Here are some BTS PHOTOS from our two-day shoot (May 3rd-4th). I don't want to give away too much so I won't show any of the "juicy" tidbits just yet...but this will hopefully give you an idea! Screen grabs coming soon...check back later!

Yeah, I wanted to give a big thanks to Chris Messineo for the MoviePoet.com website!!! That place is a GREAT resource for anyone who is a filmmaker and is looking for ideas or inspiration! I have contacted several different screenwriters about scripts I've read on there and they have all been very helpful and willing to collaborate.
I have read several posts by people who are struggling to come up with ideas, especially for these festivals. CHECK OUT MOVIEPOET.COM!
And Don Riemer has been a big help and I hope we do his script justice!

Well, it all starts tomorrow! And as usual I have a full page To Do list that all has to be done before then. You know, the usual.
Pick up lights for the DP.
Collect last minute props.
Chase down actors to ask for things you've already asked for ten times.
Get your random gear collection together.
Call and make sure all the people that "promised" they were going to "bring this" or "do that" are actually still "bringing this" and "doing that".
Find liquid nitrogen.
Find something to put it in.
You know...the usual! I'm sure everyone has shot or is about to shoot is in the same boat or is heading that way. Guess I just needed to vent a little! :furious3:
See, doesn't that feel better? :engel017:
In spite of all the craziness of production a lot of things have really fallen into place and I am grateful for that. We have done rehearsals with actors, a pre-light with the DP...all kinds of helpful things that are usually a luxury I do not get.
So, hopefully sometime early next week we will have some screen grabs, BTS stills, a poster and so on!
Keep up the good work everyone! I expect some quality stuff from all of you... :D
Ciao.

We wrapped shooting on Sunday evening and got everything we needed!
Ahh...what a good feeling... :D
It was a bit stressful heading into the weekend. A very central prop showed up the night before the shoot looking way less "awesome" than I had hoped it would. Major stress! So the morning after we spent the first hour and a half "fixing" it. It ended up looking absolutely amazing on camera fortunately.
We were also scheduled to have a short day on Saturday and wrap around 2:00pm...so naturally we didn't wrap until around 6:00pm. After seeing how long the shoot took on Saturday I was really worried about getting everything shot on Sunday. Fortunately our DP had a great setup running by Day 2 and it really sped us up.
Late in the day we went and stole some shots a second location with our actors while our crew stayed behind and redressed the set for another scene. We got back just as they were finishing up and it worked out perfectly!
Anyway, hopefully we will have some screen grabs up soon....
We were shooting the HVX-200 with the Redrock Micro (with the Micro X flip adapter). The images looked great but it just GOBBLED up the light! Which made our very small location quite warm... :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG I am considering selling the Redrock before our next production and getting the Letus Extreme to help with the light loss. I would be curious to hear anyone's opinion who has used both...
For those of you who have not shot yet...best of luck!!!
Ciao.

Yeah...had the AC/fans/etc. all turned off so it also got a little warm! With the Redrock on there and the flip adapter we were pumping light on there like crazy. It looked great but it was like a really busy sauna in there. :D

NEW MOVIE POSTER ON PAGE ONE! :dankk2:
Just uploaded a movie poster. Playing around with a title change...any suggestions? I know you may have no idea what the movie is about. But do you have a preference between:
"The Small Multiple"
or
"The Selector"
Do you think one is catchier than the other? More intriguing? Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

Thanks for the input guys! Title suggestions duly noted...I think I was mostly being lazy and not wanting to figure out how to make "The Small Multiple" fit on the poster with cool typography etc. "The Selector" was much shorter and easier... :D
Guess I'll stop being lazy and go fix it.
Also, I wasn't sure if "The Small Multiple" would mean anything to people who don't know the story. I guess I don't care as long as it is 'intriguing' enough to get people to watch.
Thanks again!

This is looking especially awesome! Especially after the above statement. In a generic sense, that's exactly what I hope to achieve as well. Those kinds of stories are some of my favorites.
Also, the title is very interesting. I'm guesing that you have an engineering background?
pia12254
05-17-2008, 12:03 AM
Well...I don't have an engineering background...but I suppose the writer (Don Riemer) might! To be completely honest I really have no idea what the script is about...it all went right over my head... ;)
In all seriousness though...the script originally fascinated me because it was a "thinker". Of course, considering that is me talking it might not be saying that much! :undecided
A little off topic (but hey, it is my own thread so I can hijack it if I wanna) but I am at the GI Film Festival in Washington, D.C. this weekend for another film of mine. Got to meet some really neat people including Mr. Stephen Baldwin who seemed like a nice fella.

Hey Simon and Jon...thanks for the compliments!
I totally agree...there are some amazing looking films coming out for this fest! Even the international pieces like "Unzeit" and "Vicis" look really, really impressive!!!
Man, this festival should be getting more publicity than a lot of other "offline" festivals out there! Seriously... I am all for the idea that Mark with Fat Monster Films put out there about taking the Top 10 films and screening them somewhere in L.A.
It would be a great opportunity to get some press coverage and awareness of the amazing quality of product that "DVXUsers" are producing!
Ok. I'll get off my soapbox now... :D

The edit is locked!!! Yay! I feel so happy I could just... :nads: ...kick someone in the nuts and throw up the rock sign!
In celebration of getting the edit locked I am going to upload some more pictures from the production! Although there are quite a few effects shots left to create as well as some color correction and general polishing...I have locked the actual edit and sent it off to the Composer and the Sound Designer.
Don't know if I had mentioned this earlier but those two positions are being filled by:
Composer - Herman "The Man" Witkam
Sound Designer - Brad Semenoff (This is the closest I will ever come to competing with the Fat Monster team...by borrowing the Sound Designer from their short...) :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
And now for some pictures...we will start off with something beautiful. A screen grab of our lead actress:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5811/1212022631.jpg
Followed by something ugly...the least flattering shot of me "Directing" I've ever received:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5811/1212022692.jpg
And then of course something creepy...our DP wearing shorts, a dress shirt and a tie...
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5811/1212022681.jpg
Does this void our production insurance policy!?
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5811/1212022619.jpg
That's it for now! Looking forward to seeing all of the films in this festival...seems to be quite a MASSIVE competition this go around!
Peace out.

I was born there, lived there til I was 5, then moved to Frisco, but we were in Denton every other weekend almost through high school. My grandparents and all my aunts and uncles, best friend, etc. were there.
After high school it was it was Austin for undergrad, NY for 2 years, Seattle for grad school, New Orleans for 3 years and now NY again.
I usually tell people that Denton is where Rocky Horror Picture Show is set.

You're gonna give us a bad name! ;-)
Just finished listening to some of the music from Herman and the sound design from Brad. Man, it is really inspiring to see people who are so talented in the audible realm bring something to life! I know people say audio is 50% (or more) of a film. But I don't even think that does it justice!
If you watch a scene, be it romantic, horror, action whatever...and you watch it once without the sound on and once with...the "feeling" of the film is compounded! It doesn't just "add another 50%". It really makes or breaks a film!
Anyway, I was just excited about the work they are doing and wanted to share. :)
Brad S.

I'm glad that you liked the work so far. I told you that creating the sound for the Multiple entirely out of chicken clucks was a good idea! I'll see if I can add a few more instances of the Wilhelm scream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdbYsoEasio) in there. :)

Hello everyone,
As many of you, I've been working to finish up this film by the deadline (along with the help of Brad and Herman).
Wanted to post some updates on the progress of the film. One of the things I enjoy most about other peoples films is watching it progress and seeing the steps they've taken.
So, I will be posting a series of images/explanations on how "The Small Multiple" came to be.
I think it will look something like:
General Editing Breakdown
Sound Design Process (with input from Brad Semenoff)
FX Shots Process
...and anything else I can think of! :)
If anyone has any specific questions/input/insight feel free to chime in.
To start with, here is the Final Cut Pro timeline of the edit:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5811/1212883955.jpg
This is the locked edit. The first edit was around 10 minutes long. Eeek!!!
You can see the audio mess that Brad received and had to work with! Working with a Composer and Sound Designer has been an interesting process. Being required to "lock" the edit in order to get it to them was a REALLY good discipline for me!
Normally I would spend WAY too much time tweaking something to death. Knowing I could not tweak once I sent it off really helped me to make solid decisions and just go with it.
After the locked edit was off to the Sound Designer I started working on the effects shots...
Mark Harris

I think those shots in the timeline look beautiful. Love the depth of frame in both, the objects/people in the foreground, something I was really working on this time in mine.
Really looking forward to this.

what do you want your thread title to be?
pia12254
06-07-2008, 08:57 PM
Hey Jack,
Thanks for noticing that! I just wanted the title to simply be: The Small Multiple
(Get rid of the part that says, "(Working Title)")
If it could be bold that would be great!
I appreciate it!

Honestly, all the grabs I see of your short, even the two in the timeline really make me want to see the finished product. I wouldn't say they look the coolest of all of the entries, but it's one of the very few entries I would say the grabs look very cool but not over stylized. A hard line to walk.

Hey Alex (I saw it on your website...I'm not stalking you, I promise!),
First of all, I'm really impressed by the number of films you have done! Keep it up man!
Thanks for the comments on the film. It is definitely not the "coolest looking" as you said. :) I totally agree in that sense! The last film I did was more in that category...big sets, big locations, epic shots etc.
Unfortunately, I was not really pleased with the acting...or the story for that matter. So in this film I really wanted to focus more on the quality of the acting as well as the telling of the story. Hopefully both will be at a level that grabs the viewers attention.
I'll be posting a few grabs for one of the effects shots in the film...probably later today. So check back!
Thanks man!

Since we're sharing screenshots, I thought that I'd share a couple of mine.
The first is a screenshot of my Pro Tools Dialog edit session for "The Small Multiple." The top 8 tracks are the original OMF that Daniel gave me for the locked picture. Below that are the room tones that were recorded on set. The rest are the Dialog, production FX, VO and tracks that I don't want playing in the final mix but don't want to get rid of.
This next screenshot is my Pro Tools Backgrounds and Sound FX edit session for "The Small Multiple."
The top green(ish) tracks are the backgrounds and the bottom red tracks are the sound FX. As you can see in the screenshot, there are a fairly large amount of sound fx, especially about 3/4 of the way through the movie (hmm… I wonder what's going on there?). Anyway, I can't really talk about the sound design process without revealing too much about the film. I can at least say that I tried to make it big when it needs to be big, subtle when the story calls for that, and I try to work with Herman's score so that we're not competing.
I think that it's worked out well and I can't wait to hear what people think about the film.

Just curious, how did you guys manage the giant file transferring?
pia12254

For the gigantic file transfers Brad was generous enough to set up a shared FTP for us to upload/download from. It worked beautifully! It helps that the finished film is only 6-minutes long....
I wanted to repost his pics embedded in the thread in case there are people like me who are sometimes too lazy to download/open documents! :D (It really showcases how much time/effort Brad has put into this project)

I don't know if it was generosity but rather guilt. I'm a bit of a pain and I kept asking Daniel for different files (can I have the alts for this line, can you upload the new picture, got any free software that I can have, etc.) so it would have cost him too much and taken too long to Fed Ex everything to me.
Mark Harris
06-09-2008, 11:55 AM
How big were your files? How many pieces did you break the film into?
joe and I shared files too, but our uncompressed film was like 32 gigs. Not viable via FTP.
Brad S.
06-09-2008, 12:26 PM
32 Gigs!! Wow!! I think altogether Daniel gave me about 2 Gigs worth of stuff. I'd email him stereo MP3s as demoes of the work in progress and I'll give him 48khz, 24 bit audio files for the final, but that won't be too big of a file size. He originally posted an H.264 Quicktime for me to work off of and the OMF was about 700 MB. OF course for audio I don't need the absolute best picture quality, I just need to see it.
Mark Harris
06-09-2008, 12:34 PM
Ah yeah, for audio we did the same. But Joe also did the CC and for that needed full res files. Thus the 32 gig.
Yeah, when he did sound work, and while I was cutting we shared via our servers.
pia12254
06-09-2008, 02:17 PM
Wow...! How did you get him 32gigs worth of material? Did you send multiple data-DVD's, a harddrive, etc.?
I think it is fascinating how many people on this board collaborate and how much better it makes the final product! And it is amazing that much of this collaboration takes place over multiple states, time zones and even continents...
Makes me wonder what life would be like without the internet! :)
Daniel
Mark Harris

I sent him multiple DVDs.
but next time I want to try this. I will switch to FCP, which he has on his end, and if we keep duplicates of the footage on each end, I wonder if we can just swap project files back and forth. I wonder if that will work...
pia12254
06-09-2008, 02:28 PM
Hmm...I've thought about trying that as well. If you ever try it let us know how that goes!
I think it would work, in theory, as long as you don't reference any files he doesn't have and the file structure always stays the same (which is why it would be a challenge for me)! :D

Alright, time for a little "How-not-to" lesson! :)
There are a couple of simple effects shots in this film. Because I get stressed during production when we seem to be falling behind schedule (which is pretty much all the time), I sometimes make stupid compromises. For example, I knew I was going to need to composite my actors separately on the background but I decided NOT to set up the greenscreen behind them because we were in a rush.
Fortunately, my AD had the foresight to at least make me shoot a clean plate as well as each actor separately. This helped me retain some of my sanity but I should have still used the greenscreen.
But because I didn't I had to do hours of rotoscoping until my eyeballs looked like this:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5811/1213114147.jpg
Anyway, here is a look at my rotoscoping progress in After Effects. It is not incredibly detailed due to the nature of the final shot (shaky as hell) and the fact that certain parts of each actor are obscured.
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5811/1213027532.jpg
So, just a note of warning...if you are ever in a rush don't be stupid like me and neglect to set up the greenscreen. It will save you hours of time, bloodshot eyes and callouses on your mouse finger...
jeremytuttle
06-10-2008, 10:51 AM
Wow, yeah rotoscoping is not fun. Too bad you couldn't get that screen green up, time is always the enemy in low budget movies isn't it.
pia12254
06-10-2008, 12:43 PM
Yeah, time is always the enemy...but stupidity was the culprit on this one! Also, lack of planning. I hadn't thought through exactly what I wanted the effect shot to look like so I wasn't 100% sure how I needed to set it up. That is probably what led to me just doing nothing and then paying for it in the end! :)
Here is another screen grab of a particle simulation I am playing around with to incorporate into the effects shot. I bought the Particular plug-in a while back but hadn't really gotten to play around with it and use it much until now:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5811/1213027557.jpg
And here is the final comp with all of the layers/goodies etc. added in!
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5811/1213027578.jpg
Looking at it now as a still from a screen grab it looks pretty lame...but when it is in motion with all of the sound effects and stuff it is a bit more interesting (hopefully). :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Excellent. The short I wanted to see the most and it certainly delivered on all fronts. Flawless cgi, amazing production design, and a great score. The voice-over was the perfect tone and blended great. I loved the concept and you pulled it off great in a very believable way. Very good lighting as well.
The only weak moment I could find after watching it twice was that "let me work" moment which seemed good, but just a little forced imho.
Overall, one of my absolute favorites.

OHMYGAW that´s awsome. How do you manage to put so much in 6 minutes? Somehow it feels like half an hour.

I was always a big fan of this script so I was really looking forward to the film.
I loved it. Very well done. I thought it looked great and the pacing was perfect. I thought the actors did a good job, although I wish they were a bit older (as I think that works better for this story).
Still, this was great. Kudos to Herman for the awesome score.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I kind of wish we had a little more "time" as the 6-minutes really forced us to cut out huge chunks of the performance that I think rounds out the characters a bit more. But hopefully we were able to tell a concise but interesting story in the 6-minutes we did have! :)
Chris, I had the exact same thought process regarding the age of the characters. The first few times I read it I definitely thought older. But for me having a younger (but hopefully still believable) couple makes the ending more bittersweet.
Also, we had some really strong older actors audition for the male role but none for the female (short notice I guess). So that helped make the decision a bit easier too! :D
I appreciate it fellas!

Greetings.... my first posting on this site, and I guess I feel like an intruder. I've been "lurking" for a while, and I can see this is a fantastic online community. Please permit me to offer a few words...
I'm the writer of "The Small Multiple," and at this moment it would be fair to say I am one happy camper. Hot damn! Kudos are clearly in order.
When Daniel first asked about the script, I was pretty happy. Any writer would be. But now, seeing the amazing result, I mean... words fail me.
My favorite things, in no particular order.....
Casting - I had pictured Frank and Cathy as much older, but given the strength of these performances it doesn't matter at all. The actors are excellent. The guy playing Frank really nails it.
Production design - Excellent mood and visual tone. Love the transitions. The stark visual contrast between THEN and NOW is precisely what I had in mind.
Music and Sound Design - Within the first 20 seconds of this movie, I was thinking, "I love that music...." and throughout, the audio bed is superb. Brian Eno got nothin' on these cats. First rate work.
Prop and Effects Work for The "Selector" - Now, this was just a stellar job of interpreting something that the script describes in only the most basic terms. The decision to present this machine with a set of killer close-ups, rather than try to show any sort of meaningful whole, was really inspired. Each shot is perfect: gritty, down and dirty, mysterious... right on the money. I don't think anyone, at any budget, could have done better.
So, many thanks to Daniel and his team for this fine work. I would love to see an extended cut at some point.
Best to you all,
Don Riemer

hello everyone. i was part of the crew that made 'the small multiple.' just like you, this was my time to see it. the turn around has been frantic. we finished shooting this film on a brand new hvx in hd about a month ago. daniel's been holed up in his house editing it - in between submitting for grant money! - and i've barely heard from him. but he got it all together: edit, music, voice recording. and it's really good.
i'm especially impressed at how coherent the film. that may sound bad, but when you're making a movie about time, that takes place all in ONE room, it is NOT easy to make everything coherent. but daniel did it. very impressive.
kudos to mr riemer, who suffered through daniel's supercilious demeanor and was able to work w/him anyways. an imaginative script that led to an imaginative movie.
everybody should know (hopefully someone hasn't gone over this), the room we shot this film in was not that hole in the ground. that was in the running as a possible location, but didn't make the cut. that was actually a real bomb shelter, but it was 6 x 6 feet basically ---impossible. so we ended up shooting in a much bigger room --- 10 x 7! i tell you, it was cramped. i can now identify everyone on crew by their specific body odor. does that make me a rodent?
but it was a great shoot and we got it done in what?...2 days. daniel's got that work fast mojo.

Daniel, really nice movie. Thanks for sharing it. This seemed to be one of those where the final output was greater than the sum of the parts, by that I mean it could have been just another typical time machine story but it delved a bit deeper than most. The movie fit perfectly with the scope of the story. This one goes in the "Good" folder, it's a keeper.:thumbup:

SPOILER
A not so quick question about the story, Say "world falling apart" is A, and the "happy world" is B. In world B where his wife ends up, who is the husband? Same guy as in A, I understand that, but how does he know the woman who just "appeared" in his arms? Or what happened to his wife that grew up in world B?
(Typing this I'm really feeling like a cult film nerd)
pia12254
06-21-2008, 12:55 PM
That's a good question...hmm...
I think Don, who wrote the script, has a better understanding of how all of this might "theoretically" work. I'll see if I can get him on here to give his thoughts on the matter. It is something I thought through and discussed at great length with my co-producer just for the sake of it...interesting quandary.
My thought would be that there are an infinite number of parallel universes to choose from (this is explained beautifully in the dialogue that Don wrote that we unfortunately had to cut due to time constraints). So, in theory, the guy in World B was simultaneously working on something similar where the result was he and Cathy being together. He just doesn't know that it is the Cathy from the parallel universe World A. Don't know if that makes sense or not...that's just my justification!
If someone else has a better theory I would love to hear it as this type of thing fascinates me!
Ciao.
Don Riemer
06-21-2008, 01:35 PM
Gohanto,
I'll try to answer your question about what happens to Cathy.... though a serious philosophy wonk would surely be better at it than I.
The idea behind Frank's invention, The Selector, is based on actual discoveries in various branches of science: 11-dimensional space, the brain as quantum computer, and most importantly, the idea of an infinite number of universes existing in parallel with our own. I didn't have to make up any of this.
My speculation comes into play with the idea that Frank could achieve some sort of insight, some cosmic epiphany, by observing the emotions on Cathy's face, captured in photographs taken over time. By approaching these photos as graphical data (a small multiple) Frank's insight lets him understand how to build The Selector, which uses the brain's quantum states to flip people into any desired parallel universe. Pure hokum, but it makes a cool story.
It's important to understand the real weight of the phrase, "infinite number of universes." Humans have a hard time with enormous numbers. The age of the earth, the number of species on the planet, the distance to the nearest galaxy... these numbers, though measurable, are so vast that few people can really get their heads around them. Now try dealing with the idea of INFINITE. You're talking about an ENDLESS multitude of possibilities, each one separated by a degree of subtlety so small that we can never grasp it. Frank couldn't. That's where he slipped up.
Because of Frank's error (he shoulda done all the math, dammit), Cathy ends up in a universe that's not the same one where Frank went during his test. Instead, she ends up in a universe where the physics permitted another Frank to make the jump with her, at the same moment. So, Cathy A ends up with Frank B. And neither one of them will ever have any idea that anything went wrong. In all other respects, The Selector worked as planned. Frank A, unfortunately, gets left behind, with only booze and static on the radio for company.
At least, that's what I had in mind. Hope this helps! Now I need a drink....

I watched The Small Multiple again this morning and found it even more engaging. Brilliant work on so many counts. I am extremely impressed by your talents and those of your cast/crew. I thought I understood it the first time through, but all the "explaining" on this thread has got me second-guessing myself.
I didn't feel any sort of need to explain how Frank B knew who the woman was, I kinda took it like "The Prestige" POTENTIAL SPOILERS, BEWARE with Hugh Jackman's character, with both the "clone" and the "original" being exactly the same. But the science, the "how-does-it-work," didn't matter to me. What mattered was that shot of Frank, sitting dejectedly in his work space, with the brilliant voiceover, and you feel how alone and miserable the dude is.
Visually, great, the editing "felt" right, and the performances from the actors were definitely in the top 5 of the fest for me.

I loved the lab scenes at night. The blues were fantasticly yummy.
You had some vignetting going on there, and I thought it really worked for the most part, especially the intro, but, it didn't work so well for me in the dialog scenes.

I like the off voice of the main character, the green eyes of the actress and the little golden cube as a special effect. Above all I loved your elements of coloured light: blue and green when he is alone and speaks with his own and daylight when there is his wife/girlfriend like a metapher for: blue/green light = the past/negativ/something dead, daylight = the future/positiv/the life. It reminds me to the Peter Greenaway film "The cook, the thief, his wife & her lover.
This was a very nice work. I appreciated it so much. A lot of compliments!

Hey everyone!
First of all, I have to admit that all of the comments are SUPER encouraging to me! After I finished the editing and was getting ready to send it off to Herman and Brad for music and sound design I felt like it had not turned out as well as I had wanted. I didn't know if the editing was too boring or too sporadic. I didn't know if people would get the story...and on and on! :)
But after hearing you guys are following the plot and relating to what the character is feeling that is super rewarding! I think it is much more a testament to the people who worked on the film (actors, crew, writer, DP, Brad, Herman, etc.) than it is to anything I did. The old adage about surrounding yourself with people who are better than you is very, very true in this industry!!!
:) Mark, can't believe we got a second comment and even a second viewing from you!!! We are honored. :)
Dopey, I appreciate your comparison to "The Prestige"...I think sometimes I overthink how much the audience will analyze a story during a first viewing. I guess if the story is interesting and the characters believable the little "technicalities" matter as much. Glad you liked the editing! *Daniel stops crying and starts to smile* :D
ABSteel and ZaZa, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
Yeehaanow, the vignetting...ah yes. Uhm...we used the Redrock M2 which we have used before but this time we added the Flip to it. And apparently we did not have it set up quite correctly. It became more noticeable when we CC the film.
Regarding the color correction I attempted to do it in Apple Color. Being the first time I have tried to use it for a project there was a huge learning curve and I think I pushed some of it way too far. But I am glad the various "looks/worlds" worked for at least some of the viewers! Sweet!
I love you guys!!! :love4:
Thanks for watching,

Cinematography!!!!!!! WOW!!! This looked very nice and the acting worked for the most part for me. The thing that threw me was the story. I did not understand how her sickness would be made better somewhere else. It sucked for him later and that confused me too. I am sure you explained it so I will read the above posts to find answers. Good effect at the end. Great accomplishment!

When I first saw the frame grabs for The Small Multiple, I remember thinking "this film looks like it's going to be exactly the kind of thing I like." And sure enough, I loved it. Aesthetically, it's beautiful -- the lab equipment, the dials, the lights, the tubes, the knobs, the superconductor prop -- great stuff, and all filmed beautifully.
Of course, I have quite a few storyline questions (most of which have already been asked by others). But somehow the plot in this film is almost secondary to the mood that you've created -- similar the the kind of feeling I'd get when watching Pi or Primer. That feeling of scientific discovery.
I love stories that are grounded in reality but have elements of fantasy. To me, the cool thing about the Small Multiple is that we get to a very intimate look at how a remarkable invention changes two people's lives. The result is solid sci-fi mixed with equally solid drama.
Definitely one of my favorites. Congratulations!

Loved this film. Great production design, great music, great writing, great story.
I liked the lead actor's look more when he was scruffy. I might have left him scruffy the whole movie, although I understand exactly why you didn't.
The only thing that bothered me at all was the vignetting that's already been discussed, but that's minor.
I'd love to drive up to Dallas to work on your next one, if you'll let me.

Matt, thanks for the comments! I really appreciate comments on the clarity of story/plot as that is something I wanted to work on with this film (if people don't understand what's going on it makes it hard to enjoy a film). :)
My thought regarding why her sickness would be better is that in this "parallel universe" everything might look the same but there are subtle differences. For example, the newspaper is still on his workbench but now the headline has changed (Back to the Future anyone?). In the same way she is still the same person...mostly. In this version of her the illness is no longer existent.
I think Don explained this more eloquently in his post about the "infinite possibilities" and how the Small Multiple works to distinguish small variances etc.
Zoidoid, first of all (as I said in your thread) I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED your film! The ending was perfectly revealed at the right time. Gorgeous! I thought it was funny when I saw screen grabs from your thread I thought the same thing! Actually, I thought, "Man, I hope our story is not an exact copy!" :D
I'm glad the dramatic element came through. Oftentimes I get caught up in thinking, "Hey, this will look cool!" and neglect the emotional aspects of the film. Hopefully we were able to have a little bit of both...
Jason, I would love to work with you anytime you want! As I've said before your natural writing ability is ridiculous!!! Either Waco or Dallas/Denton we should definitely get together!
Glad you noticed the scruffy/clean shaven continuity! Trying to figure out the shooting schedule to match continuity between alternate universes was a little bit tricky!
Just a quick note...I think the longer version of this might shed more light on some of the story details. The 6-minutes meant a lot of content/story had to be cut so hopefully we can get a longer version done and posted (in better quality) at some point.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback! You guys ROCK!!!

Wow guys, 10 stars.
I had a hard time commenting on things because I wasn't thinking about commenting, I was just watching the movie. (this is good)
Here are some things i remember:
I love vignettes.
Nice eye shot.
Love the subject matter, I'm a total nerd and love nerdy talk. it reminded me of PI.
2:06.....press return.
How the hell did you do that floating cube? if that's cg, you have the most realistic cg ive ever seen here.
Lighting is great.
That's all I got. Like I said I was so enthralled, I forgot to critique it, which is I guess a critique in it self.
Booya,
Thanks,

Hey Joe!
Thanks for watching and I'm glad the floating cube caught your attention. I wish it were CG! If I was that good I would have done a film called "O3" and kicked some A**! :D
I think someone referenced it earlier in the thread but it has something to do with the superconductivity of magnets when supercooled...to uh....certain....uhm....yeah, I didn't understand it either. All I know is I got to buy some liquid nitrogen (cool stuff!) and make a magnet levitate!
I read about it online and thought it would make a cool visual element to kind of sell the "exotic" quality of the time machine. Initially I was terrified that this is an experiment everyone conducts in 5th Grade and they would all immediately say, "Hey, that's a levitating magnet. LAME!" (I was homeschooled and sometimes I am not sure what I may have missed out on) :D
Here are some pictures of us shooting that scene:

Damn, sir! You've outdone yourself!
I loved God and Country so I knew that TSM was going to rule me in the face.
Dude, really great work here. That M2 is SHARP!! The floating cube was a fascinating little trick, and it's even more impressive that it was a real science experiment!
Loved it, man. 10 stars.

I couldn't remember if I told you that "God and Country" won the award for Best Narrative Short at the GI Film Festival in D.C. a few weeks ago! I would love to see more of your ideas for the poster design! The one you already did was very sylistic and would definitely grab the attention of anyone walking by it!
I'm jealous you got to work on "O2"! :)

Wonderful film. I had just a litle problem with the facial expressions of the lead actor in one scene. You editing was superb as was the cinematography. I really liked your use of all that rack-mounted lab/hamradio/computer stuff added to cool lighting of the lab set.
For me the floating of the Yttrium Oxide cube superconductivity demo worked and added to the lab scene.
The tragedy of his final outcome was very poignant. Did she have a lung problem due to the falling of the world trade center? Was the fact that it didn't fall in the new reality attributing to her now leading a disease free life in happiness with the other version of himself? I was a little lost as to her physical problem and its solution.
Overall, one of my favorite films of the fest! Nice job.

Was the fact that it didn't fall in the new reality attributing to her now leading a disease free life in happiness with the other version of himself? I was a little lost as to her physical problem and its solution.
That's an interesting idea that I hadn't thought of. I always took it as she is still the same, but in the alternate universe that she goes to they have a cure for her disease.
I really like the script for this one. Reminds me of the old teleportation conundrum -- say you built a teleportation device that would create an exact copy of a person in another location, then a matter of microseconds later destroy the original. If you're the new, teleported copy, you think the device worked flawlessly, but if you're the original, would you want to be unmade? Sort of how his alternate-universe-self will be forever unaware of the suffering he must endure in an alternate reality.
Maybe I'm alone here, but I thought the acting was the weakest link, particularly the "let me work" scene. The pacing seemed a bit rushed in that scene, too. The "warm" scenes were too vibrant in my opinion, to the extent that it looked unnatural and distracted from what was happening.
Voice-over scenes with him working and all the footage of the time machine were top-notch. That floating magnet is an awesome touch, and no, we didn't get to see that cool trick in public school :P. Time travel effects were very well done. In general the lighting/cinematography and sound were great. Story was well told, such that the twist was immediately understandable. Nicely done.

Man, all you guys are way too intelligent for me! :) All the possibilities and explanations are mind boggling...but I think that is one of the reasons I chose the script. I liked the questions it presented and the way it makes you think/analyze after the fact.
In my opinion the science/theory of the story really acts as more of a support and catalyst for the drama/meaning of the story. But it is an intriguing concept and I think that helps make the story that much more interesting.
I agree with you Duff, the script was very solid! I guess it really is true that you have to start with a good script/story for everything else to work.
I appreciate your comments on acting/pacing as well as the color correction.
The "let me work" scene probably feels rushed because I cut out 80% of the dialogue for that scene in order to make the 6-minute mark. :cheesy: I think if there had been enough time to let the scene play in its entirety it would probably feel a little more natural as the dialogue and interaction there have a nice progressive build. In fact, I feel like the better pieces of dialogue and interaction between Frank and Cathy were left on the cutting room floor in an effort to make the 6-minutes. Hopefully some of that can be resurrected in a longer edit as Don had some really great lines in there!
I would love to see "Directors Cuts" of the other films in this competition that had to cut stuff out to meet the time requirement...I think it would be fascinating to compare both versions!
I agree with you on the color correction as well! I think that was my least favorite aspect of the film and something I want to improve!
Thanks for the feedback guys. Very helpful!!!

You are more than welcome to threadjack Chris! Seriously, if there is anyone who has not been to the MoviePoet.com site GO NOW!!!
If it were not for this resource I probably would have written some crappy, hack of a story. But with this site you have access to hundreds of great scripts that just happen to be the PERFECT LENGTH for the DVXUser contests! Every writer I have contacted about turning their script into a film has been more than gracious.
And working with Don on revising the script to meet our needs was a very smooth experience. So, thank you Chris for providing this resource and promoting it to the DVXUser community!

I am more than happy to applaud all the people who crafted your story (you, Don, moviepoet).
I also wanted to let you know how much I appreciated your direction on the short. I watch the DVX fest by having a DVD-hometheatre-mini-festival to show the shorts to a group of (non)filmmaking friends. And the group just loved how you told the story.
So, great job on telling this story through your choice of shots, edits, pacing, score, etc.

Wow! I really enjoyed this! The story confused me. I got that it was multiverse (and I get that), but exactly why he wanted to go to the otherone was interesting. If he was going to copy himself over, why not copy her over too? After the newspaper showing the twin towers still standing I got my mind in gear for a 'un-doing Sep 11' story then never got out of that, perhaps that was my problem.
The cinematography was awesome!!! Great stuff here, from the opening to the closing shot, very strong.
I thought your actors did well, but there were too many lines of dialogue. I think if you cut down your syllables in half your actors could have done even better.
Good job dude, a very solid piece.

artofsuntzu, thanks for the comments. :cheesy: It is encouraging to hear that the "average person" (i.e. non-filmmaker) was able to grasp the story and appreciate the way it was told! I love to hear how an average viewer responds as I think they often look for and appreciate things differently than fellow filmmakers might. Also, love the idea of the DVD-hometheatre-mini-festival!!! I'm gonna have to try that next fest!
Shawn, sorry the "twin towers" thing threw you off! We actually referenced that again and showed an alternate headline in the full length version but of course that got cut to make the 6-minutes! :D When you say "too many lines of dialogue" did you mean there was too much dialogue in the film as a whole or that it felt too rushed/crammed in the way it was written, delivered or edited?
Thanks again guys!

Great stuff Daniel! Really liked this one. I thought the acting was top notch and I liked the twist at the end. Didn't see that one coming. The only drawback for me was too much voice over. I would have liked to have seen some of the information communicated differently, but hey that's just me. Again, great job, one of my top 5 favorites.

JP,
Glad you liked it dude! It is a lot of voiceover for such a short piece...although I think it might have been difficult to communicate such a complex concept without it. When I edited this short version I ended up cutting out a lot more dialogue than I did VO because it seemed to tell the story better. Also, when my girlfriend watched it without all of the VO in place she was super confused! :D
Thanks a lot for the feedback!

happygobo (9:44:29 PM): nice twist at the end
spesliker (9:44:36 PM): the science has some scratch head moments.
happygobo (9:44:47 PM): yeah it's a little dense
spesliker (9:45:00 PM): unless we are talking about simultaneously alternate realities here.
TheBrad84 (9:45:18 PM): the story for me definitely gets lost in the science sometimes. thats why i mentioned pi. the science takes over teh story at times
spesliker (9:45:35 PM): good call.
happygobo (9:45:42 PM): I don't see how you're gonna catch algorithms off of an expression.
spesliker (9:46:06 PM): it makes my head hurt just thinking about it.
spesliker (9:46:30 PM): marie passed out from the science.
TheBrad84 (9:46:35 PM): i just think it goes too far into explaining the science. its a movie, we'll buy it if its half believable. stop trying so hard to convince us
happygobo (9:46:46 PM): she was blinded with science
spesliker (9:46:51 PM): that's a good argument.
happygobo (9:46:51 PM): SCIENCE

happygobo (9:47:57 PM): got it
TheBrad84 (9:47:59 PM): otherwise i liked the look of the film and it was an enjoyable watch. will have to rewatch later
We really liked this film, but I think Brad said it perfectly, we felt like you tried too hard to convince us of the science, but since it's a VO, really easy to fix that if you wanted to. You had some issues with smear and edge blur sometimes from the 35mm adapter, but nothing too bad. Great job with this film, nice balance between quality story and quality technical filmmaking.

Loved the "Manning face" comment! I've noticed that is a trait he does every time he acts (I've worked with him on other pieces)! Funny you guys picked up on it. :)
In fact someone that I showed the film to noticed the same thing and said it made him "seem too young" to them and kind of took them out of the moment...interesting. It is funny what people notice! :D

Hey man,
Just caught the flick. Whoa, just whoa. Forgive me for not combing your thread to see where stuff has been mentioned. Sorry for re-addressing something that's been mentioned.
First and foremost, this is a really spectacular short. I love it. LOVE IT. Strong acting, cinematography, set-design (holy crap, man, that set is fantastic. LOVE IT.) This movie looked beautiful, sounded beautiful, acted beautifully. And it's dense in all of those ways I can't express it enough. I think next time I watch one of your movie's I'm gonna wear a helmut so my brains don't get exploded out of my head.
Secondly, I think the science worked (in that it doesn't pull me out of it). I think it's weird and might have missed something when he talks about building a machine that can see/calculate/whatever the small multiple and show the various alternate universes but can't actually do the traveling? Then he builds the machine that will let him travel there? Interesting. I guess it keeps from using up all of your resources (whatever that may be). That just stuck out as being weird.
And you know, the VO worked for me. Sure, I think if you had him recording himself/some practical/grounded in the film reason for him to be doing it it would have worked better for me but overall, I thought he acted it beautifully and so, I'm okay with it.
Yeah, those are actually my only bones to pick (actually, I don't dig your opening titles or the fast cut out. I would have preferred a fade or something slower. But those are just personal tastes and things that you can fix should you so desire). But man, I loved this piece. Fantastic work. Hope to see much much more for you. One of the best in the fest for my money. Wonderful work.

I really, really like the idea of his VO being a part of some recording or something!!! A great idea! I'll have to contemplate that...could add a really cool element!

This is the movie I've been waiting for. Throughout all of Timefest I've been waiting for a really solid time travel flick... and here I get a really fantastic one! Totally surprised me, but a completely welcome one.
I think you really nailed the human element in this story... the acting was really great for the most part [wasn't a fan of his first confrontation with Catherine... but his final scream... chills!] and it definitely helped to ground this character in reality. I personally really liked the voice over -- I think if done right it can serve to bolster the film and that was certainly the case here ["...the death of a rainforest..." line coupled with the image is great... ] One minor gripe... I think I heard the term "Small Multiple" too many times. It might only be three [from my count] but that's a lot for a 6 min short. But like I said, minor gripe!
While admittedly, I don't think I understood every tiny little bit of the film, I still felt really satisified. I liken this to Primer -- another film I felt was very heady and though it got a bit convulted by it's end, it was still fantastic work.
Excellent cinematography, fantastic set design [that lab is awesome], cool music and sound design, nice vfx work and great editing. This quickly jumped into my top 3 films.
Thanks for your effort with this. I'm sooo glad I got my time travel fix!

