First and foremost I have no professional training in any equipment, and I'm trying to learn on my own. I'm a newb, I already know.

But I do own an HVX200, and me and a couple of guys are trying to make shitty movies.

Anyway, i was talking with someone who owns another professional camera and he was telling me a use for the buttons on the side of the camera that you can assign functions to that I'm kinda speculative of.

He said you could assign a focus point to one of the buttons so that when you hit the button the camera will automatically focus to the distance or the plane you have chosen. So that if you were focused on an object in the foreground, you could just hit that button and it would focus on its own to something you have chosen prior.

If this is true can someone tell me how to do it? If it isn't true is there something that does this? If there isn't can someone make one? please?

The HVX doesn't have that ability, but some Sony cameras do.

Is there something you can buy or any recommendations on how to do this as fast or as effective as possible.

because when I try, I always seem to pass the subject then have to backtrack and its completely unprofessional/ugly

you can get an external follow focus and either drop on hard stops or just mark the stops on the marker edge.

here is a good affordable one:
