AE not opening

Maybe this is more a question of a general software problem and not AE specific, but my AE won't open up.

I get the window, and then it says something like "initializing user interface" and then it just freezes.

I've tried opening a couple of projects, all with the same result. I restarted the computer, did everything I could think of, but still, nothing.

I'm a little panicky since I did a LOT of work in AE and now apparently I don't have access to it.

Did anyone encounter the same problem or can suggest a solution?

Your preferences may be corrupted.

To restore default preference settings, hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift while the application is starting.
