Hi there,
I have a dumb question. When recording on mini dv tape, you can change the shutter speed. I notice that 1/30 vs. 1/15, 1/15 is better in lighting but when you pan the camera, there is a certain jitterness to the picture.

I am shooting basic talking heads on friday during presentations at conference and i know from last year (when i had dvx) ligthing was low. I can't use lights to lit up rooms and my xh a1 doesn't come until few weeks.

Is it a good idea to shoot on 1/15 if not panning much and still able to get sound via xlr or lav mic

Help or other solution would be great

never shoot in 1/15 unless you want extreme motion blur.

Indeed, shoot at least your frame rate.

any other tips as how can i notch up light on the camera. i know hvx is not the best in sd format but i have no other solution or back up at this point

just gathering some tips

as for motion blur, would you still get it if the camera is still?

at 1/15 youre going to get blur on pretty much ANY movement. even if the person talking turns their head.

this is kind of a fundamental question - but it appears worth asking...have you cranked the gain up? it will introduce grain, but its going to improve low light performance.

yea the gain is the last resort because of the graininess. I guess I will hope there are windows in the room I am filming and/or good light. If not, I would have to raise the gain which I didn't want to. Thanks everyone.

what do you mean - when is the best scenario to shoot at 1/15?

anytime you want really stylized motion blur. simulating an acid trip or a hectic situation

as a side note. i've never really seen a HUGE problem with the light performance of the hvx. are there easier cameras to use in low light? sure. but for me, a little gain-grain and or a bit darker footage is WELL WORTH the increased resolution going from SD to HD.

here is a clip i shot the first few days i had my HVX. totally stock settings. i just plugged in a card an started shooting.

- i find that a web browser darkens it a bit. download it to your machine for a better example
