To get that real movie feel the letter box should be at 2.39:1.....but how is this done?

I want to pull it down to that size but I don't know how? What are you guys doing?

I'm thinking of making a alpha matte(two larger black bars) in photo shop then throwing it in my editing time line which will extend the letter box for the image, making it look like I shot it like that....

Is this how it is done? because when I watch behind the scenes in movies their external monitors have safe guard lines? or is that scope done from the matte box on the front of the camera.

Could anyone help me on this?

thanks a lot

Easiest would be to create safeguard lines on a monitor or viewfinder to help frame the shot for a "wider" widescreen.

As far as post, it is typically a matter of exporting the video to the wider dimensions and cropping the top and bottom overbleed -- not difficult for most editing applications these days. You can usually render to any custom screen size you want depending on the format.

For DVD, cropping the video should give you the letterbox effect when you export to a widescreen preset (depending on the software you use)

Put gaff tape on an LCD and frame for 2.39 then use a widescreen matte in post. (watch out for gooey mess if you leave it on too long)

I created a aspect guide clip that you can use to visualize different aspect ratios and figure out where to place the tape on your LCD:

http://www.misterfrag.com/AspectGuides.zip (9.5MB)

It's a five second 720/24P clip with -12dB tone (in case you need to check audio levels).

If all else fails, use the Widescreen Video Filter in Final Cut Pro =).
