has anyone "butcher" up a speaker stand to accomodate a fluid head so that I can mount my jib arm on it?
It makes perfect sense to use the speaker stand because of its high weight handling capabilities. Some speaker stands can handle 160lbs.
It sure beats buying $600 tripod legs. A speaker stand cost about $100.
Any leads? Any hackers up for the challenge?
Go for a combo stand instead. They are far more rugged and have a "rocky mountain leg" so you can level them on any surface.
Amvona has them for ~$100. I just got two in the mail yesterday. Free shipping for items over $100!
And you can use them for lights as well...

I used a lighting stand, but Im not sure how you would put a fluid head on the top of it...

It's the DIY section, there are ways depending on how the head is constructed.

Buy a surveyors tripod.

how do you level that tripod without a head with leveling capabilities? You wouldn't be able tofine tune its level.
A surveyor's tripod levels like a regular tripod.
Most combo stands have a "rocky mountain leg" that can level the stand.

We picked up several almost new CST/Berger brand "Universal Contractors Aluminum Tripod" 's on eBay a while back for like $30 each. Have had 250# on them several times with no problems. Great for holding jibs, sliders, platforms, etc.
Here's a link to a current listing -

Thanks for the ebay link...
Does the tripod fit a 100mm bowl type head? This would be great if it can hold a head with 100mm bowl. I have a "hurcules" head from kesslercrane.com which has a 100mm half bowl. The head also is capable of holding at least 200lbs.
The surveyors tripod and my Hercules head would be great if it could mount a 100mm. Let me know if that tripod is capable of that.
Thanks
Can you take the bowl off?
