Greetings.
So, I get a call from what shall remain an unnamed store in Brooklyn, which I'm sure we're all familiar with but would never actually purchase from-not from their toll free number much less their online store.
A few years ago when I wasn't so savvy I bought a Sony digital camera from them for an unbelievable price. BUT everything went great- fast shipping, no hassles, great deal. No problems.
In the intervening years since, I've been reading this forum and now I know better. So, when 'Larry' called from Brooklyn and said I qualify for a free DVX100B I was skeptical for sure, since Larry didn't say I won the DVX, he just said I 'qualify.'
But I thought, What if...? Then I thought How the F@#& does Larry know I would be interested in a DVX? Wait a minute! How the F@#& does Larry know I use a DVX!?
I thought about this for a minute longer then realized that maybe Larry went through the data base at the unnamed Brooklyn store and saw that I ordered a Sony digital camera a few years ago. That's how he got my number.
But how did he know I use or even might want a DVX? Is there someway that this guy could have phished around in DVXuser and got my number? (Is the DVXuser database secure?) Or did he just see my name here and phish through his database looking for matches and calling on these?
I really can't imagine Larry would have the time to compare these databases, or if it would even be worth his time. Could something like this be automated? Could his PC just spit out a list for him to call? Still, he has to make the call because I spoke to a real Larry. Maybe his name wasn't Larry, but he was a real guy.
I don't mean to sound paranoid, but it makes me wonder just how this guy came up with my number and my propensity toward DVXs. Even if he saw my name and place here at DVXuser and looked me up in the phone book, it's still a bit curious.
Is it possible that these Brooklyn stores could be phishing around and gathering this kind of information? Has this happened to anyone else? I would bet my wife that no one's gotten a free DVX, otherwise we would have heard about it here!
I told Larry that this sounded too good to be true. He said What! You don't want a free DVX? I told him I already had one. To which he replied Then maybe I can interest you in some new batteries or filters or something?
There's no such thing as a free DVX. So if Larry calls you, no matter what he tells you he's lying. But he can get you a good deal on a camera bag-tripod combo kit.
