes (they are relevant - sort of ) . I'm glad you liked it, though.

Wow! Feels awesome to be done. Herman came through like a champ with our mix and score and Color is an awesome grading tool! 'Aetas' went through a full offline-online conform process, involves compositing shots, multiple time ramping/retiming shots, etc. In the grading it's very intensive, every single shot is graded and most have secondaries as well.

Thank you Susanne! 'Aetas' is indeed a romance, I hope you enjoy it! I'm truly not sure how it will be received, since traditional DVXUser romantic films usually involve one of the lovers shooting and killing the other :-)

Did a large update to the production log on the first page! Filled in what went down during the hectic final two weeks, from rough cut to final submission. Now that the floodgates of viewing are about to open, I'd like people to have the complete picture should they care to read it. I am contemplating removing all the screencaps from the first page to make it load faster and draw more people to the production log, but I figure that during fest viewing some people who don't know about 'Aetas' may click on this thread and maybe the screencaps would convince them to view our entry.

The two new posters (at least they are new to me) look really good. I should leave everything there - it's a really good first page. Re-reading your production log, I've realized that you didn't yet have your actors when you shot in the desert, so this is presumably only a small part of the film? A rhetorical question - you don't have to answer: we will find out soon enough.
