Yes we were so close to actually completing a fest before this got posted. Anyway I think it will be a Hallows Fest or something Halloween themed but I'm not sure.

Wow, I was wondering when this would pop up. Actually, truth be told, I had forgotten all about this crazy tradition. Anywho, I read the post above and thought "No! It's too soon for Halloween!" But alas, it is not. I suggested FearFest last time around (sticking with the theme based thing rather than genre) and someone mentioned that would be good for the October Fest (no pun intended)

I will put some more thought into it. Looking forward to reading the ideas!

Its funny how fast the seasons roll through. Having a Hallows fest every Oct would get tired fast though.

I believe It'll be;

A Short fest - 30 seconds, like Ad-Fest?

Hallows Fest

Seasonal Fest - Something about Xmas

Y'all know there's more than enough time to plan, write, pre-produce, produce, and post-produce an entry for the CURRENT fest, right? TimeFest doesn't even close for another five or six weeks...

And thank God! We just hit a major speed bump in our project. We had thought that Matt Sconce would be able to help us, so we stopped looking for new equiptment, but it turns out our schedules are too conflicting this time around as he is booked solid.

We are hoping we will be able to get back on the bandwagon with some decent equiptment and whip this thing out.

NOTE: I hope the next fest is a full fest (with a 6 minute limit) instead of another ad fest type deal. I really enjoy doing shorts. I think it is too early for a christmas themed fest, but you never know I guess.

Halloween Fest!!!

I hope this tradition dose not end. I find it to be the fest that generates the most attention and buzz. This theme is just so much fun, especially during the fall. I know there are a few serious horror fanatics on this board, join with me to keep the tradition alive.

Make a comedy if you want. Make an action film if you want. Make a noir film if you want. Make a horror film if you want. Make a chick flick if you want. Make a Braveheart Epic if you want. Just have it deal with a central theme of time, and insert a shot of a clock, and you're good to go.

Gary Sconce

I would like a "Monster Fest," :zombie_smiley: That would leave it open for any genre within that guideline. Just needs a 'monster' in it. Could be comedy, drama, sci-fi, romance, etc. Nice and open-ended, yet fits to be seen around Halloween time.

ConspiracyPenguin

I like that idea, Sconce! "Monster" is so vague, it would leave the door open to a number of different types of films.

I think a really neat one could be PhobiaFest. Especially if we're looking to gear up for something to be delivered in the fall. This would give plenty opportunity for people to make something creepy if they like, but wouldn't restrict them from doing any other genre.

Also, I rather like the idea of having the next fest associated with a color. Say, for instance, we had RedFest. The requirement would be to have distinctive imagery related to that color. The film could have scenes ranging from a rose garden to a blood bath. The idea is kinda in the vein of Kieslowski's Blue/White/Red films.

Mike Insane
06-02-2008, 07:38 PM
I'm a fan of fear fest or the color fest. Fear could easily be any genre... fear of asking a girl on a date (comedy), fear of crashing on the moon (sci-fi) etc...

The color idea seems like it is an even bigger challenge than the other fests because the production itself must feature that color. Still, you could get some great stuff like the Pleastnville effect or maybe an ambitious team could do something like the fight scenes in HERO.

Mike Insane

Is it just me or are their other's who are chomping at the bit for the next festival? There isn't enough time for me to make an entry for timefest (less than 2 weeks).

Maybe 48 hours production, that's feasible. But I'm willing to guess it took much longer than that to assemble the crew, get the gear, location, cast, etc, write script, prep, etc.

Barry_Green

Hmm... so to make a good film I should make it 2 days? Okay:grin:

While making films quickly is always fun, for people like myself it's nearly impossible as I'm a full time engineering student and time my shoots to be away from exams, lab reports, and homework.

I'm sure the nature of people's jobs play a huge part of their flexibility for shooting and I'd guess many people have even rougher schedules than I do.

I've pulled together a bunch of things in just a few days. But, at this point, no dice. I'm in the midst of closing on a home and working full time, not to mention DJing (shameless plug* Come visit me at the stage of the Venice carnival on Saturday). I need a bit more time. For everyone who has time, don't listen to me, shoot it! You might be shocked at how creative and good it turns out to be. I am just really excited about what the next festival might be.

I would estimate that IFHY had a grand total of 20 hours of work put into it. Not bragging. Just sharing a real world example of what can happen if you free yourself from the idea of how a film is "supposed" to be made.

3 hours of story/character meetings, 4 hours of heavily improvised shooting, and the rest went to cutting, color and the 5.1 sound mix.

