You can do it in the camera, to backup to DV. Follow the directions in the menu... or of course you can grain and gain it up and do it all in post.
transferring to tape has nothing to do with grain.

After reading this I may be in luck but I just wanted to check with everyone first before I went out and attempted. Im much more of a producer than a DP, or used to be before hundreds of hours have been logged on the HVX, with 4/8 gig cards during intense settings. I have never shot tape in the camera nor did I ever intend to but I have been booked for a job shooting for someone else and the client needs tape for their edit. The place they use still has them on a meridian system and forces an upgrade in if I deliver in HD to an adrenalin system. But if I shoot onto p2 at the highest settings either in 1080i or at 720pn can I lay it off directly onto SD tape, panasonic of course, to give them for the edit and keep the HD for archive and reel puroposes? Which is the best way, format, to shoot it if intercutting with television footage like CSPAN?
What is the exact process for backup to DV that you mentioned? Does it affect the quality at all doing it this way or is basically the same as shooting it in tape? Can I run both at the same time making a tape SD backup of everything I shoot in HD? Can I really just use the camera with p2 card and info on it or do I have to use a deck and computer and p2 store(device for mounting). Thanks ahead for walking me through this process. Whenever Im one of the shooters on one of my jobs its always p2 but going back to tape is a scary thing.
Oh ya, and my job is tomorrow so all prompt replies get gold stars and first dibs on whatever.

You can deliver SD on MiniDV tape. Shoot with P2 and then do the transfer as covered in the HVX200 user manual (ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/Drivers/PBTS/manuals/OM_AG-HVX200.pdf).
In my experience, it looks as good as if you shot it directly to MiniDV. You can't use both at the same time, you'll need to do it afterward.

Mind you that tape won't reference the original files at all. Not with timecode or anything. So that tape will be their master...they cannot go back and "online" to the HD master footage unless they eye match it shot for shot.

This is good info for the new p2 guys and this should be bookmarked.

everything is as it should be, thanks everyone, profu et all, any idea on which setting would be best to mix with tape, 720/24pn is my standard choice but since there will be some news footage there perhaps 720/60p would be a better choice for matching up. either way, im shooting HD tomorrow, and should plan on regular dubbing speed for laying off tapes right? Is there anyway to dub off of the p2 store directly or to transfer clips back onto a card?
thanks again everyone.

What do you need to use that for? Be specific?
Your youtube channel is sweet, it was inspirational.
