my parents and i just had a conversation about me pursuing film/video production. they just gave me an option to choose a panasonic dvx100a or a mac 15' 1.5ghz powerbook. which should i choose. and might i remind you that i am a beginner (been on a couple sets, internship). what the heck should one do?

What kind of camera do you have now? What is your current computer set up?

I would go with the PowerBook. Yes you do need the camera to start but what good is the camera without being able to edit it and get it into other formats like DVD the web or dare I say even VHS.

Technically you need both when it comes tog etting started. But my DVX CAN'T send email, get me on the web, chat with friends, play games even.

I wish my parents gave me that kind of choice to make. Let us know what you ended up going for.

Wrock, No offense but that has to be the worst advise I have ever seen on this site. Ever. He has a computer.

Get the camera. Even if your PC is old and slow you can still cut and learn. Just have to wait a while to render.

You want to be a filmmaker get the camera.

I'd go for the camera as well. But everybody is entitled to their opinion.

Definitely the DVX.

Your look of your movie depends on the camera...not the computer.

Wrock; what in gods name are you even talking about? He already has a PC and what about VHS? People still use that? ::)

Get the DVX Aaron; you will so not be disapointed.

I'll go one better than Wrock...

$3200 buys a good camera, a rocking computer... but have you ever considered just how much porn you could purchase with that kind of bank?

Think about it...

Get your parents to promise you a $3000-$3500 budget. Buy a used DVX100 for $2000-$2250 (I got mine for $2k) and a new PC or Mac with the rest. You can sell your old PC if you need extra money. Walla! You can have your cake and apple too! ;D

Good luck Aaron! Good times ahead.

My advice is have your parents buy you the mac and buy me the DVX!

I would get the camera,,find some way to do some simple edits make some money and then buy the mac.

Now now boys, lets not be harsh. Everyone has a quota of goofed up advice and offensive remarks to use up. Some of us are even quite overdrawn...

get the camera. (unless you have a place that will rent one to you, in that case, get a powerMAC not a powerBOOK)

So your parents are willing to give you up to $3400 (give or take) for a new DVX?

Ask for cash. Go to your local casino and put it all on black. It's all or nothing. Let fate decide whether or not you will become a filmmaker. Problem solved.

And if by some chance you're risk adverse. Just buy the DVX100.
