Well I got back yesterday from a stint guest lecturing at my old film school. In my previous live I was a union focus puller.
First off there was three times as many students as when I was there, and I thought man this is a lot of folks to come into our labour force. My old professor was telling me they get 10 times the applicants they used to, and you now need a A average to get in (good thing I got in when I did).
Anyway what struck me was the complexity of what the students were pulling off compared to what we accomplished. Is it because they are all brianiacs, or is it the info on the net and DVDs, or sadly is it just that we were slackers. It is bugging me, and thrilling me. Just think of the talent that has access to tools that are so much cheaper then ever before. I can not wait to see movies in the future.

I know from minor experience that the tools available to young film makers like me, are amazing compared to even the ones available 5 years ago. I mean, for under 5000 dollars, you can get the DVX, and software like Premiere pro, that will run (although not very good) on pretty much and computer you have access to. Add some cheapo home depot halogens, some gaffers tape and some creativity, and you can do just about anything. All with a film look too. Then you can go to dvxuser.com, post your edited footage in the screen grabs forum, and get instant feedback from industry pro's and creative minds like yourself. I know I am only 18, but I have a feeling that you weren't a slacker. The way I see it, is that thanks to new technology, film making has blossomed, and become introduced to a wider spread of people. Those people now have the tools to produce professional content at a fraction of the price the technology was even a few years ago.
Don't sugar coat it for him PDX, he was a slacker, plain and simple.
Your lucky you were even able to get into the unions.
I kid, I kid. ;)

I could probably buy alot of those kite things with the money from selling my DVX and accessories, I mean, think about it...10,000 paper kites? or 1 DVX? BTW, those elementary school children in the picture are eagerly running to their script writing and advanced non-linear editing class....
Hell yeah, let's do it.
We could get a few thousand more if I sell my Arri lights too.

Right now, I am drinking coffee and listening to this dude run on the treadmill (I work in a gym). He's been running on that thing for like an hour! You could keep time with the flippin rythm of his feet! Oh well, I guess its better than cleaning the janitors closet or washing towels (both of which I had to do earlier)

When I first saw the group that was exactly what I was thinking. Slacker I tried to be, but film school was the first time I was doing something that drove me. I even dumped a girl because she was taking up too much of my time (sad but true). Now if only I had a kite, I could go out and fly it on the frozen tundra instead of finishing the script I promised my client by nine AM.
