I'm trying to load some HDV 1080i footage into after effects and am getting odd results. The footage is 1440x1080i from an HV20. It has the 1.33 stretch to get it to 1920x1080 resolution. When I make a composition in After Effects I put in the resolution as 1440x1080 and the pixel aspect ratio as 1.33, but the composition always ends up with a 4:3 aspect ratio. I checked and the "lock aspect ratio" box isn't clicked.

Does anyone know how to get this to work? I figured it'd be jut like adobe premier which applies the stretch to get the 1440x1080 footage to fill a 1920x1080 frame.

In AE under the monitor window is a set of small buttons. The one with a square and a double ended arrow over it is the pixel aspect ratio correction button. This needs to be clicked for the preview to display at 1.33 Otherwise it just displays at 1:1 which gives you a 4:3 screen. Some say leaving pixel aspect correction off yields a better preview - I honestly cant tell and leave it on all the time.

The pixel aspect ratio correction is really rough. It just takes columns of pixels and repeats them to simulate aspect ratio, so your effects can look blocky, and horizontal motion can look weird, especially with diagonal lines.

In some ways it is more precise, in other ways less. I find myself turning it off and on all the time.

Interesting... I'm going to have to play with it and look alot closer while I'm in AE...
