I have a friend that is climbing Mt. Everest and is claiming that he is the first person ever to shoot HD on one side of the mountain and he figures he will have TV studios fighting over each other for the rights to air his footage. He figures he will make tons of money off this Doc shoot, maybe in the million's ($$$).

The camera he is using is the Sony Z7U and he is shooting on tape, lots of tape. So can you really shoot HD on tape? Is this even possible?

Heres what it says on bhphoto about the z7u

The HDV format, used in the HVR-Z7U allows high definition recording on standard MiniDV tapes. This is accomplished by using the very popular MPEG-2 compression technique used in many applications, including DVDs and satellite television.

Well hdv is still hd, granted I dont think any hdv camera can shoot 1080p but 1080i is still HD. However, unless he is the guy in the new HD Video pro magazine, he will not be the first to climb everest and shoot in HD. So his hopes of people fighting over the footage are slim to none.