And according to the voting it was the fifth most popular entry. It's been surprisingly well received by festivals and critics. Execs at Magnolia Pictures saw it and requested to see Heart of Now asap. Its gotten me meetings with agents/managers. And Filmmaker Magazine just contacted me about doing a profile on me and Sabi Pictures as one of "the new faces of independent film". i mean, isn't that ridiculous? The response has been amazing and I can't believe how far a $40 short shot in an afternoon has gone.

So I'm just saying, Barry's right. Two weeks is more than enough time to pull together something that will resonate with an audience.

That being said, I have just allotted $18,000 to make four shorts between now and the end of the year. At least one of those will be a DVXFest entry if the thematic choice piques my interest. So watch out! ;)

improv will always be a part of my... umm... pictures. i like the surprises. i like shaping a scene in front of the cameras with the actors. my process is to set up a framework that gives structure and support to this style of filmmaking.

i don't know if i should post his name, but the acquisitions exec at Magnolia said... i'm digging up his email... here it is... Here's my small suggestion. At my filmschool we always do 2 projects, 1 is a normal short, the other is a short but no dialog. Funny thing is, is the no dialog films are always always better.

So I propose- SilentFEST.

Oh yeah? Well I propose SoundFEST! The short must alternate a visual and sound design which sells the idea of what you think is about to happen... then each time the visuals return we see reaction to what we just heard. All shorts must have 10 seconds (broken up or all at once) of black, with audio that sells the turning point.

Thpppppt!

Can we at least have dialog when no mouths are in the shot?

I want to have "reactionFEST"... you know... deliver all the lines on the reverse shot. (seriously that would make a pretty good comedy... show the girl mortified as you hear a revolting insult... then show the guy as she tops it... then show the girl again when you hear the guy gasp... c'mon... funny).

Halloween isn't celebrated all over the world (or Xmas for that matter), and as we seem to have a number of countries represented here, why not a seasonal thing, like a Fall Fest. Or maybe an equinox fest?

FearFest works, as it doesn't cater to any one nation's holidays.

On the other hand, maybe some of the countries represented here can chime in and suggest something that is particular to their Fall festivities and / or traditions.

Not sure how many countries are here, but I have seen Ireland, Romania, Singapore, Germany, Mexico, England, Guatemala, Lithuania, Holland, Latvia, Canada, and U.S. Seems I remember one fellow from Nigeria at one time or another as well.

I'm sure there must be more. Let's really mix it up here!!

i'm not an actor either and i'm struggling with this concept too. i think it will yield some interesting technique, but limiting to the degree that characters can engage with each other, thereby limiting the depth of the storytelling.

i still prefer themes to genres.

i know it would never fly, but if anytime was a good time, PoliticalFest would make for some very relevant filmmaking.

other ideas...

PopFest - pop culture, celebrity, and the contemporary milieu as a theme
CrimeFest - thematic looks at people living on the edge of society, bending/breaking the law, and the why and how they got there.
MonsterFest - i like this idea. your monster could be literal, or it could be an alcoholic, or a rapist, or a little kids fear of the dark, endless possibilities...

Robert Duval Got his start in film with his no-dialogue roll as Boo in To Kill A Mockingbird. And what a brilliant job.

You don't need dialogue to act. Heck, if it was up to me I'd turn the sappy Titanic into a silent film and shut those two actors up.

Have you seen The Strangers? Before it devolves into senselessness, the first 20 minutes are quite powerful with maybe five or six lines the whole time. I think if you create the right circumstances, characters might not talk to each other for huge amounts of time.

FEST IDEAS

MusicFest - your piece must include a live music performance of some kind and center around the theme of music somehow, this could be a full band or a kid who likes to sing in the bathtub, but something...

BTSFest - all pieces must be a behind the scenes type piece, i think this could be really fun and give opportunity for mockumentry or more serious films about making films...

Personally, I think this theme based system is the best of all possible worlds in that, if you want to do Sci-Fi within the theme requirement, do Sci-Fi. Musical? Film Noir? Comedy? Horror? Drama? Action? It gives the filmmaker the widest possible latitude to create something different and interesting to him/her. It gives the viewer a lot of variation, too.

joshreluctant
06-21-2008, 09:07 PM
Yeah I think throwing something out thematically works best. For instance, lovefest could've had romantic comedies, action movies with a spouse\girlfriend as a plot device, a horror film about a couple, and of course you can bring science fiction to any theme. Genre wise, it's nice to have that free reign to decide what your budget\capabilities\skills will lean you towards.

You can always make a horror film for any of our fests. We've been doing "theme" fests instead of "genre" fests so that people can do whatever genre they want.

