Yes there are a few new ones floating around. Even at the Steadicam booth, I had never seen the version of a monitor they used and the guy said they just had them made for them. One of these had an actually 1080 res screen: TV Logic or Totevision (which all may have been around and I am not sure if "Totevision" is the right name). It seemed like there are more in the high end market.

Does Totevision have a new one out? The 7" 703HD has been around for a while and works nicely with the HVX, but it'd be interesting if they've made a new one specifically for this market .

Sorry, I meant "Transvideo." High end and very nice.

Also j-Labs had a 1080 res screen. 15.4" amazing quality and performance geared for the high end market. Price is $6500.

Also found a 4.8" SWIT prototype monitor on display. 16x9 aspect with variety of battery options like any DV batt out there. Used it with the Multi Rig Pro and it was sweet, of course EX1 users probably don't need it, but I have a Canon XH-A1. Very portable, will be released in June. Looked like component, composite and HD SDI, but not sure as they don;t speak much English at the booth.

I saw the Carrion at the RedRock booth, the picture was fantastic. as were the controls. It seemed a bit bulky, but otherwise was pretty awesome for a list of $1945 or so (I think) And thats including HDSDI. It's 8.4", which is why I thought it was bulky.

I also saw the newest Nebtek NEB70HD (and HDS), they now have 600nit analoge HD for $1875. The picture was fantastic. The HDSDI version is $2345. Both come with a battery mount, either canon, sony, jvc, pani, anton bauer, IDX, or PAG. It also has a flip function, and better yet, 4 levels of edge sharpening to assist in focusing.

I still hate that IKAN.

I talked with Dennis of Cinevate, he said they may be working on a sub $1000 LCD in the next 6mo to a year that will be 8.4" and have full 720P native resolution.

I saw the monitors on the steadicams, they are very nice.

There were several other places that had 7" monitors, but I got the impression that they were all WAY out of my price range.

Varizomm/Swit has some crap. It's cheap, it's crap.

oh yes, forgot about the Carrion. Great monitor.

I use mine for travel (Ikan), so light and small is more important than big and expensive (for use with framing for a 35mm). Should have mentioned my preference.

Actually at the SWIT booth, I was pretty impressed with their brand-new not-yet-released HD-SDI monitors.

Everyone is talking about new cameras but I am also more interested in the new LDC monitors. Come on, why does this market develop so slow? I really hope 1280x720 monitors with proper focus assist functions will be out soon.

So far only the Panasonic's are really good, but also very expensive.

Marshall has a new monitor coming out that looks very attractive. It is similar to our fave 7" Marshall for the HVX200 but this new one is built into a smaller case design (looks like hard plastic as opposed to metal). It's not the rackmount style. It has loads of features, including programable user buttons and a backside port for optional HD-SDI (or HDMI) input and ouput connections. The price is $999 and it comes out in August [details subject to change without notice].

Of course, Luis Sinibaldi's Carrion was on display at the Red Rock booth. He did a great job with that one. Only sorry we didn't get to connect at the show!

TVLogic also had some really nice monitors loaded with features. There was a 7" one for $2500 and a 9" one for $4000. Pricey, but they were beautiful.

Do you know if it has the same screen resolution?

Not sure DC if you are talking about the new, very small prototype monitors Marshall had. Anyone see those? No blue gun, but another small monitor like the one at the Swit booth.

Shawn, I agree the Swit booth was a surprise. I hooked up my XH-A1 to the small one because I was at the DV TEC booth close by (with the Multi Rig Pro) and the guys at the booth from Swit went crazy. They took pictures and just thought it was a hoot (guess no one has hooked it up to a rig). It was composite but still looked good.

I forgot to mention that the Carrion is 1024x768 native resolution.

I can't say for certain, but I think so or thereabouts.

Yeah, those are probably the ones. There was no blue gun BUT . . . the monitor has four Function buttons that can be assigned. I was flipping through the menu system and it seems that many functions were not yet implemented. With some manipulation, I was able to find a setting to turn the screen blue. I'm thinking a blue gun can be implemented and assigned to a Function button. Also, there was a USB connection for connecting to a computer - makes for easy firmware updating. :)

I told the Marshall guy you can throw blue gel over it and get very close. I like the small monitors for travel or a second client monitor (you keep the nice one :-).

Just for the record. my monitor Starts ad $1520 with no HD-SDI and $1820 for 1 HD-SDI in/out. it also supports RED One camera menus (only one that I know in the market that does this) and has adjustable battery plates.

