YES I will! Open invitation... and it doesn't even have to be your birthday. Like Matt and I mentioned to you on Sleeper, next time you come down this way, give us a buzz and we will go grab chow and shoot the breeze.

We are going to shoot NETHERBORN in a couple of weeks, you are welcome to come participate or just watch.

i am about to buy a one way ticket up i-5 (i-99) to get in on this...

booming film scene.

not to mention i am very excited about this film. not a whole lot of comedies in the dvxuser fests. maybe comedies but not a lot that would be comparable to what i am expecting from that poster.

im drooling already.

Troy Ruff
04-03-2008, 05:45 PM
I agree, the last fest had no comedies. So this fest needs one. This will be a funny film. Thanks for the support.

http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/30869/1207201844.jpg

Yeah, I think that I may film the last two weeks in April or the last week in April, the first week in May. I will need at least a month for VFX, but I also need to put together a couple of different cable rigs and sinice we are designing them from scratch, I will need a little time. Point being, the very latest I think that I should film is the last week in April and first in May. That will give me enough time to get the rigs engineered and enough time afterwards to get post done.

For those looking at this thread, we shot for 8-10 hours in 102 degree (in the shade) heat... It was more like 124 degrees in the direct sun. :Drogar-KnockedOut(D Our actors and crew were constantly drinking water and re-applying sun screen to keep from heat stroke. I lost 7 pounds in two days running stabilized camera and doing grip work. It was still fun though! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) The crew was so positive, as is usual for Hyperactive Studios linked projects.

I am still brainstorming the Hypercrane. I have inspected what is out there online and went through 'sticker shock' when I saw what they were selling for!

Some of the larger jibs are sweet. Left hand on the verizoom and focus and right hand on a joystick that controls X and Y movement of the camera. Handles to control the up and down, left and right of the whole rig. Nice. $20,000 on up... not nice. I want to do the same thing for cheapo.

My dream rig has the ability to raise and lower the crane with an 'up-down' footpedal, left hand on the Verizoom and focus and right hand on a joystick for camera aiming. A grip would move the back of the operator to swing the rig. Monitor will be directly in front of the operator.

I have all of the electronics made for the control of the AC stepper motors for the camera functions and have the motor for the raising and lowering of the rig. I need to put the dual camera functions into a single joystick. Right now I have the switches for the up/down, with varibiable speed control, and then a separate switch for the left/right with variable speed control. I have a separate switch for the rig up/down that I want to put into a foot switch... maybe a wah-wah pedal potentiometer. I am looking for a large single screw set up that used to go with the old 8' satellite dishes to use for the smooth electronic up/down of the whole rig. I want the operator to be on a light stool (drum throne?) attached to the base that can rotate with the rig so the operator can stay on the back lateral side of the rig toward the action at all times. The Hypercrane I have made blueprints for will have an ability to raise camera 20.5'. I want the camera on the end to lower and raise to vertical. I want left/right pan to be able to pan 180 degrees. That one is tough as I am not going to hang the camera on the front but am opting to have the camera on the direct front end of the crane for an advantage mechanically.

Shane, alternatives are to use all hand controls except for the verizoom and focus. I have an alternative design for that too. This thing is moderately complex and will take a while to build. Be ready to buy me a double double!

I say skip all the controls and build one with a seat and a ball head so that one of us can sit on the end and control the camera.

I think it should be designed to be operated by two to three people. The movement of the crane should be one person. The focus and camera movement should be one or two people depending on the complexity. One person doing it all makes for sloppy shots.

Are you serious? I guess that would work. If Dad could build one where it had a platform where someone actually sat at the end by the camera and did all the controls...it would be interesting. hmmm.... I like the idea of have the zoom and focus controlled by one person or two and the movement of the crane and camera as another person's job. I basically like whatever it becomes because right now we have nothing. :costumed-smiley-047

Well I was going to download all the shorts and burn them to DVD, but since you're back, do you want to tag team. You download the last half, and I'll download the first half? We could put it on external Hard Drives and then swap drives!

This movie flat out pwns. I laughed a lot and really forgot I was supposed to be looking for things to critique. Just a fun, fun ride.

Thinking back, the only think I wanted was more of the other characters. Like we never really got an intro of the kid.

But that just means I wanted more.

I was very impressed at the detail of all of the little gags you threw in there.

Just great.

You have a lot of character and charisma in this piece. I really enjoyed. Me and my neighbour were definitely laughing. Some was a little too over the top for me but the audio helped it a LOT. I loved the random echoing of that guys voice.

I thought the acting was quite good for the most part, definitely quirky and fun.

Very nice work!

well perfect time for constructive criticism: I'm about to roll the film (again)

**TOTAL SPOILER ALERT**
Love the credits. really add to the feel. good introuductions to the characters as well. I'm enjoying your shots here.

Can't quite see that Nico is feeding tablets to the birds. his movements were a little too understated for that.

The singles on the girls would have played better if they were in a tighter shot for the water-pouring. its okay to be super ridiculous with those types of shots since they're hyper realistic.

A closer shot on Leon would have been cool as well.

Some close-ups on the exchanges between the chacracters would have been cool. You have the PERFECT close up on Nico, after the exchange, but i would have liked to have seen at least 3 closeups on the characters... a little more cinematography at play.

