This sounds really interesting (as posted at ProVideoCoalition (http://http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/nab08)):
A full on “hat trick” for Red this morning with 3 major announcements.
Welcom to the RED Ray.
• Optical disk drive
• Play back 4K video from the RED ONE
• 3K video from Scarlet
• HD formats from RED Disc and RED Express media
• R3D RAW files from CompactFlash
• 5K video from the new EPIC isn’t supported, yet(?).
Bye bye Blu-Ray?

I don't get it. The one thing I really expected from RED this year was a 4K Display. Instead we get a 4K DVD player? What good does that do? I'm all for the RED Revolution, but that seems like cart before horse to me.

Good point. Hm.
Is this drive targeted at regular consumers as well? Or is it just a Red "post" tool? I mean, will we be watching Pirate of the Carribean 7 on Red Ray?

But would that even make a difference? Think about how big a 4k display would have to be to be effective and how close you've have to sit near it to really see the benefits of 4k.
Having a device that can take it and scale it makes more sense to me.

A projector that can project a 120" image from 6 feet away seems like the soloution.

It is expected to come it at under $1k If nothing is new by tomorrow I'll get more info on the media. The Red booth was packed at 9am so getting info was hit or miss.

The 4K RED-RAY uses standard "red" laser DVD media. The delivery codec is so efficient we can provide more than 2 hours of 4K plus audio on one dual layer single sided DVD.
check it.

That information makes things interesting. Perhaps there is use for RED RAY afterall.