DC, yeah sorry we didn't meet at nab. I was mostly showing off the monitor. I even took it at the phantom booth and they Sales guy thought it was worth $4500 after seeing the image and hearing the options. So they might carry it on their rentals. (I'll talk to them about it)

Florisvaneck, I've put my 8.4" against the $4890 (msrp.) panasonic, and I have to tell you, me and a few others (red users) thought the Carrion Looked slighly better. (The panasonic has waveform and mine doesn't) but also mine has tons of thing the panasonic doesn't have. zoom, image flip, easy battery plate change, lighter in weight, better anti-reflective coating, etc...

Also the new HPX-170 from panasonic has waveform monitor, and seems like the new cameras coming on the market are having that option, which will make the option on a monitor obsolete.

Thanks for your reply siniarch.

I am considering the Panasonic BT-LH80W, the new Nebtek and the Carrion c with Anton Bauer or IDX mount. I really like your monitor and read good things about it. What I like from the Panasonic is the built-in waveform monitor. But you are right about it becoming adopted on new cameras. What I like about your monitor is that it is better in outdoor daylight situations (from what I have read from multiple users). I guess focus in red is a nice feature but with 1,024x768 not that needed. In terms of price your monitor wins from the other two. I still would like to know what happens when I have a problem with my monitor. Can I send it back to you in that case so you can check it (and fix it, maybe at additional expense) and fix it. It looks very decent and I don't expect it to happen, but you never know. Also, can I mount the Carrion on my camera? If so, which mounting arm do you recommend?

Many thanks in advance.

Hey florisvaneck,

Thanks again for your interest in the Carrion. What happens if there is a problem with the monitor is I fix it. I haven't established a warranty policy yet, but as a new guy I need to make sure that my clients are happy. Otherwise, I will get a bad rep and no one will buy from me. To that end I intend to do my best to fix everyones problems.

I am not in it to lose money either, so If you open up the unit, then the warranty is void. Meaning I won't feel like I should take care of the problem without charging for it. But if its a manufacturing defect then its on me.

I have found some of the most expensive and trusted components and I have very good faith that they will work properly. But also understand that I'm just starting out. If you want track record, Panasonic, has been around much longer and is able to take a hit better than I can. On the other hand, note that my HVX burned the firewireport just after warranty was over and I had to cough up $379. So even they get faulty or prone to damage parts.

As for the arm, I use a Heavy Duty Noga arm (I purchase it from Film tools for $185 I believe) but my friend has used it with the Zamerican Arm from Zacuto and loves it.

Thank you again,
Luis

We saw the Carrion at Redrock's booth, and were duly impressed. Luis has built a killer solution for production use. It looks rock-solid. Here's a video segment on it: http://www.freshdv.com/2008/04/nab-2008-carrion.html

And for those looking to compare to other options, Swit had a few displays with HD-SDI, etc. See here about halfway through our Mixed Veggies video segment: http://www.freshdv.com/2008/04/nab-2008-mixed.html

I was holding out for the Panny, but I think my next purchase will be a couple of Louis' Carrion's. I just wish it had the focus in red thing. But hey, at half the price of the Pannny, and it does have the zoom feature, I think I'm going to go with Louis.

Thanks Brad.

Also FYI:
the 8.4" Panasonic does not have the Focus in Red feature. Its only on their new monitor which is 7.9" (I believe) and the resolution is 800x480.

On a 1024x768 screen its not that crucial since it is so much sharper.

I received my Carrion A model monitor about 5 weeks ago and have finished testing it in a variety of situations.

First thing I can say is that this is a beautifully made product. At first I questioned my sanity buying from a guy 3000 miles away that is building his own monitor. I tend to bite the bullet and get the best possible gear for what I do (mostly corporate video). But after Luis called me and spent at least thirty minutes or more talking monitors and life, I am convinced he'll do everything he can to treat people right. He sure has put an enormous amount of effort into building this monitor.

As for my field tests, I just came off of a day of shooting in bright mid-day sun and am stunned to report just how well you can see the screen. I really thought it would be washed out. Focusing and framing were a snap and the picture was incredible. Using the zoom button is easy for critical focus, but most of the time I didn't need it. The monitor also starts fast and automatically finds the signal in seconds. I've used it with my HVX and Sony A1U and had no problems. Seeing the picture after using just the built in screens for so long, it was a reality check to see what was really coming out of the camera. Since I've gotten the Carrion I have also switched to my own scene file for lots of dynamic range to better tweak in post.

On the HVX, I had it mounted on a Noga Arm that supports up to 6 lbs. I was using it with the Panasonic battery plate and two batteries. I felt like this Noga Arm was a little weak for the application. I had the arm screwed into the side of a RedRock plate and rails. It stayed in place and never fell over (even afer carrying it around), but I still don't have that warm and fuzzy with the Noga and this much weight. However, for 99% of my work on a tripod it will be fine. The Noga seems to have gained grip after being used also.

I also had the monitor mounted on a Camera Turret Jib using the optional monitor plate they make. The setup looked and worked amazing. I normally use my laptop and DVRack, but the Carrion of course keeps real time focus where the laptop cannot. Also, I've never had so many people comment about my rig. It just flat out looked great, even with that tiny A1U out on the end of the jib. I was shooting a rock show and people behind me were watching the monitor and not the show.

I've also used it for editing with Sony Vegas Pro (my Nvidia Quadro 1500FX card has component HD out) and here again it worked well. Color setup is easy thru the menu system, and quality of the picture is exceptional. Really helps to have an accurate moritor for color correction.

I'll let Luis share is knowledge about the engineering of his monitor. I can just say that as a field guy, this monitor works well, is built well, and helps me make better pictures. All in all, a great production tool at a more than competitive price.

Dear Mark G,

Thanks so much for your kind words. I keep getting emails or word of how good the monitor is working for them. I tell you, it feels great that I can help people become better film makers even if its just a little. :)

Much appreciated it.

I also want to buy one.

But Luis needs to send me his bank details (sent you an e-mail). I can't use PayPal! I am going for the Carrion C model with Anton Bauer adapter plate and powertap cable (possible right?). The FreshDV footage convinced me that this is the right monitor for me.

The only thing I have to find out is where to get a proper mounting arm that works and protects this wonderful monitor from hitting the ground.

When is the next shipment Luis?

florisvaneck

I am still looking at the mounting options. I need to be able to mount the LCD to the camera for both handheld and tripod shooting. But with the Heavy Duty Noga arm, I cannot attach it to the camera while it is in the tripod? I use a Canon XL-H1 on a Sachtler DV6SB head with Miller Solo DV legs and canon tripod mounting plate.

I have been looking at the Zacuto System. I like modularity and it looks very durable.

On the Redrock site:
http://www.redrockmicro.com/micro35.html

I see may people mounting various types of screens (even the big Panasonic once) via a mounting arm to the hot shoe adapter? Is this smart? It would think the hot shoe is not that solid/durable to mount a 3,2lbs screen to it but I might be wrong if I see all those people doing it that way.

Florisvaneck,
I didn't get the e-mail about getting my bank info. I'll get that to you. please send me a PM with an email address that will definitely be read just by you. :)

As for the Noga arm, i use the heavy duty one and it works. I hear the Zamerican arm from Zacuto is great also.

you could try something like this. http://www.vfgadgets.com/HDVbracket.htm

or if I understand correctly the noga into the shoe mount. which with my redrock base plate it works great. its just not far enough to where I want my monitor when shoulder mounted.

The Carrion is however the undisputed winner unless judging only by volume of the thing or it's weight with heavy batteries on it's plates
hands down, indisputably superior performance numbers... and you'll never appreciate in the same way ever again all those other monitors on which a the angle at which it's display is viewable isn't as extreme as it is with the Carrion.

USLatinConent,

I sure hope so! I am still waiting for Luis to provide me with some details so I can order the monitor asap. I am going to run a powertap cable so I don't have to put on the battery on the monitor itself. And the monitor is much lighter then the comparable Panasonic 1,024x768 monitor. And slightly heavier than the new Nebtek.

USLatin
04-28-2008, 03:50 AM
Exactly, and you are doing it the right way too. The noga arm is good enough and I hear the Zacuto arm is delightful. The Carrion may be large, but not nearly as heavy as you'd expect.

florisvaneck
04-28-2008, 04:05 AM
I am going to buy this combination:

http://www.zacuto.com/Zacuto_Indie_kit.htm

I can mount the monitor on the handles or on the double mount at the back. I can't wait to use this combination with the Carrion monitor. Finally proper camera handling, and finally a proper screen for focus en exposure evaluation (XL-H1 LCD is crap).
