View Full Version : HVX Still Shot Capability ?

Does anyone know what the still shot resolution is with the HVX (e.g., 4mp, 5mp)? Does anyone have examples they could post? I searched the forums but didn't run across this info. I'm a wedding videographer and am wanting to upgrade to HD. Clients are also requesting stills from the video but I wonder if the stills would be comparable to a still camera.

Thanks

Are you asking if you can capture stills using the HVX200 or what the size of an exported still is from a movie?

a $100 digital still camera would have a insanely higher resolution then your hvx200

You can only get stills exported from video. It's not a fast process. The maximum resolution would be 1280x1080 in a 16x9 frame (1.5 pixel aspect ratio).
As the rest of the posts indicate, there is no logic in using the HVX200 for stills.

If you want an example of a still from the cam, go to http://www.appstate.edu/~mb72378 (http://www.appstate.edu/%7Emb72378)
then click on still gallery,
then on detour,
these are resized but they are stills from a short that I did.

72 dpi... looks decent on the web, but not for print!

See some screen 1280x720 screen grabs at my site as well: http://www.awakenedfilms.com/

There is no such thing as DPI in this context.

There is in print. Because when you export, you are getting a 72 dpi still export.

A still image from the HVX has no DPI resolution until you output it. The same still image output on a high-resolution color printer isn't going to be the same size as it is on your monitor unless you scale it.

If you take a 1280x720 still and output it on a 1200x1200 DPI color laser printer, you'll wind up with a postage stamp sized image instead of the 60" one you get from your Sony WEGA TV.

When I export an image from a file I've captured, then its dpi is always 72.

That's my point.

So I use PhotoZoomPro and up rez it.

I agree that dpi has no meaning when importing to an NLE, but when creating by export a still frame, you get 72 dpi

When I export an image from a file I've captured, then its dpi is always 72.In your particular case using your tools and your workflow.

If you create an image in Photoshop or GIMP or many other applications you can specify the DPI/PPI of the image, but this is a completely arbitrary number.

Its purpose is to allow you to maintain the correct size of an image across different output devices with different resolutions so that something that is 6"x4" is always output at that size regardless of whether the destination is an LCD display, an offset printing press, or a $50 inkjet printer. If you have a 72 dpi image you drew in Photoshop and output it with a halfway decent program on a 300 dpi dye sublimation printer, each pixel in the source image will be scaled up so the image doesn't wind up 1/4 the size you intended.

The HVX doesn't create JPEG files with embedded DPI information in the header, the 72 dpi figure you quote is assigned by your software. You can go into the preferences in Photoshop or GIMP and use any other number as the default, and you can of course change it when creating the JPEG file.

Here is a nice discussion of the meaninglessness of DPI when taken out of context of the output device:
