What kind of boom mic do you guys recommend for some great sound quality on set but not super expensive. Also would you recommend hooking it up straight to the hvx or should I have a external sound recorder for the boom mic. What kind of sound system do they usually use on a movie set. What do independent film makers do?

thanks a lot

what do you consider "super expensive"?

Don't bother with a DAT since its gonna be a pain to sync everything up in post.

Get yourself a 3 or 4 channel mixer and output from that to the HVX.

Make sure you get a halfway decent sound person, since an audience will forgive crappy images, but not crappy sound.

Sorry I'm a bit confused what do you mean 3 or 4 channel mixer(this is a separate device? What kind?) and then plug it into the hvx though the xlr inputs.

it all depends on what youre shooting. in some cases its wiser to record to a separate device. other times not.

in some situations you may well need more than 1 mic - thats what the 4 channel mixer is for. you can connect that output either wired or wirelessly via the hvx xlr inputs.

I bought a used Shure FP33 mixer from a DVXuser and I'm really happy with it.

Has three channel XLR input, and then two XLR's that can go into the camera.

You can pick up a mixer thats cheaper as well, but the FP33 has given me the best results in the price range.

also the Sennheiser 416 is pretty much the standard boom mic I've used.

I haven't actually used the XLR's on my HVX yet, is there a point to outputting to both xlr's through a mixer? (Is one left and the other right) or is that just incase you want to hook up 2 seperate mics?

Even if you are getting a mono source, It's good to double it on the HVX and then you can have one set a bit hotter than the other one so you have headroom and can have a a safety channel. Really cool feature.

I think a 416 or equal is the way to go. DO not use a cheap mike as stated, that will kill your piece. Sounds like you do need to hire someone too.

So is one input for left and the other for right?