The finger shooting was a little too over the top for me. I spent the rest of the time wondering how he's going to go through the film without a finger tip. that's just me though.

More closeups on the start of the race would help to set some tension and character that woudl pay off nicely in the following bits.

Woudl have been nice to see a handful of marbles before he throws them. adds to the visuals and the following comedy. I like the shot of Leon falling, but thought that one should at least have still been moving forward... with it static it kind of takes it out of the race a little bit.

A medium shot after the wide on the bleachers when Ghost goes into the bleachers woudl have been priceless.

love the shot where she bits his arm nice edits there all around.

nice ending.
** END SPOILER**

It was good and funny and mostly well paced. Some shots were held a little too long (especially in the bleachers) but over all, it delivered on the funny.

LOL! You just described almost all of the shots that didn't make it in due to time. They were almost all shot, and will probably be in the longer version to be made later for the DVD. Troy was very complete on the shot list for the crew. There is even a music video we may make...

We really had loads of fun making this, we would have laughed until we cried, but it was 103 degrees out there and we were frying like slabs of steak on a BBQ. I teased Troy that my Hypercam became the "Hypersweat".

This had some great potential and some missed opportunities. I thought the shooting of the bystander was funny and would have loved to have seen more of that type of madness in this piece. I would have also liked to have seen more done with the "crowd", perhaps a multitude of changing "posters". It would have pushed it more toward Hot Shots or Airplane!

On the technical side, the opening with the car interior was a bit tough because of the blown out exterior. This is extremely common with interior/exterior shot and trying to get the correct exposure for either.

Good job for a first entry. Take advantage of the local talent pool to learn and improve.

Troy:

As a writer that really tries hard when it comes to writing comedy, I enjoyed watching this film. There were so many little quirks and jokes that it was almost too much to take in. I thought the actors were terrific.

I started laughing right away when Floyd let out a "wooo!" when he got out of the car.

As a general observation, when the title cards come on over the freeze-frame of the characters, I think I would have preferred a black-and-white freeze-frame instead of the color treatment that you used, or a simple freeze frame. Also, I think that the type could be timed a little better. It came on a little fast (I'm looking for the feeling that someone is actually typing it on the screen) and it disappeared before I had a chance to soak it in.

Scriptwise, I like the way the characters arrive at the race, sometimes interacting with each other. I also liked that the kid wasn't introduced until the end.

Loved the sequence that introduced Leon Combfield (GREAT character name, by the way, let me know if I can borrow it). Could have had even more water splashing around on the entourage, but the music that goes with that sequence is priceless. All around, great comedic writing. Maybe we could collaborate on a project sometime.

Dynamite cartoony sound design. It made the movie! The sound when Maya River gives Nico the finger, the film camera winder over Leon's intro, Little Man Jay's eye-poke noise at the starting line, "echo!", "rawr!", Floyd's finger walking to the girl on the bench, the bird poo splat, him hitting the pole, and many more. Loved them all! All perfectly used. Have you got a SFX collection of these cartoon sounds, and if so what is it, so I can order it immediately.

I didn't like the shooting of the finger. Perhaps more the compositing of the shot on his finger rather than the act itself. I think it would have been better with just the sound.

I think that the biggest weakness is the shot composition, and that you needed a few more close-ups to use in editing. One thing that I noticed is that when Floyd starts the race and heads to the stands to check out the girl, it's not really that clear he's doing that because there's a lot of stuff going on in that shot as all the characters start the race, and he kind of gets blocked out by Nico.

Great fans in the stands. Reminded me a little of the signs the fans were holding in Dodgeball.

I would LOVE to see more films like this. One of the few I watched repeatedly. I'm laughing more every time.

I can see a tremendous amount of effort went into this movie. Can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Who was that awesome actor that got shot and rolled down the hill. MAN I need to get a hold of that guy. I think he has a lot of potential! JK Anyways, I agree with a lot of the comments on this film. I think that a little less action would have pointed your eye to what the character was doing in the stadium, however knowing what we had to work with (mainly running out of time to finish) I think it came out great!

Haha, Shane, that was a great fall. Actually though, the finger shooting was one of the few things I didn't like about this short. Despite how over the top the short was, that moment just seemed like one step too far.

I loved all the interesting characters that were created. They all had great looks, personalities, and costumes. I like how their Handicaps and Phobias play a role in the story, but I wish everybody's did. For example, Maya's car phobia/handicap doesn't affect the story at all.

Love the look of the titles. They could have stayed up a tad longer, but I'm sure the time constraint discouraged you from that.

My favorite shots are probably the ones of everybody in line stretching/etc. for the race.

So often comedy shorts don't feel polished, but this one definitely did. Nice work.

Thanks for commenting on everything, I really appreciate it. We had a ton of fun making this film, and I agree about needing more close ups, I will be putting them in for the final DVD. Also anytime you want to exchange idea on a story let me know, I love comedy. Thanks again for your time to help me become a better film maker. :)

I guess I thought it would be cooler if their phobias/handicaps were all crucial during the race itself. I think that's what I was getting at. Like the way the bird poop does.