Thanks for taking the time to offer useful comments! I'm kind of curious Justin and Krestofre (sorry, don't know your real name) what aspects of the story were difficult to grasp? I would like to know what your take was on the story based on what elements you did understand... :)
Sorry for taking a while to reply. I wanted to watch the film again before I addressed your question and finally had time to sit down and review it. After a second viewing I would not say that there were any aspects that were difficult to grasp, and on the second viewing I picked up all the clues to answer any questions that I had upon my first viewing. It's a dense film that demands an audience that has a great attention to detail, or it demands repeat viewing, and there's nothing wrong with either of those things.
***Spoilers***
Where my initial confusion came from was I kept expecting a shift in time to take place, not a shift in dimension. So when you cut back to the main character and he's alone, I didn't get it at first, but it was my fault. You explain all the necessary elements in your film and upon the second viewing I had to go and rate this film higher.

An excellent film. Good story, great cinematography, set design, score, sound and editing. There was just one point where the acting of the main character (around 02:44:20) took me out of it a little, but it's a very minor point. Altogether a great film. Thanks,
Jason

H - O - L - Y C - R - A - P ! ! ! ! ! This was amazing. Hard to believe it was Indie made.
So, this, along with a few other films I've watched, received a score of "10" from me. That said, however, this is my favorite. I really like the others as well, but this was just perfect on every level, I felt.
Story, writing (LOVED the dialogue, expertly read as well), the acting (best in the fest, in my opinion, by BOTH leads), camera, lighting, sound, music, ART DIRECTION (WOW!), and the list goes on...
I don't gush over someone's film too often, but again ... wow.
I'm SO glad this made the top 8, otherwise I may never have watched it, as there were SO many, and I had a hard time getting through them all.
Again, congratulations ... it was simply wonderful.
Oh, one last side thought ... I was curious to know how he knew his wife would be okay, or was with him in another dimension ... but not enough for it to matter to me ... it was THAT good. :)
Thanks again for makign this awesome little film!

How did I miss this film, or the discussion thread? I'd watched maybe 75% of the films in the fest, and hadn't heard about the Small Multiple until I saw the top 8 (I'd seen the other finalists). If it was being enthusiastically talked about, I missed it. Nothing against 02, which has so much going for it, but this film, The Small Multiple, is so exceptional and it seems 02 get a ton more attention. I'm very, very impressed...as I guess you all were too since it did get into the top 8. I guess I wasn't paying attention.

Hey Sean,
Thanks for the kind comments! This is the first DVXFest we have entered so I don't expect to get near the attention that the Fat Monster crew does...and the attention they have gotten is certainly well deserved!
When you look at their thread you get to see pictures of awesome spaceship sets, a hot chick and all kinds of cool stuff! You look at mine and all you get to see is a ratty old room! :D
Anyway, thanks for checking out the film! I appreciate your comments and I know that we are all very excited to be included in the Top 8 along with such great competition!

Hey Shawn,
Thanks man! Unfortunately it is looking like I will not make it on the 11th... :( But we are planning on having a "viewing party" here and watching the streaming webcast!
So, you guys that do get to attend in person better live it up (make it more exciting for the rest of us to watch)! :D

Wow the competition is stiff in this contest. This was a really good movie. I thought it looked and sounded really good. The set with the machines looked good and the time/dimension travel was handled really well.
Very good script and I liked the twist at the end. Really good job on this film.

Hey Conlanforever,
Thanks for the feedback/complements!
Didn't your Scriptfest Entry win the last contest ("God's Warehouse")? I think I read part of your entry but never got around to finishing it...a good story from what I remember!

My favorite film of the fest. I am a true sci-fi junkie when it comes to stories that revolve around complex ideas of the universe we live in. I remember reading this script when Chris advertised it and I was wondering who the hell was going to try and tackle it AND make it work. And even though I had read the script and knew the story, you still had be engaged. One of the few films in the fest where the VO worked for the film. Terrific acting, looked good, sound design was great. VFX were perfectly controlled and not over-the-top, where you could have easily gone, which really gave it a sense of something real and not fantasy.
Awesome. Brilliant. Kudos to the filmmakers behind this gem.

Wow John!
Thanks for the glowing review! I never really watched much sci-fi growing up so I wasn't sure if I would be able to pull it off. :) But I am glad it worked for you and that you enjoyed in spite of the fact that you had already read the script!
Thanks man,
Daniel

And that probably gave you an advantage, I think. You made the film feel very much like a drama and not a balls-to-the-wall sci-fi flick. It worked out quite nicely.

Maybe when I'm visiting my folks in Aubrey we can hook up for beers at the very least.

Hey Daniel,
I thought that was a great film... I might be a bit late on arrival to say it, because I had totally forgotten about Time Fest until now, but I kept on thinking about Primer and the style that this short evoked, which was good... did anyone else notice the similarities? Were you in any part inspired by the film?
pia12254
08-01-2008, 02:02 PM
Thanks for the feedback! The story was not my creation but as for visual style, pacing and feel I would say there is a definite "Primer" influence. I love that movie and the fact that it was made in the area (North Texas) makes me even more appreciative of what they accomplished with that!
Honestly, I am not a huge fan of traditional sci-fi (whatever that means) but I really liked Primer...the simplicity of the production that allowed your focus to settle on the story and the idea behind it.
Anyway, hope that answers your question. Thanks for checking it out!
Daniel