I would definitely want to be apart of the next fest. If its due date is sometime at the end of october i would have enough time to make it.

Freak Fest!! that seems like an interesting theme.. if that is a theme..

Other ideas:
- Communication - have to show a device of communication. (cell phone, e-mail, radio, etc)
- Death - has to involve the death of someone or something
- poverty - has to include money
- survival -
- secrets - has to include a note being passed from a person
- Hate -
- travel - has to include a vehicle of transportation
- Passion -

Some ideas. The ones in bold are ones i like.

Seein' as how October is right around the corner and all, and this fest probably won't be over til Mid July... Kholi votes...

MONSTER FEST (not to be confused with Fat Monster Fest, where a bunch of men crowd into an apartment and get drunk together).

MONSTER can be defined MANY ways, and not just your typical green slimy skin. Monster's can be machines, mean people and more. And best of all it would give us 3 1/2 months to shoot, bringin' us in on time for Halloween release.

Put up a poll and "monster" will sweep it.

It would be cool if people actually create a monster, rather then make some person "a monster"... like arguing that Hannibal is a monster (even though he is, but then it's just HorrorFEST 2... which is still good I guess)... but if a DVXuser comes up with something like The Village I'd say it's still acceptable.

In The Village, at least there was a monster... too bad they had to scooby doo it right off the bat.

The Village would have been better if they revealed that everyone in the village was a hatfield... and they'd all been kept there for a hundred years by the mccoys... who were dressing up as the monster.

"My daddy wore this here monster suit... and his daddy before 'em... and now it's your turn... you keep an eye on them hatfields and iffn any of them wears red, you go into town and tear some sh*t up!"

But Simon, I am in the same boat. I have one idea that can be adapted (if the theme is right) and I have some people awaiting my go who are looking forward to tackling this bugger. I am thinking of shooting 16mm for this one.

And no way, stunt training? How much is airfare to the US? haha. Have fun with that man.

Jason mentioned it in the thread (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=140087) about the TimeFest finalists and screening etc.
At the bottom it says:
Winners, and Prizes will be announced at the L.A. Screening, and will be simulcast live from DVXFest.com via video webcast. Next Fest will also be announced at that time.

Wow, 16mm sounds really good! Hope it happens, looking fordward to it :) I am gonna use my HVX and will do some 60p slomo!

Airfare depends on where in the US :D New york is about 630$ and LA is like 950$ :undecided

Well, lets say I can do things "normal" people are not able to do... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
Example:

So I'll try to make the best out of it :)

I already got a plot in my head, whatever they call the next fest I have to find a way to fit it in the theme -it´s so cool - I just have to make it (and a nice reason to break in my new steadycam).

why would you want to break your new steadicam?

I'll take it

Yeah, I am in the same boat. I wanted to shoot this film already for all hallows fest last year. I developed it further now and got some pretty cool ideas and hope so bad it fits in the theme! I'm dying if it doesn't :embarasse But I think its quite versatile.

And I am also gonna use my stabilizer in a film for the first time :) It's getting quite dusty already. Me wants some fast running scenes :D

No spoilers yet...

.... well, maybe a little teaser.

Imagine you come home from work, you find out, there was someone in your flat. And as you look throu the rooms the door slams - OHMYGWD! he was still in here the whole time.

.....and that happens EVERY day.

Title is: "At the Door"

....O.K. that´s it. Already too much told.

I have an idea as well and I'm hoping that I can make use of it.
It will depend largely on the theme announcement.

I'm sure I can make it work though...

Frank, that is EXACTLY what our idea is. Except ours is on a spaceship.

I fear we'll be seeing a lot of that damn spaceship. A lot.

You fear it? I was told I have to sleep in the fucking thing when I go down there for the screening. That, and Mark keeps sending me random videos of puppet shows he made in the cockpit set.

16 is enough, sir, the plot lines are starting to get monotonous!

-----------------

I don't have an idea yet, I always wait until the theme is announced then I start brainstorming. Then I write and work that out for a while. Then I see if I can do it. Then I start filming and get pissy when I don't act up to my own standards for the first take or two. Then I yell when someone f's up the pan shot of the dune buggy (when we only had one chance). Then I reluctantly pull the plug because nothing is going right, the deadline is in two days and I still have half the damn thing to film.

Well, hopefully it will go differently this time. :D

I already know what Mark did in that space ship with those Zuccinis and Corn Cobs and whatnot, for his next film - and I am shocked!

Just curious, If the scriptfest scripts can be used in the next fest, does that mean it's going to be the same theme and requirements???
