Operating System Animation

I would like to animate a computer operating system.
Has anyone done this in After Effects before?

No one has any tips they can give me on animating an operating system?

what do you need to animate? on the screen?

A standard looking desktop, maybe a linux like konsole, icons, some sort of chat program, maybe a mouse pointer moving around etc.

it's pretty easy, even for an AE newb like myself. I was just hoping for some tips on making it look realistic, but not a windows clone.

I would first make the interface in photoshop using screenshots of different systems/ operating systems, and then i would have the mouse cursor and different windows as different layers to make it easier to animates in AE
