Creating Blood on a punching fist

I have a scene where an actor is punching someone else...
i need to make it look as though there is blood on his hand. I tried creating an adjustment layer with a mask and a tinted red color correction to follow his hand, it worked to an extent but it didn't look good.
How would you all do it?

I think shooting it practically would be the best option, but since it sounds like you're already done shooting and on to post production, maybe the reverse of this:

yeah I saw that tutorial. unfortunately the hand is very fast moving, so its really hard to make it look realistic. you are right and it should have been shot that way, lucky me though Im only the editor

Maybe your best bet then, if it's fast moving is to just paint it in by hand, and motion blur it a lot.
